On 10JUN2023, the Oldies Rod & Custom Car Show was held in Historic Oldtown Pocatello, Idaho, to benefit the Senior Activity Center‘s (SAC) food delivery service: “It’s the people that we serve are underserved in our community. And so, it really helps with the nutrition for them so that they can hopefully stay in their homes longer and with activities and everything else. That’s part of our goal to.”-Pam Landon, Secretary for SAC
The automobile show was free to the public, proceeds from food vender sales, and raffle ticket sales, went to help SAC. Just to let you know how much the help is needed, in 2022 the Pocatello SAC served more than 22-thousand meals to local old people.
Here is a sampling of the vehicles that were there (click on each image to make them bigger):
Walk around video of the show, which was supported by many local business sponsors, most of the video has no audio as they were blaring copyrighted music at the event:

Apparently, the first Oldies Rod & Custom Car Show to benefit Pocatello SAC was on 10JUN2018.

During the month of June, 2022, the Idaho Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion-148th Field Artillery Regiment-116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team (aka Snake River Brigade) pounded the countryside of Morocco, on the African continent. Apparently it is part of having good international relations, and somehow reduces deployments: “One goal of the National Defense Strategy is to have good international relations and partnerships. Building multinational relationships, increasing their tactical proficiency and understanding how to work together reduces deployment requirements for our military and our international partners, and helps provide global security.”-Major Ryan Batt, 1st Battalion-148th Field Artillery Regiment-116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team
I say ‘somehow’, because the past few decades of this ‘National Defense Strategy’ has actually increased deployments, especially for the Idaho National Guard, and has not made the United States any more international friends, nor has it increased international security.
“Global security and the National Defense Strategy is important not only to us in Idaho but as a whole nation and should be important globally. This relationship has always been there, and we want to keep it strong moving forward.”-Major Ryan Batt, 1st Battalion-148th Field Artillery Regiment-116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team
Back to the pounding of Morocco. This was part of what has become the largest yearly U.S./NATO wargame on the African continent, called African Lion. About 80 Idaho Army & Air Guard personnel joined others from Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin Army National Guards, as well as a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve unit from California, and a Regular Army (RA, aka full-time active duty) unit from Texas, along with military personnel from Brazil, NATO-Canada, Ghana, Morocco, NATO-Netherlands, Senegal, Tunisia and NATO-United Kingdom. Whew, more than 8-thousand military personnel!
Originally, Exercise African Lion started as a computer simulation in 1998, between a U.S. Army airborne unit in NATO-Italy and an airborne unit in Morocco. It was held every two years. By 2005, it involved actual military personnel on the ground in Morocco. In 2007 it became a yearly wargame, involving more and more U.S. personnel and other NATO countries (again proving that this type of National Defense Strategy does not reduce deployments, or anything else). Interestingly, in March 2020, General Stephen Townsend, the commander of U.S. Africa Command (USAfriComm), stated “African Lion has been significantly reduced in scale and scope based on concerns that we all have about the safety of our troops and those of our partners.” Really?
The Idaho National Guard also took part in African Lion in March 2019.
The days of Idaho’s M109A6 Paladins are numbered; during this wargame it was revealed that Idaho will be getting the new M109A7 (and I say don’t call it a Paladin because it is a totally different beast).

Anybody who spends some time on social media knows there are plenty of free advice/video posts about how to preserve food at home, yet the University of Idaho apparently thinks they can make money off food preservation classes.
The University of Idaho is based in northern Idaho’s Moscow (don’t confuse with Idaho State University based in Pocatello), but is offering home-food-preservation classes in eastern Idaho’s City of Rigby, and southeast Idaho’s City of Pocatello, for a price!
The cost to attend the entire food preservation series of classes is $75, or, if you want just one or two classes the price is $15 per class. There are five classes, registration must be done before 24FEB2023. A quick scan of the classes revealed to me that, yes, you can find these basic food preservation ideas online and for free!
And if you live in Napoleon Dynamite country, the U of I offers an online Preserve@Home course in Franklin County, for $35 bucks beginning 19JAN2023! Yes, you can find the info free, elsewhere!
If you don’t like social media, then you can always checkout the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s National Center for Home Food Preservation, yes it is free! The state and federal taxpayer funded National Center for Home Food Preservation has instructions for canning, drying, freezing, smoking/curing, fermenting, pickling, jams/jellys, and storage (whew)!

