On 24NOV2021, the U.S. Coast Guard captured approximately 400-kilograms of cocaine, along with four smugglers, near Dorado.  The smugglers are from the Dominican Republic, and are now facing U.S. federal charges in Puerto Rico.

TEXAS: Laredo Sector Border Patrol captured more than 80 illegals, found in a ‘stash house’. They are from the countries of Honduras, Belize, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico. However, a different report says some of those captured are actually from Belize. 

Laredo Sector Border Patrol also reporting the use of vacuum sealed tanker trucks to smuggle humans. Two trucks with 70 illegals were captured.  The illegals are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. The drivers of the trucks are U.S. citizens!

Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol captured dozens of illegals who are not only known violent gang members, but one of them had been deported five times, and another apparently should have been in prison serving a 14 sentence!

The Del Rio crossing again getting hit by illegals from more than 50 countries, such as Eritrea, Lebanon, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan!

Cold War Subs: USS Nautilus (SSN-571), still fighting after 67 years! First born in land-locked Idaho?

After 67 years, the world’s first nuclear powered submarine is still afloat, and heading for a $36-million (estimated) refurbishment, so it can continue its job as the U.S. Submarine Force Museum’s centerpiece.

Former USS Nautilus, now HS Nautilus, is the only nuclear powered submarine that silly-vilians (civilians) are allowed to visit (?unless you count the prototype Nautilus buried in the Idaho desert? see more below).

Officials with the Submarine Force Museum claim that more than 100-thousand people tour the retired trend-setting submarine every year.

Nautilus developed a hull vibration that rendered its sonar useless, It was decommissioned and stricken from active duty records on 03MAR1980.

10NOV1966 collision with USS Essex (CV-9)! The conning tower (aka sail) of Nautilus came into contact with the hull of the carrier Essex during anti-submarine war games off the North Carolina coast.

Essex was refueling when Nautilus, which was playing the ‘bad guy’, decided to make an attack run on Essex.  Both ships suffered damage and had to return to their home ports for repairs.  One person was wounded on Nautilus (a broken arm?), reportedly nobody was hurt or killed on Essex.

First submarine under the North Pole ice cap (yep, there used to be a year-round ice sheet on the Arctic Ocean), it should be pointed out that compasses do not work once you get into the Arctic Circle. This is silent, USN color film (which looks like there should be audio because the Captain is talking to the camera), Captain congratulating crew upon reaching ’90 degrees North’ (notice the cake), and writing his official letter to the President of the U.S., during the secret mission called Operation Sunshine, August 1958:

The General Dynamics-Electric Boat built Nautilus was christened/launched on 21JAN1954, commissioned as a United States Ship (USS) on 30SEP1954, first sailing under nuclear power in January 1955 making it the world’s first SSN (Submersible Ship Nuclear).

The S2W nuclear powerplant for Nautilus was born in the Arco Desert of Eastern Idaho, in 1953, on a USN base then known as the National Reactor Testing Station (now known as Idaho National Laboratory).

The prototype S1W Reactor (aka Submarine Thermal Reactor) remained in use in the Eastern Idaho desert until 1989, training sailors to operate nuclear powerplants on ships. While the reactor was built in a section of submarine hull, the Navy did not build an entire Nautilus sub and then bury it in the Arco Desert (!that would’ve been too cool if they did, but there are the remains of the nuclear powerplant of a nuclear powered bomber out there!).

Pandemic Logistics Perfidy: Skyrocketing Used Car Prices & Insurance Rates started years before the shortages!

I recently got a notice from the car insurance company I use (which is the cheapest I could find) and it stated that my eleven years old used car (I’m the second owner) is now “undervalued” and to meet its new valuation would require an increase to my insurance rate.

I have not been able to afford a new car since 1990, not just because of my income, but because of outrageous insurance rates for new vehicles (Anybody in the U.S. as old as me should remember when industry and government officials promised that making vehicle insurance mandatory would make it cheaper!).  The news media wants you to believe that used vehicle prices are skyrocketing because of Pandemic shortages affecting the new vehicle manufacturers, my research shows used car prices started going up years before the Pandemic hit, and insurance rates are more about the switch to artificial intelligence than consumer ‘demand’.

An article published today, by The New Yorker, refers to insurance company Hagerty as reporting that second-hand pickup truck prices have gone up by 50% over the last four years.  This is partly because people in the United States can actually make money ‘flipping’ a used pickup truck.  Another reason is that old pickup trucks are seen as being easier for the owner to work on, compared to new vehicles which almost require you to take them to an expensive mechanic (some countries, like Germany, made it illegal for you to work on your own vehicle, unless you become a government licensed mechanic with a government inspected shop).  This might seem logical for people with limited money who can’t afford to pay a mechanic, but the article makes an ironic point by blaming high-paid computer savvy tech workers for driving the demand for used pickups precisely because they don’t like the new computerized pickups!

