Mil 17 crash & burn

In early May 2011, one of the U.S. taxpayer funded Russian built Afghan Mil 17B(V)-5 crashed in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan.  Nine people onboard were slightly injured.

The Hip was part of the first deliveries of U.S. taxpayer funded Russian made helicopters between 2009 and 2010.  NATO/ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) reported the Mil-17s sent to Afghanistan cost about $15-million each!  Dozens more were given to Afghanistan in the years after this crash, in fact the United States signed a new delivery contract with Russia about a week after this crash.

U.S. Army Pathfinders were ordered to remove ‘sensitive’ equipment from the  NATO reporting-name Hip, and then dismantle and burn it to the ground.

USAF photo by Technical Sergeant Brian Christiansen, 12MAY2011.

Parts of the Mi-17, that could be reused, were sling loaded away by CH-47 Chinook.

The fire was started using phosphorus grenades.  When aluminum gets hot enough it burns like paper, almost nothing is left but ash.

This was not the first time a U.S. taxpayer funded ‘Hip’ was blown-up by U.S. forces.

U.S. Army photo by Corporal Patrick Gleason, 23DEC2010.

On 23DEC2010, a contracted Mi-17 was blown-up by U.S. forces on Combat Out-Post (COP) Spera in Khowst Province.  The Hip actually crashed on COP Spera several years earlier.

The result of packing an Mi-17 with excess ammo, and then blowing it up. USA photo by Corporal Patrick Gleason, 23DEC2010.

The Hip was packed with ‘left-over’ munitions, which were detonated.  The destruction of the derelict Hip was an excuse to get rid of excess ammo, as COP Spera was being shut-down.

Bare Metal: NASA Trucks saving the Trucking Industry

According to NASA, it was in 1973 that one of its employees became intrigued with how high speed tractor-trailer rigs created massive ‘suction’ as they drove-by slower moving vehicles.  In 1975 a study showed that big-rig trucks moving at 55 miles per hour (the national speed limit at that time) displaced as much as 18 tons of air for every mile traveled.  About half of the truck’s horsepower was needed just to overcome aerodynamic drag.

After leasing a cab-over tractor-trailer from a Southern California firm, Dryden (Edwards Air Force Base) researchers added sheet metal modifications that look very much like what you see on today’s big-rigs. They rounded the front corners and edges, and placed a smooth fairing on the cab’s roofs and sides extending back to the trailer. During the investigation of truck aerodynamics, the techniques honed in flight research proved highly applicable. By closing the gap between the cab and the trailer, for example, researchers discovered a significant reduction in aerodynamic drag, one resulting in 20% to 25% increase in fuel economy.

NASA estimates that its contribution to the ground vehicle industry has reduced fuel consumption by as much as 6-thousand-8-hundred gallons per year per vehicle!

Researchers also installed a boat tail structure on a passenger van.  During the tests, the vehicle’s sides were fitted with tufts, or strings, that showed air flow. The investigators concluded that rounding the vertical corners front and rear reduced drag by 40%, with at a  decrease in the vehicle’s internal volume by only 1.3%. Rounding both the vertical and horizontal corners cut drag by 54%, resulting in a 3% loss of internal volume. Adding a faired underbody helped reduce drag by about 15%.

In a kind-of control test, the passenger van was first covered with a sheet metal box with intentionally squared corners.

It was discovered that simply rounding the corners resulted in a huge reduction in aerodynamic drag.

One of the most effective, and simple, NASA discoveries is saving the trucking industry big money on fuel costs today; the ‘Airtab’.

FEMA building massive island hospital?

30 April 2020 / 04:28 (UTC-07 Tango 06) 11 Ordibehesht 1399/07 Ramadan 1441/08 Geng-Chen(4th) 4718

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) ordered Engineers from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Honolulu District, Naval Facilities Engineering Command-Marianas, Homeland Security, the territorial government of Guam, Guam Air National Guard and Guam Fire Department to find suitable locations for ‘Alternate Care Facilities’ (ACF).

Hangers at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport are being considered, 29APR2020.

Even the Hafa Adai Bingo Hall is a potential ACF site at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, 29APR2020.

FEMA officials, along with Guam’s governor, toured the U.S. Navy’s Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF), 29APR2020.

