Boise River Photography Journal July 20th 2021

On Tuesday last week, I went for a stroll along the Boise River here in Boise, Idaho. To my delight, all the plants have tripled in size since I saw them last, about two months ago. They’ve grown considerably; the bare gravel river banks are now nearly covered in growth. It was a fun trek through all the leaves, sand, gravel, water, and several spider webs. One could follow the sound of the river through the thick green walls of natural labyrinth.

There are plenty of useful plants here, which were most likely intentionally planted. This part of the Boise River is technically the Boise River Park, and is maintained by the Parks and Recreation department. I really appreciate their methods of leaving it pretty much alone save for repairing water erosion and cleaning up human disturbances. I’m grateful we have the Greenbelt here where we can visit a bit of wildlife in the middle of the city. In Japan, research has proven that taking time to just be in nature is beneficial to all areas of our health. Doctors now prescribe Shirin Roku, or Forest Bathing, to reduce stress, which is the cause of a myriad of health problems. In addition, many of these plants that grow wild and may be considered weeds are actually medicinal and are a good source of minerals and vitamins.

This Mullein is the cutest one I’ve seen. It’s only one foot tall! I was collecting mullein flowers to create a cough syrup. I’ve put them in sugar to ferment in a jar for a few weeks in the sun. I’m really curious to see if this works come fall!

Cascadia Rising: Operation Black Wind, Bremerton hit by massive quake & contamination?

Preparations for the overdue Cascadia Event continues, this time striking the U.S. Navy’s hospital on Bremerton, Washington.

During the second week of July 2021, Naval Hospital Bremerton conducted Operation Black Wind (in conjunction with Citadel Rumble) to assess how to respond to a catastrophic natural disaster.

Operation Black Wind’s scenario is set immediately after ‘a sudden and significant seismic event’ that lasted for at least one minute.  It also involved military personnel becoming sick due to a haz-mat truck overturning as a result of the quake.  The scenario of massive amounts of hazardous materials being released and affecting the local population has only recently been added to the U.S. Department of Defense/FEMA’s disaster response training.

Citadel Rumble is a yearly large scale U.S. Navy ‘all hazard exercise’ held across the West Coast of the United States: “This exercise readies our personnel for response and recovery before, during and after a natural disaster or other all-hazard events. Installations in our West Coast regions face risk of damaging earthquakes and wildfire encroachment, so this training is vital to expedite recovery and maintain mission readiness should such events occur.”– Mark Sinder, Director of Operations for Commander, Navy Installations Command

Alaska is known for Ring of Fire earthquakes and volcanoes, so far this year lots of quakes, and the United States Geological Survey/Alaska Volcano Observatory lists five volcanoes as “restless” and even raised alert levels for some.

On 09JUL2021, the Alaska Air National Guard tried a new-to-them piece of disaster response equipment; the Disaster Relief Mobile Kitchen Trailer (DRMKT).

It’s all part of efforts to prepare for natural disasters in the Arctic-Pacific region.

The fattest grasshopper I’ve seen in the 25 years I’ve lived in Southeastern Idaho was trying to get in my back door.

On 07JUL2021, active duty military, and National Guard medical personnel from across the United States, took over Greenville High School, in Mississippi.

Operations involving food service, dentistry, ambulance service, optometry, psychiatric care, and even drug distribution (pharmacy) were carried out as part of Delta Wellness Mission 2021.  Greenville High School was one of three locations used for the Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) operation.

The military uses IRTs as one way to train for disaster response, but Delta Wellness Mission 2021 is not a drill or training exercise, it is a continuation, under a new name, of a program started under the Obama Administration to provide free healthcare and food service to local residents.

The taxpayer funded military medical service for silly-vilians program was started in 2014 (OPERATION APPALACHIAN CARE; PROOF OBAMACARE-ACA FAILED, AND OBAMA KNEW IT DID!).

The official 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season has begun, and the U.S. state of Georgia warmed-up the latest in emergency field kitchen technologies.

It’s known as Disaster Relief Mobilized Kitchen Trailer (DRMKT).  It was set up by the Georgia Air National Guard (ANG) on Robins Air Force Base (AFB), 10JUL2021.

In December 2020, North Carolina’s ANG got a brand new DRMKT: “We developed the Disaster Relief Mobile Kitchen Trailer to solve many of the inefficiencies we observed in our Nation’s response to Hurricane Katrina.”-Bill Hague, Babington Technology

In October 2020, Idaho’s 124th Fighter Wing conducted maintenance on their DRKMT: “This equipment is unique to the Air National Guard because, unlike active duty Air Force, part of our mission is to support local natural disasters.”-Technical Sergeant Audenne Valdez, Idaho ANG

Georgia ANG has already deployed their DRMKT, in October 2018.   It was sent to the town of Colquitt, where victims of Hurricane Michael were fed hot meals.