Idaho’s reign as a top destination for domestic migrants (U.S. citizens leaving their states for The Gem State) was short lived, and is now reversing; more people leaving than coming in!
I’ve documented how for decades the entrenched, arrogant, leaders of Idaho boasted of how things were booming in Idaho, using domestic migration as one of their proofs. They claimed that one reason for the influx of domestic migrants, was that Idaho was full of good paying jobs. Anybody that has lived in Idaho for as long as I have knew that was a bold face lie! I have experienced what I call revolving door employment for almost 20 years as employer after employer downsized or halted operations altogether! If it wasn’t for the fact that my property is paid for, I would have been forced to move a long time ago. (I am not here for the money, I love the climate and the space, which apparently is what many recent newbies to Idaho don’t like)
Here’s another wake up call for our fearless leaders: There was only a slight uptick in Idaho’s overall population, from 2010 to 2020. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the sparse population of the geographically large state of Idaho went from 1.8-million to only 1.9-million, despite a decade of ‘leaders’ telling us that the population was booming. The overwhelming majority of that population growth took place in the Boise Metro Area (Treasure Valley, Southwestern Idaho region).
Here’s another reality check: More than 61% of land in Idaho is owned by the federal government. Less than 30% of available land is privately held. So, in reality the relatively small population is partly due to lack of available privately owned land. There is also the fact that one of President Joseph Robinette Biden Junior’s first executive orders (America the Beautiful Initiative, or 30×30 order) makes it even harder to make land available in Idaho:
The state government owns land, and has been selling it off, not just to make more land available, but it has become a major revenue source for the state government (which might explain its mysterious budget surplus).
KTVB: Idaho turns to remote bidding to increase state-owned land sales
Men’sJournal: Study Finds Idaho Illegally Sold Public Land for 97 Years
Then there’s the fact that rich people from other states (Texas) are buying up private property and then using it to block access to public lands:
By 2020, moving company trackers had ranked Idaho as the number three destination, but now, just two years later an Atlanta, Georgia, moving assistance company reports that Idaho has dropped to 20th position, and the region of Eastern Idaho is experiencing a mass exodus!
While the Move Buddha report admits that people are changing their minds about moving to Idaho, the author still says Idaho is “The Place to Go”! Move Buddha reports that the Eastern Idaho city of Rexburg, home to the Brigham Young University-Idaho, is bleeding residents, and blames it on lack of jobs. According to Move Buddha’s “in-to-out” formula, for every 49 people moving into Rexburg, 1-hundered are leaving! In Rexburg’s next door city of Idaho Falls, once the economic darling of Eastern Idaho, there are now 1-hundred people leaving for every 95 moving in!
But even the top five cities that people still want to move to are on the decline, with Southwestern Idaho’s Eagle leading the pack with a 56% decrease in Move Buddha’s “in-to-out ratio”.
107.9LITEFM: Idaho experiences largest migration drop in entire U.S.!
KBOI: Idaho sees a 60% decline in new people moving in from 2020.

05DEC2018:
There is still massive housing construction going on in Idaho, all across the state, it has been going on since the late 1990s. Housing developers and politicians have always claimed it is because the population is booming, and it is necessary to keep housing costs down. That is interesting, because homes prices/values skyrocketed, anyway. Just this year, Bannock County jacked up the value of my property to where they now consider it worth four times what I paid in 1997, despite the massive home construction that is still going on around my neighborhood! In 1997, my neighborhood was surrounded on the south and west sides by farm fields. By 1999, the farm land was sold and huge housing tracts were under construction. This never let up, year after year the city slowly moved westward, annexing County territory, farm land being sold-off and new housing development taking its place. The claim was that the population and economy is booming, yet starting in 2001, I witnessed, experienced and documented the economic destruction in my part of Bannock County, and it has never recovered.
Prices for homes are finally ticking down in Idaho, but don’t blame the Pandemic, the massive focus on property development, that was never justified, is to blame. Now, the mass exodus that is beginning to take place will push Idaho’s housing market into the Pit of Hell.

A HISTORY LESSON IN ECONOMIC DECLINE: POCATELLO’S OLD FRED MEYER & ALBERTSONS ON YELLOWSTONE AVE (Alameda Plaza), DID NOT CLOSE DOWN IN THE 1990S (This story is more relevant because Kroger owned Fred Meyer is now celebrating 20 years at their ‘new’ location [which used to be the Pocatello Mall] in Pocatello. Their old location was just across the street [where the ‘new’ Winco is] in the Alameda Plaza, back in the 1990s!)
At about 18:00, 09AUG2022, I noticed a lot of smoke northeast of where I live in Chubbuck, Idaho.
The fire grew as the sun went down.
It glowed through out the night. The wind was blowing north, northeast. During the night a strong windstorm blew in from the west (it was not forecasted). The next day, local news media reported the fire was located on the east side of the Fort Hall Reservation, homes were evacuated, burning at least 2-thousand-5-hundred acers (more than 1000 hectares). By the afternoon there were conflicting reports about the fire; TV news said it was under control and evacuations canceled, while newspapers reported it had re-ignited, was spreading and forcing more evacuations. I believe the newspapers because there was a sudden non-stop bucket brigade of water bomber flights from the Pocatello Airtanker Base.
Some video I made from my backyard, of Air Tractors and a MD87, flying over Chubbuck, on their way to bomb the Ross Fork Fire:
It should be noted that the Pocatello Airtanker Base, on the Pocatello Regional Airport, was undergoing an expansion of its ‘pit’ operations for water bombers, and was not expected to be operational until July, or “until further notice”. Obviously, the U.S. Forest Service airtanker operations are now up and running. That is what you call ‘perfect timing’!
Some video I made of an Air Tractor and RJ85 being put to bed after a busy day of water bombing (they can only water-bomb during daylight):
As of 23:30, 10AUG2022, the Ross Fork Fire is still burning. The wind changed direction and kicked-up, this time we got teased with a little bit of rain. Thunderstorms are forecasted, but they’ve been bringing us more lightning than needed rain. There was also a wildfire in Power County, west of here, but it is supposedly extinguished.

