On 11JAN2019 the U.S. Army activated its first ever Intelligence, Information, Cyber, Electronic Warfare and Space
Detachment, as part of the new Multi Domain Task Force.

The unit is based at Fort Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

This has been discussed for several years now, it’s essentially an evolution of Cyber Command.  In 2013 the evil Rand Corporation published a PDF supporting the creation of Cyber Warfare units.

In Summer 2018 the U.S. Army took part in the biennial RIMPAC (aka Rim of the Pacific Exercise) as a Multi Domain Task Force.  They worked alongside Japanese military forces in conducting ‘live-fire’ missile launches from Hawaii.

In September 2018, Multi Domain Task Force took part in Valiant Shield in Guam.   Interestingly, despite being part of Cyber Warfare ops the Multi Domain Task Force has been operating as an artillery unit, so far.

Also in September 2018, the Army Cyber Command conducted Cyber Blitz in New Jersey: “The integration of Information Operations, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber enables a traditional infantry brigade to quickly enter and fight within an adaptive, demanding cyber training environment. F-15E Strike Eagles belonging to Idaho’s Mountain Home Air Force Base have been spotted in Southwest Asia (Middle East).

The 391st Fight Squadron ‘Bold Tigers’ consists of about 180 personnel operating or maintaining more than 20 aircraft.   The pics in this article were taken 04-05JAN2019, at an undisclosed location in the Middle East.

In reality the majority of USAF personnel do not fly aircraft (less than 4% of Airmen are pilots), the hi-tech hi-dollar airborne weapons require a massive amount of ground support personnel to support.  This is contrary to what we were told during the Cold War, the Air Force bean counters always claimed that hi-tech would reduce the need for humans: “It’s a constant double and triple checking. Millions of U.S. citizens have family and friends employed by the U.S. military and deployed to other countries, now imagine millions of ‘care packages’ being sent to those military personnel.  I remember guys getting books, music cassette tapes (remember those?), cookies, candy, but I don’t remember anybody getting drugs or coffee.  Coffee?

Turns out that sending coffee to military personnel overseas is just as ‘illegal’ as sending illegal drugs.  Not just coffee, but prescription drugs and even food supplements are banned, yet people still do it and they get caught.

1:600 Moskva: Aurora vs Airfix

One of the first ship kits I built was the 1:600 scale Aurora Moscow helicopter anti-submarine ship (not to be confused with the Moskva of the Atlant class of missile cruisers, aka Project 1164).  I also built the Airfix version, and there are differences.

Back then it was the final two decades of the Cold War (unbeknownst to both NATO and Warsaw Pact) and we average kit builders in the United States didn’t have access to reliable information on Warsaw Pact vehicles.  Most publications in English would only say that what we now know was Project 1123 Kondor couldn’t handle rough seas, and that production was halted after only two ships were launched.  I always doubted such NATO propaganda because if the ships were so bad why were they in use until the mid-1990s?

Today we do have access to reliable info (including Kagero Top Drawings #55 book, with detailed scale drawings of things like missile launchers, for those of us who read English), and we have at least one aftermarket detailing set for the 1:600 scale Moskva.  I spent a lot of money on a Russian magazine supplement before learning about the Kagero book.  I also got a hold of the photo etched set #618 by White Ensign.

The Aurora Moscow was first issued in 1969, and for some reason last issued in 1972.  Airfix issued their Moskva in 1973, and as far as I know last issued it in the late 1990s.  In the early 1980s it was issued in the U.S. under the MPC brand.

The Aurora and Airfix hulls are just short of 13 inches (33cm) long, the Aurora being slightly shorter than Airfix.  The Aurora hull is also taller and skinnier than the Airfix hull.  The anchors are molded onto the Aurora hull and both kits have different shaped hull openings and portholes.

Both kits have chunky plastic for the radar antennae. Both kits do not come with missiles for the missile launchers.  Both kits do not have the massive retractable sonar dome located towards the front of the bottom of the hull.  It was this massive dome that was probably the reason the tall ship reportedly nose dived into the water during rough seas.  Apparently NATO was unaware of this dome during the Cold War, or for some reason it was never mentioned in publications made available to the general public.