In August 2017, the Illinois and Idaho ANGs deployed their DRMKTs to the Crow Reservation in Montana.  Over several weeks, the Illinois and Idaho ANGs fed Montana Guard personnel working to build new housing on the Crow Reservation: “You can do just about anything you can do on base in this kitchen. We’ve got two full ovens, flattop grill, a stockpot station, a three-compartment sink and then a tray ration heater which can also double as making pasta or boiling water, or whatever else you need it for.”-Staff Sergeant Christopher Leigh, Montana ANG

The first use of DRMKTs during a real disaster was in 2017.  Members of Ohio and Minnesota Air National Guard units deployed, with their DRMKTs, to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

National Guard units using the DRMKT after Hurricane Maria claimed they could serve 8-hundred meals per day.  If there are a mass of people to feed then up to 1-thousand meals per 90 minutes can be achieved, but only by using ‘boil-in-bag’ meals (basically MREs).

In January 2017, Air National Guard units from across the U.S. converged their DRMKTs on FedEx Field, Washington DC, to feed security personnel during the Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump.

The Georgia ANG first received their DRMKT back in February 2015, delivered via C-130 cargo plane.

Georgia ANG tested the new DRMKT by feeding hungry Robins AFB flightline workers barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw and rolls.

In August 2014, a DRMKT was delivered to the Ohio Air National Guard  (FEMA Region 5) via C-130 transport aircraft: “The State of Ohio was selected to receive the Disaster Response Mobile Kitchen Trailer due to geographical location within FEMA Region 5, and state leadership selected the 179th Airlift Wing for this mission due to the C-130 cargo planes capability to transport the asset.”-Senior Master Sergeant Dana Togliatti

DRMKTs were developed in 2012 (called Mobile Kitchens by Babington Technology), to give National Guard units a faster response time in getting cooked meals to survivors of disasters.  Washington DC ANG video report, by Master Sergeant Gareth Buckland, unveiling of DRMKT:

DRMKTs use Babington Airtronic Burners which can use almost any type of liquid fuel.

The DRMKT has ‘frigerators, uses fans for ventilation and to keep flying insects out, all computer controlled, and thanks to liquid fuel burning cooking units the DRMKT uses only 2-thousand watts total.

When I first moved to Southeastern Idaho (25 years ago), I experienced one of the cyclical swarming of grasshoppers in the region.  When grasshoppers swarm and eat everything in site they are called Locust.

Not only was my garden in my yard being inundated with plant eating grasshoppers, but while hiking in the Scout Mountain area I observed tens of thousands of grasshoppers cannibalizing each other.  In an open field the ground was undulating, upon closer inspection it was a carpet of grasshoppers doing battle, biting each other’s heads off and then eating the loser (and I they were bleeding red blood)!

That was back in the late 1990s, today there is a new problem; grasshoppers (which can fly) and Mormon Crickets (which cannot fly) have joined forces by seemingly syncing their once individual swarm cycles, and it could have everything to do with the decades long drought in the Western United States (U.S.).

Another possible reason is that it was recently discovered that Utah state Department of Agriculture employees ‘mishandled’ federal grant funding that was intended for use in insect control programs, instead spending the money on transportation expenses!

The situation is so threatening to U.S. farming operations that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is spending $2.8-million in tax funding to suppress the new ‘Locust’.  While this situation might be new to most of us, agriculture officials have been warning since 2003 of the coming Mormon Cricket storm.

In May, the U.S. Marine Corps conducted a record 18 vehicle convoy, approximately 5-thousand miles from North Carolina to California, and then back to North Carolina.

The four weeks long drive tested the ability to control a large movement of trucks using High Frequency (HF) beyond line-of-sight highly secure radio communications. HF radios are old tech, but turns out they might provide more radio security now that most ‘enemies’ are using the latest satellite communications and other radio technologies.  Also, it seems HF can handle more data.

Volunteers with the Albanian Red Cross put on public displays of their abilities to save lives, in Vlore.  This is in conjunction with the U.S. Army’s Defender Europe-21 wargames.

EL SALVADOR:

The U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) 12th Air Force helped the USA conduct disaster response Resolute Sentinel-21, by providing medical personnel to treat 2-thousand-469 Salvadorans during a two weeks period.

USA veterinarians also treated hundreds of farm animals: “We provided anthrax vaccine to the cattle, which is a disease of human and animal health concern. We also provided pasteurella and blackleg, which are cattle diseases of economic concern. Then we dewormed them for internal and external parasites, and we also provided them with a vitamin A, E, and D injection to help with their weight gain and feed conversion.”-Major Jeffrey Baravik, U.S. Southern Command’s Task Force Bravo

JAPAN: The USAF deployed RQ-4 Global Hawk ‘drones’ to Yokota Air Base on 22MAY2021.  Not only is the RQ-4 used for combat, it can also be used for reconnaissance of natural disaster areas.  USAF video by Yasuo Osakabe:

The USAF’s 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron supported Horn of Africa disaster relief operations, while based on Manda Bay.

HONDURAS: U.S. Southern Command’s Task Force Bravo conducted a rapid response to a natural disaster exercise on Soto Cano Air Base.  The training was meant to increase co-operation between helicopter rescue units of the U.S., Guatemalan, Honduran and Salvadoran militaries.

After the rapid response exercise, on 20MAY2021 it was revealed that a new helicopter landing area was built in Tegucigalpa, to increase response time.

On 25MAY2021, U.S. funded CoViD-19 medical supplies were delivered to the Hospital Policlinico triage clinic in Siguatepeque.