The Navy’s EMF was built for “expanded” use for military personnel infected with CoViD-19, but FEMA wants it to be expanded further in case of a massive ‘Civil Authorities Mission’.  Currently the EMF holds 150 patients.

Guam’s Air National Guard have already been busy prepping buildings for uptake of homeless people, under the guise of fighting CoViD-19.

Why all these preparations when some U.S. states are saying they’ve already passed their CoViD-19 peak?  Maybe it’s because FEMA says the CoViD-19 peak is still months away;  Guam Daily Post: FEMA says CoViD-19 peak will be in September/October.

29APR2020, video of thousands of potentially infected crew-members from USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) leaving the ship for the first time, after weeks of disinfection and quarantine.  They will be staying in hotels located across Guam.  Thousands of new Sailors/Marines, considered free of CoViD-19, will now crew the aircraft carrier:

It has just been revealed that one hotel charged the territorial government of Guam $1.6-million to house potentially infected cruise ship passengers!

So far Guam has had a total of 145 confirmed infections since March 15th.  The latest testing showed no new infections.

HOSPITAL SHORTAGE? DON’T BLAME PANDEMIC, BLAME OBAMACARE!

Hospital shortage? Don’t blame Pandemic, blame ObamaCare!

30 April 2020 / 02:30 (UTC-07 Tango 06) 11 Ordibehesht 1399/07 Ramadan 1441/08 Geng-Chen(4th) 4718

“The hospitals are packed. We still have flu season, we still have everyone else that goes to a hospital with a medical or an emergency surgical problem. That doesn’t go away during a crisis.”-Judith Persichilli, New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner

The next time you hear a whiny hospital doctor complain of ‘no room at the inn’ remember, it was ObamaCare that created a situation that resulted in literally thousands of hospital wings, and entire hospitals, being shutdown across the United States.

The mass hospital layoffs and even shutdowns of entire hospitals began after ObamaCare went into effect.  My final ObamaCare Death Spiral post was in January 2019 and shows massive layoffs were still underway!

National Guard Military Police personnel patrols the soon to be re-opened wing of the East Orange General Hospital.

Finally somebody has pulled their head out and realized that instead of wasting time and energy building temp-hospitals (aka Alternate Care Facility, Emergency Care Facility, Quarantine Center) why not re-open the closed hospitals/hospital wings? The New Jersey National Guard, under direction from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is doing just that (at taxpayer expense of course).

On 29APR2020, National Guard personnel began assembling hospital beds for use in the East Pavilion wing of the East Orange General Hospital that has been shutdown as part of a 2015 bankruptcy-sale, and as a result of a state study that showed ObamaCare was drastically reducing patient use of hospitals. It could hold 250 patients.

But this isn’t the first time the National Guard has been called in to ‘fix’ ObamaCare.  In August 2019 I wrote about Operation Appalachian Care, a National Guard healthcare operation ordered by President Barack Obama precisely because he knew ObamaCare would fail poor people.

1:1 scale Wind Tunnel models?

National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)’s first wind tunnel, at Langley Field, Virginia, was an open-circuit wind tunnel completed in 1920. It was not ‘full scale’ and was a copy of a wind tunnel used in the United Kingdom.  It was considered a failure because it could not replicate ‘scaled down wind’ due to not being airtight, and due to not being able to compress the air to match the scales of the model aircraft being used.

Approval was given to build a Full Scale Wind Tunnel, also at Langley Field.

“The tunnel is of the double-return flow type with a 30 by 60 foot open jet at the test section…..  ….The tunnel is equipped with a 6-component balance for obtaining the forces in 3 directions and the moments about the 3 axes of an airplane. All seven dial scales of the balance system are of the recording type, which permits simultaneous records to be made of all forces.”-Smith DeFrance, NACA TR #459 page 291