The Airfix Kamov helicopters are molded in two halves and don’t look good.  The Aurora helicopters are molded in one piece, they look good but not quite like Kamovs (more like Kamovs than Airfix).  The plus with the Aurora kit is you get optional retracted/folded rotor blades.  The Aurora deck is one piece with more detailing than Airfix, and even has optional position hanger doors and space in the superstructure/funnel (molded in two pieces) area.  The Airfix deck is in three pieces, it has optional position hanger doors but the space in the superstructure/funnel (molded in three pieces) is blanked off.  The Airfix helicopter deck has recessed spaces to represent elevators.

The big open ass, I mean aft end, I mean stern of the ship is plane Jane in the Aurora kit, with two life boats.  There’s some kind of blocky details in the Airfix kit.  Aurora gives you davits to hang the life boats on, while Airfix gives you upside down ‘U’s to set them on.  The propellers, I mean screws are different in shape and size between the two kits.

The ship has two large cranes, Aurora uses chunks of plastic to represent them while Airfix gives you a better looking multi-part system.

The White Ensign photo etched set has thin brass parts for the radars, railings, davits, cranes, hanger doors, missile launcher detailing, much better details for the ass end, ship name plates (Moscow & Leningrad) and parts for the Airfix helicopters (including tini-tiny landing gear parts which’l probably bend under the weight of the plastic).  A major problem with White Ensign’s instructions is that they leave out where to use the differently shaped hand rails.  Also, you get PE rotor blades in the extended position, but not retracted.

If you love 1:600 scale ships the best way to get a good looking and close to accurate Moskva/Leningrád is to kit bash the Airfix and Aurora kits, use the White Ensign Models PE set, and scratch build missiles, as well as the sonar domes under the hull.

Note: Research is also key to making as accurate a Project 1123 as you can.  The ships had numerous different hull numbers and even different ‘paint jobs’ over the decades.  You’ll need to find color photographs of a specific hull number, especially overhead views which’l reveal what color/colors the decks were painted.

ALASKA: Alyeska Pipeline Service Company warned “Many jobs will be modified, and some eliminated, at Alyeska and in some contractor companies.”

ARIZONA: SCA tissue factory in Bellemont closing, 120 jobs lost

ARKANSAS: Iconic Acme Brick Company shutting down a factory in Fort Smith, blaming the company’s restructuring on “ever changing demands of the market”.

CALIFORNIA: Disney laying off an undisclosed number of Consumer Products workers, blaming it on a ‘partial’ merger with 21st Century Fox and a crash in revenues of 8%.  Silgan Containers issued yet another WARN, this time 49 jobs in  Sacramento gone before Thanksgiving. In Berkeley, after 84 years (surviving The Great Depression and numerous recessions) Pacific Steel Casting factory suddenly put up for auction, having never recovered from the 2008 ‘recession’.  Extreme Logistics Solutions issued a shutdown WARN  for its Victorville operations, 56 jobs gone right after Xmas. Peninsula Packaging issued a shutdown WARN for its Hollister ops, 156 jobs gone before Thanksgiving!  Construction company Brinderson issued a layoff WARN for ops in Martinez, 98 jobs gone before Thanksgiving.  Golden State Overnight Delivery Service issued yet another WARN, this time 67 jobs in  Santa Clarita gone by October. Florida based door maker Masonite issued a shutdown WARN for its factory in Stockton, 131 jobs gone in March 2019! Florida based manufacturer Jabil issued shutdown WARNs for two California factories, 435 jobs gone before Thanksgiving!

COLORADO:  Oil company Balusa Holdings now chapter 7 bankrupt busted and liquidating, claiming it made no revenues in 2018.

FLORIDA: Essentra Packaging shutting down ops in Largo, 81 jobs gone.  Illinois based Atkore International also shutting down ops in Largo, 101 jobs gone!

GEORGIA: Voith Paper Fabrics eliminating 53 jobs. 

INDIANA: Michigan based Federal-Mogul Motorparts shutting down a distribution center in Indianapolis, 83 jobs gone by Spring 2019.  Cardinal Metal suddenly laid off 79 people in Kokomo, due to the sudden loss of a “key customer”.  LGSTX Distribution Services suddenly shutdown its Indianapolis location, 256 jobs gone due to the loss of its contract with United States Postal Service!  Quality Packaging Specialists issued a shutdown WARN for its Mooresville location, 85 jobs gone right after Xmas.

KENTUCKY:  Berry shutting down its films, laminates, and adhesives factory in Augusta, 330 jobs gone probably in connection with Berry taking over a competitor earlier this year, or possibly due to reduced orders by Proctor & Gamble, or both!