Recently in the U.S. state of Idaho, apparently (supposedly) a City of Pocatello council person inquired about the funding for the Pocatello Arts Council. It sounded very much like she was ‘fishing’ for ways to appropriate some of that funding for local government use, not unusual for a city council that has a history of non-transparent, and even non-existent, financial record keeping. There is one major problem; the Pocatello Arts Council is not a government operation, it is a non-governmental organization (NGO) created and funded totally by donations!
For Summer 2022, the Pocatello Arts Council has teamed-up with many other organizations to bring free-to-the-public Shakespeare performances at the Idaho State University (ISU), in Pocatello.
On July 21st, Twelfth Night will be performed on The Quad, starting at 18:30 (6:30PM). Then King Lear makes an appearance on July 23rd, same location. Food trucks will be staged, but they are not free, bring money or bring your own food.
For those wanting more academic information about some guy named Shakespeare, on the 20th of July there is a free lecture (with live sample performances) at the Marshall Public Library, in the Old Town part of Pocatello.
The lecture is held before the theatrical plays take place so you’ll get a better understanding of the mind-set of The Bard.
In October 1991, the Pocatello Arts Council was created by a generous grant from an individual. The council members are not paid a dime, they are volunteering their own time and efforts. While Pocatello Arts Council is a non-taxpayer funded NGO, they do serve as an ‘advisory council’ to the Mayor of Pocatello.

In a nearly abandoned rail car repair shop, a father and son team are trying to combine machining techniques and artistry to create almost bulletproof family photos, and maybe a local artists’ gallery next to their machine shop.
The rail car shop is located at the south end of the old town area of Pocatello, Idaho. It used to be run by Alpha Pacific Incorporated (not to be confused with the Chinese company ALPHA PACIFIC ENGINEERING & CONTRACTING, now operating out of California), now a shadow of itself called Alpha Engineers Incorporated (almost killed off by the fateful decision of city and county officials to refuse Union Pacific’s request to make Pocatello its Pacific Northwest depot).
There’s a lot of forgotten railroad history in the building.
But that’s not what I want to write about.
The good old (relatively) German made vertical CNC (computer numerical control) machine, Chiron FZ 08 W.
Eric V. Erickson, and his son Andrew, are using it to replicate photos and even smart phone selfie pics onto aluminum, plexiglas, anything non-fibrous.
If you prefer, you can get cool lighting affects etching your selfie into ‘plastic’. Unfortunately it’s not ‘bulletproof’ and can get scratched up if you’re not careful with it.
But there’s a magical thing you can do with the aluminum plate, automotive grease and a glass plate!
That’s not an old timey photo of Tesla (no, not the car, the ancient electromagnetic genius), it’s an etched aluminum plate covered in grease, then a glass plate is placed over it, sandwiching the grease between the two and turning it into an almost bulletproof photo! There are other ways to color affect the aluminum, like anodizing (and maybe powder coating?), but it’ll drive up the price. Oh yeah, expect to pay around $150 for a basic engraving (more for anything extra like anodizing), so it’s only for memorializing those special family moments. I forgot to measure the examples, I think the aluminum country singer was like 5×6 inches, and the plastic selfie was maybe 9×12?
Wait, what about the art gallery? There are a couple of areas they hope to make available for local artists to display their works, one in the small foyer….
…and a larger area up the stares.
For much more accurate (but you might also get more confused, because these guys speak only ‘Technical’) info call Erickson Design and Machine at (928) 299-9723, or email at [email protected].

The sky around eastern Idaho is socked in with smoke as the 2017-18 wildfire season roars up (I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so smokey around here, and I’ve been here 20 years). The water bombing aircraft based at Pocatello Airport were busy during daylight; non-stop landings, reloading, take-offs, for hours on-end until dark.

“As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint.”-official Staples statement
There are two main lies being propagated by unAmerican corporate America (and the government that supports those corporations): Not enough ‘qualified’ U.S. citizens to fill vacant positions, and internet competition.
On 20 July 2017, Mitt Romney co-founded wunderkind Staples announced they will shutdown their Pocatello, Idaho, location in August. They blame “customers” for shopping online.
Remember, Staples sells online as well as in brick-n-mortar stores.
I’ve pointed out before that online sales aren’t that big. Just this year Karen Edwards, instructor at University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality Retailing and Sport Management, stated to local news media that internet sales make up only 10%-15% of all U.S. retail sales! This is really part of a conspiracy by the retail industry to shift to internet only operations, mainly because the cost of operating a brick-n-mortar store (especially rent and utilities) now outweighs sales at those stores.
Don’t blame the Internet: Idaho internet sales tax collections flat-line!