However a reduced scale model of the Full Scale Wind Tunnel was also built: “The excellent energy ratio obtained in the new wind tunnel of the California Institute of Technology suggests that before proceeding with our full scale tunnel design, we ought to investigate the effect on energy ratio of such factors as: 1. Small included angle for the exit cone; 2. Carefully designed return passages of circular section as far as possible, without sudden changes in cross sections; 3. Tightness of walls. It is believed that much useful information can be obtained by building a model of about 1/16 scale, that is, having a closed throat of 2 ft. by 4 ft. The outside dimensions would be about 12 ft. by 25 ft. in plan and the height 4 ft. Two propellers will be required about 28 in. in diameter, each to be driven by direct current motor at a maximum speed of 4500 R.P.M. Provision can be made for altering the length of certain portions, particularly the exit cone, and possibly for the application of boundary layer control in order to effect satisfactory air flow. This model can be constructed in a comparatively short time, using 2 by 4 framing with matched sheathing inside, and where circular sections are desired they can be obtained by nailing sheet metal to wooden ribs, which can be cut on the band saw. It is estimated that three months will be required for the construction and testing of such a model and that the cost will be approximately three thousand dollars, one thousand dollars of which will be for the motors. No suitable location appears to exist in any of our present buildings, and it may be necessary to build it outside and cover it with a roof.”-Elton W. Miller, 26JUN1929

The wind generators for the model of the Full Scale Wind Tunnel.

Construction jig for the cowlings that will fit around the wind tunnel’s giant diesel motors.

“The propellers are located side by side and 48 feet aft of the throat of the exit-cone bell. The propellers are 35 feet 5 inches in diameter and each consists of four cast aluminum alloy blades screwed into a cast steel hub…..   …..The most commonly used power plant for operating a wind tunnel is a direct-current motor and motor-generator set with Ward Leonard control system. For the FST it was found that alternating current slip-ring induction motors, together with satisfactory control equipment, could be purchased for approximately 30 percent less than the direct-current equipment. Two 4,000-horsepower slip-ring induction motors with 24 steps of speed between 75 and 300 r.p.m. were therefore installed. In order to obtain the range of speed one pole change was provided and the other variations are obtained by the introduction of resistance in the rotor circuit. This control permits a variation in air speed from 25 to 118 miles per hour. The two motors are connected through an automatic switchboard to one drum-type controller located in the test chamber. All the control equipment is interlocked and connected through time-limit relays, so that regardless of how fast the controller handle is moved the motors will increase in speed at regular intervals.”-Smith DeFrance, NACA TR #459 pages 294-295

The above photo shows the twin tunnel funnel with diesel motors before the giant propellers were mounted.  This ‘cone’ sucked the air out.

Entrance cone, where the air came into the wind tunnel room.

Even though the wind was generated by diesel powered props, the Full Scale Wind Tunnel still required electricity from “Two 4000-horsepower slip-ring induction motors with 24 steps of speed between 75 and 300 r.p.m….”

The completed building housing the Full Scale Wind Tunnel, also known as the 30×60 Tunnel: “The entire equipment is housed in a structure, the outside walls of which serve as the outer walls of the return passages. The over-all length of the tunnel is 434 feet 6 inches, the width 222 feet, and the maximum height 97 feet. The framework is of structural steel….”-NACA TR #459 pages 292-293

In 1999, NASA (National Aeronautics Space Administration) decided to test a 1:1 scale model of the Wright Flyer, for aerodynamic data. However, the full-scale Wright Flyer was built stronger than the original for fear it wouldn’t hold up in the wind tunnel (it was tested at only 30mph/48kmh).

Despite being declared a National Historic Landmark, demolition of the 30×60 Full Scale Wind Tunnel began in 2010, officially declared dead and buried in 2014.

CoViD Oddities-5: “THERE’S NO WAY THEY’RE GOING TO ARREST ME, THIS IS INSANE!”

Ingenious or desperate?

A big water/fuel tank turned into a boat. Intercepted in 1999.

For more than five decades Cubans who don’t like living on their island country have sailed, some even tried swimming, to the United States.  This is partly because the U.S. Cuban Adjustment Act (CAA) of 1966 ‘fast tracks’ citizenship for any Cuban who can make it to U.S. territory.

U.S. policy is to sink all intercepted migrant boats.

Looks like simple 2×4 construction. Intercepted in 2016.

Even since the year 2000, Cubans still come up with ingenious, or maybe desperate, ways of getting to the United States.

Not sure what this is. Intercepted in 2016.

Wood planks strapped to 55 gallon drums. Intercepted in 2015.

My favorite. A 1951 Chevy truck mounted on empty 55 gallon drums.  The riders actually attempted to drive it to the U.S.  The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted the boat-truck in July 2003.

The truck-boat plugged along at eight miles per hour and made it just 40 miles from U.S. shores before sinking.