MINNESOTA: Metal maker SSAB Minnesota laid off ten people.

MISSISSIPPI: Ethanol maker Ergon shutting down its factory in Vicksburg, about 30 jobs gone by Xmas due to crashing profit margins.

NEW YORK: Shoe Maker P.W. Minor eliminating at least 45 jobs in Batavia, saying it’s the only way to keep the shoe factory open (P.W. Minor also issued a WARN of potential shutdown affecting 82 jobs).  Once U.S. based beauty products company Avon shutting down its factory in Rye, 105 jobs gone by May 2019!    Bigname Commerce issued a shutdown WARN for its stationary factory in Amityville, 41 jobs gone before Xmas due to consolidation.  State Department of Environmental Conservation ordered Sand Land Corporation to halt mining ops in Noyack.

NORTH CAROLINA:  Product Quest suddenly shutdown its beauty care factories in Kannapolis and Concord, and went chapter 11 bankrupt busted, 296 jobs gone!   Germany owned Daimler Trucks-Thomas Built Buses suddenly laid off 115 people, blaming it on “the cyclical nature of our business”!

OHIO: PTC Alliance could see 94 layoffs in November

Taxpayer funded Wright Patterson Air Force Base held a Life Cycle Industry Days presentation as part of “Government and Industry better focusing our collective energies ‘out-innovating’ our opponents”, including a focus on video games and U.S. military sales to other countries.  Also, on 11-12 September taxpayer funded Defense Logistics Agency held a free class at the Defense Supply Center Columbus, to teach almost 50 civilian business how to sell to the taxpayer raping government.   

Also, the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime revealed that it spent more than 120-million tax dollars on small businesses in Ohio, just in the first three quarters of fiscal year 2018!

OREGON: Whew, what’s that smell?  Schmidt’s Deodorant shutting down its factory in Portland, 52 U.S. jobs gone as a result of being taken over by British empire United Kingdom based Unilever.

PENNSYLVANIA: ArcelorMittal Plate issued a layoff WARN, 17 jobs in Conshohocken gone before Xmas.  Uniform maker for the ‘public safety’ sector Elbeco issued a shutdown WARN for its Frackville factory, 71 jobs gone before Xmas. CEVA Logistics issued a shutdown WARN for its Bedford location, 92 jobs gone before Thanksgiving.  Taxpayer funded DLA (Defense Logistics Agency) Troop Support Clothing and Textiles held a National Industries for the Blind’s annual Textile Apparel Group conference on 06 September in Philadelphia.

TENNESSEE: Fred’s Pharmacy shutting down its distribution center in Memphis, 80 jobs gone. 

VIRGINIA: 

The taxpayer funded Defense Logistics Agency staged 115 trailers at Fort A.P. Hill in preparations for Hurricane Florence.  The DLA also staged emergency equipment in North Carolina and Alabama.

WISCONSIN: ACCO shutting down its paper clip factory in Pleasant Prairie, 54 remaining jobs gone due to consolidation ops (in May 150 people were laid off without warning). Can maker Silgan Containers issued a layoff WARN, 30 jobs in Plover gone before Thanksgiving.

ALABAMA: Car parts maker Federal-Mogul eliminating an additional 47 jobs at its factory in Jacksonville, in September.  Since December 2017,  Federal-Mogul has killed at least 121 jobs in Alabama.

ALASKA: Vigor Alaska eliminating 80 shipyard jobs by Xmas, due to lack of contracts.

CALIFORNIA: Taxpayer funded General Dynamics eliminating 1-thousand-493 NASSCO jobs (according to official WARN) in San Diego, by the end of September, supposedly due to an accident involving a USN ship and a new floating dry dock!  Automotive industry company MIDA Industries issued a layoff WARN for its ops in Fremont, 55 jobs gone by September.  Jacobson Warehouse Company issued a shutdown WARN for its Tracy location, 74 jobs gone by mid-October. Golden State Overnight Delivery Service eliminating 158 jobs in Santa Fe and Ontario, by the end of September!

COLORADO:  Wood pellet maker Confluence Energy now chapter 11 bankrupt busted due to having more debts than assets, the owner says wood pellet sales started dropping after petroleum prices started going down in 2010.

CONNECTICUT: France based pen/lighter maker Bic began laying off people at its Milford lighter refill factory, so far 25 people have been let go due to a sudden 11% crash in lighter sales.