You might have seen one driving around Miami, but it’s not the one that sank.  A Florida Chevy dealer was so inspired by the effort of the Cubans that he made a much better-working replica.  As of May 2019, the dealer was trying to sell it for just under $40-thousand!

But wait!  In 2004 two Cuban families tried to drive to Florida in their 1959 Buick.  The families had tried to do the same thing in the 1990s but their Buick developed electrical problems and they turned back. The U.S. Coast Guard ended their 2004 attempt, catching them before they could reach the shore, sending them back to Cuba, and their classic car to the bottom of the ocean.

But two failed attempts didn’t stop the people in the Buick, they tried again in 2005, this time in a floating 1948 Mercury stretched taxi.

As is U.S. Coast Guard policy, and despite the boat being a classic car, the Cuban taxi-raft was sunk.

FEMA photo by K.C. Wilsey.

New York gov’na Cuomo continues to whine about how the world isn’t paying enough attention to his state. This FEMA pic was taken on 03APR2020, it shows a woman trying to shove stacks of newly delivered N95 masks through a doorway at Bellevue Hospital (NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue)! The masks were delivered by FEMA.

The U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine advised President Trump that just breathing and talking will spread CoViD-19 (as I wrote in CoViD-19, AIRMOBILE!: WHY MASKS, COVERING YOUR MOUTH AND HAND WASHING WILL NOT PROTECT YOU).  Also, epidemiologists still don’t know how CoViD-19 infects you.

ScienceNews: Just breathing or talking may be enough to spread COVID-19 after all

Some people might think that’s proof everybody needs to wear a mask, but not so fast.

In this pic taken on 19MAR2020, note that this Pennsylvania National Guard personnel, activated for CoViD response, is using a mask designed for biological warfare!

The latest reports out of East Asia suggest that CoViD-19 is air-mobile, as I’ve written before, when you breath it out it’s officially in a bioaerosol form.  The pathogen can spread in the air up to six feet and hang there for long enough that people passing through the air space to breath it in!  Air-mobile particles are extremely tiny and cannot be stopped by the simple cloth masks that everybody is being told to make, only the N95 masks can stop it.

However, in 2006 it was revealed that several U.S. government entities experimented with homemade cloth masks to fight what was perceived as a future catastrophic H5N1 influenza pandemic. The result was that basically one piece of cloth will not protect you, but the researchers did find a somewhat acceptable expedient solution, more at the end of this article.

It is a logistical impossibility to make enough N95 masks for every person in a given country to wear, allowing for a new mask everyday because the masks are useless after a day’s use, and then to provide a biological hazardous waste disposal system to handle all the used masks.

Yes, after a day of use the N95 will be technically considered a bio-hazard that must be disposed of with other bio-hazardous medical waste.  Imagine that on top of providing every healthcare worker with N95 masks you then have to provide new N95 masks for every resident, then an at least once per week a collection service for all those used N95 masks, for a country the size of the United States!  This might be the real reason governments are so hesitant to order the wearing of N95 masks by every resident.

Many people have taken to the internet to find out if they can wash N95 masks, the answer is no.  The U.S. CDC says throw them away.  Also, studies show that washing the N95 masks renders it ineffective.

N95 masks are made with petroleum based polypropylene fibers that are also treated with an electrostatic charge to attract and hold microbes, which is actually what makes them effective against microbes.  Washing the masks will remove the electrostatic charge.  The electrostatic charge has a lifespan which is why the masks have expiration dates.  Once removed from the packaging the electrostatic charge wears-off quickly, which is why you must use them only for that day.

Now for the government tested experimental field-expedient cloth mask.

In the pic note how many layers of 100% heavyweight (nothing less than true heavyweight, like what you’d get with a t-shirt made for construction workers) cotton is used, and how each layer is placed so the ‘grain’ of the fabric crosses the other.  One or two pieces of light weight cloth will not work.   The multiple layer t-shirt mask was tested against an N95, the conclusion was that “Although insufficient for the workplace, this mask offered substantial protection from the challenge aerosol and showed good fit with minimal leakage….      We do not advocate use of this respirator in place of a properly fitted commercial respirator..….         … When made by naive users, this mask may be less effective because of variations in material, assembly, facial structure, cultural practices, and handling. ”