FLORIDA: Taxsucker Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky eliminating 5-hundred jobs, near Jupiter, due to the U.S. government buying fewer Black Hawk helicopters!

GEORGIA: What economic recovery? Anchor Glass eliminating 150 jobs (half its Georgia employees) and shutting down a production line in Warner Robins, due to crashing sales of its products!  Industry ‘solutions’ company Alorica laid off 635 people!  Pillow maker Hollander Sleep Products eliminating 225 jobs!

HAWAII: Island Energy Services halts oil refinery ops, 85 jobs gone.

ILLINOIS:  Stack-On-Products moving 150 Chicago area jobs to Mexico, supposedly to avoid Chinese tariffs! Japan based rail car maker Nippon Sharyo shutting down its failed six years old Rochelle factory, hundreds of U.S. jobs lost due to crashing sales, and its prototype double-decker passenger car failing safety tests.  Rail support company Auto Releasing issued a WARN, 68 jobs gone as a result of losing a contract with Fiat-Chrysler.  Home light fixture maker Acuity Brands Lighting issued a WARN, 298 jobs in Des Plain gone due to “reorganization”!  Urethane product maker Armacell issued a WARN, 87 jobs in South Holland gone mid-October.   Tobacco wholesaler Follett Higher Ed Group-Aurora Service Center issued a WARN, 81 jobs gone by February 2019.

IOWA:  It was discovered that RV maker Winnebago quietly laid off 35 people, in Forest City, at the end of July.

KENTUCKY:  Ladder maker Werner shutting down its Louisville factory, 119 jobs gone by March 2019!

MINNESOTA: Mattress maker Tempur-Sealy shutting down its Saint Paul factory, eliminating 99 jobs in September due to “the closure of a large customer’s nearby distribution center”.  First Transit issued a WARN, 90 jobs in Roseville gone by October.

NEW YORK: General Electric (GE) continues job killing, this time 225 jobs in Schenectady being eliminated due to “ongoing challenges facing the power industry and a 45-percent decline in volume”!

NORTH CAROLINA:  Bankrupt furniture maker Heritage Home Group shutting down Broyhill factories in Caldwell County, 712 jobs gone due to failed attempts to sell-off Broyhill!  A bankruptcy judge set an auction date of 18OCT2018 for Heritage Home Group brands Broyhill and Thomasville.  Paper-packaging maker WestRock shutting down its factory in Charlotte, 170 jobs gone due to consolidation ops, starting in October!

OKLAHOMA: Oil company Phillips-Conoco suddenly laid off 1-hundred people in Oklahoma and Texas, as part of plans to layoff thousands of people over the next few years!

PENNSYLVANIA: Battery maker Axion Power now chapter 7 bankrupt and liquidating. Korea based Hyundai shutting down its now failed rail car factory in Philadelphia, 3-hundred jobs gone due to faulty welding on many rebuilt taxpayer funded SEPTA rail cars!  Dedicated Logistics issued a shutdown WARN for its ops in Langhorn, 120 jobs gone by the end of October!  Steel maker ArcelorMittal Plate laying off 47 people by November.

TENNESSEE: Construction vehicle maker Caterpillar shutting down its Dyersburg factory, 85 jobs gone by October.

Already Mattel laid off 140 people at its El Segundo HQ! Furniture company Minson Corporation issued a shutdown WARN for its Montebello ops, 113 jobs gone by September!  Freight Handlers Incorporated (FHI) issued a shutdown WARN for its Riverside ops, 115 jobs gone by September! Recycler Aqua Metals issued a shutdown WARN for its Alameda location, 12 jobs gone in September.  Golden State Overnight Delivery Service issued layoff WARNs for its Gardena and Santa Ana ops, 138 jobs gone mid-September!  ITW Bay Area Label issued a shutdown WARN for its San Jose ops, 54 jobs gone by October.  MV Transportation eliminating 135 jobs in Visalia, by the end of September!

ILLINOIS: Iconic cosmetics maker/seller Avon (now known as New Avon) just sold-off its last U.S. factory, in Morton Grove-Chicago, to a French company, 3-hundred to 4-hundred jobs affected!  The French company will make products for British empire United Kingdom owned Walgreens-Boots Alliance.  One of the last U.S. plastic model kit and RC toy manufacturers/distributors, Hobbico, officially chapter 7 bankrupt dead, resulting in iconic Revell kits being 100% German owned.  In Chicago, MW Industries issued a shutdown WARN, 49 jobs gone by Xmas.  In Aurora, Jacobson Warehouse issued a shutdown WARN, 134 jobs gone due to consolidation operations!  Stack-On Products issued shutdown WARNs for its operations in Wauconda and McHenry, 153 jobs gone in October!

INDIANA:  In Bristol, Diversified Machine warning 5-hundred employees of layoffs due to losing a contract with Ford!   Chapter 7 bankrupt and suddenly dead Koontz-Wagner Custom Controls suddenly laid off 104 people (according to official WARN) at its now dead South Bend factory and HQ, one employee told local news media there was no warning: “No one knew about it to 9 o’ clock this morning when we had a meeting and they told us ‘We are shutting the doors. Get your stuff it’s time to leave.'”-Ron Randolph, employee for 16 years

Japan based Wire-Maker TOKUSEN Says it Will Idle Clark County Operation

IOWA: Construction industry tool maker Black Cat Wear Parts laid off ten people, blaming it on the tariff war with British empire Canada.  Winnebago Industries eliminating 31 jobs by the end of August.

KENTUCKY: Greeting card maker American Greetings shutting down its factory in Bardstown, more than 250 jobs lost between September 2018 and February 2019!

MASSACHUSETTS: Partly taxpayer funded uniform maker Pepperell Mills now chapter 11 bankrupt busted and liquidating.  Technetics Group shutting down ops in Oxford due to “the current industrial gas turbine market”, 97 jobs lost.

MINNESOTA: United Sports Brands eliminating 20 jobs in Minnetonka, by November.

MISSOURI: Lawnmower engine maker Briggs and Stratton cutting production and warning of mass layoffs at its factory in Popular Bluff, in “coming weeks”, due to lack of sales.  Also in Popular Bluff, Mid Continent Nail Corporation cut production by half and laid off 60 people, blaming lack of sales on new tariff wars.

NEW YORK:  Fischer Price laid off 50 people at its HQ, as part of parent company Mattel’s plan to eliminate thousand of jobs globally!  Advanced Motors and Drives issued a layoff WARN for its East Syracuse location, 51 jobs gone between August 2018 and March 2019.  Verrino Construction Services now chapter 11 bankrupt busted due to lack of cash caused by lack of sales. Hebeler Process Solutions issued layoff WARNs, at least 60 jobs gone in September due to a sudden loss of sales from a major customer.

NORTH CAROLINA: American Tire Distributors suddenly laid off 1-hundred people because “…the industry is going through its largest change in decades”.  Home furnishings maker Heritage Home Group (Broyhill, Lane, Thomasville, and Drexel Heritage) now chapter 11 bankrupt busted.  Mattress maker Serta Simmons shutting down its factory in Whitsett, 112 jobs gone by September!

OHIO: Chinese owned (Hong Kong) vacuum cleaner maker TTI Floor Care (Oreck) issued a shutdown WARN for its Glenwillow ops, at least 75 jobs gone starting in September due “to changing business circumstances” forcing the company to consolidate operations.  Germany based Siemens issued a shutdown WARN for its Aero-Derivative Gas Turbine ops, 134 jobs gone “due to conditions within the global energy market”.

OKLAHOMA: Aircraft parts maker NORDAM Group now chapter 11 bankrupt busted due to problems with Pratt & Whitney Canada, local news media say NORDAM is the second biggest employer in the state.

PENNSYLVANIA: ArcelorMittal Plate issued a layoff WARN, 125 people in Conshohocken jobless by September!  Jacobson Warehouse issued a shutdown WARN for its Lancaster ops, 62 jobs gone in September.

TEXAS: Bankrupt and suddenly dead Indiana based Koontz-Wagner Custom Controls suddenly laid off 52 people at its now dead Houston ops.

WASHINGTON: Germany based logistics company Arvato issued a shutdown WARN for its Yakima ops, 168 jobs gone by the end of September!

Also in August, while many local Idaho school districts struggle, grade school students on Mountain Home AFB got 2-hundred new backpacks filled with supplies, courtesy of the Airman and Family Readiness Center’s Back to School Brigade.

In July, F-15E Strike Eagles from Mountain Home AFB, along with C-17 transports from Travis AFB in California, converged on Idaho National Guard’s Gowen Field for what’s called Adaptive Base Training (aka Gunfighter Flag 18-3).  The Louisiana National Guard’s 159th Fighter Wing joined in, as well as Idaho National Guard A-10Cs.