This leads to an article by Forbes, which reports that the actual cause of automotive supply problems is not the Pandemic, but a mandated shift towards electric vehicle production! This will affect the economies of the world as the automotive industry is a truly globalized industry and not every link in the supply chain will benefit: “Companies making the wrong things will lose ground to those making the right things. Manufacturing jobs held by some people will go away. Manufacturing and software jobs will open up for others, possibly in the same locations, possibly in neighboring states, possibly in other countries.”

Another article published today reports on a relatively new U.S. insurance company that just acquired another relatively new U.S. insurance company, and how it just reported massive losses. The article doesn’t blame increased accidents involving used cars, but increased spending by the company on artificial intelligence (A-I) and other hi-tech software crap, as well as massive spending on advertising campaigns (marketing).

In the U.S. the car price ‘god’ is known as Kelly Blue Book, just this month they tried to explain why insurance rates are going up, basically insurance companies are now using ‘third-party’ A-I contractors to determine repair/replacement costs and set rates.

Today, Seeking Alpha tried to dissect the performance of an ecommerce used car seller called Shift Technologies, while used vehicle sales were way up, the company also reported a $14-million year-over-year net loss! The company had focused on selling its oldest vehicles for high prices in its first three quarters, but then reduced purchases because Shift expects used car prices to come down in its fourth quarter!

A recent article by Money says not only have used vehicle prices gone up, so have new car prices.  The vehicle manufacturers are using the excuse of a so called microchip shortage to focus only on producing vehicles that make big profits.

In the United Kingdom, a recent article somehow connects the rising number of used car purchases to the rising number of accidents, at least that’s what one insurance company is claiming in order to justify jacking-up insurance rates. What the U.K.’s biggest vehicle insurance company claims is that when a used car gets into an accident it is most likely written-off, or what we call in the U.S. being totaled, due to the cost of repairs exceeding the value of the vehicle. Apparently a vehicle write-off is more expensive in the U.K. than in the U.S.? The insurance company also states that they’ve gone ahead and repaired some crashed vehicles, rather than write them off, because it was actually cheaper to do so. However, the Association of British Insurers claims that overall vehicle insurance rates have actually gone down precisely because there are fewer people driving due to Pandemic lockdowns!

In Wales, the news media claims that second hand car sales hit 19 straight months of booming sales in October, however, a car sales ‘expert’ reported that the Pandemic lockdowns of 2020 caused “1.5 million ‘lost’ car sales”!

Even in South Africa, the insurance industry is using Pandemic shortages to justify jacking-up vehicle insurance rates, claiming that Pandemic shortages are jacking-up the cost of labor and parts to repair a car.

Cold War ‘Fake News’ Armor: When is an M551 not a Sheridan? When it’s a ZSU-23-4!

The U.S. Army began reducing its inventory of M551 Sheridans in 1978, remaining Sheridans were relegated to the role of ‘bad guy’ for war games, being modified to look like various types of Soviet tanks for use on the U.S. Army’s then new National Training Center, in the early 1980s.

I remember when I was part of the 1st/185th Armor, CSC Company (armory in Apple Valley, later becoming Delta Company) of the California Army National Guard, we routinely used Fort Irwin for weekend drills. In the early 1980s, NTC was literally a dust bowl with almost no facilities, we used the giant boulders as our targets for live-fire tank gunnery. Finally, in 2003/2004 the M551 was retired from the OpFor (Opposition Forces) role, with the very last Sheridan seen being hauled to the U.S. Navy’s China Lake in March 2004 (probably to be used as a target).

In the last decade of the use of Sheridans as ‘Krasnovian’ OpFor vehicles, the M551s were kept alive by cannibalizing parts from other M551s, and the unusable parts were sold as scrap.  My last encounter with the Krasnovians was in 1998, with the Idaho Army National Guard.

Off the coastline of Jupiter, on 16NOV2021 the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) captured/found a man reported missing.  The USCG suspects the man of trying to smuggle his non-citizen stepson into the U.S.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753) off-loaded $504-million in cocaine, marijuana at Port Everglades, on 22NOV2021.  The drugs were captured as part of an international effort involving USCG, U.S. Navy, Customs and Border Protection, FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with allied and international partner agencies.

IDAHO: In direct opposition to Biden’s own talk of clamping down on polluters in order to save the climate, and despite efforts by Idaho organizations to block the operation, the Biden administration has given the green light to a Canadian gold mining company to begin digging in Caribou-Targhee National Forest in Eastern Idaho!  To add insult to injury, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest has recently been going after economically disaffected (homeless) people living in the forest!

In the legalized marijuana state, an “epic” illegal marijuana operation was busted. The illegal operation relied on trafficked labor from south of the border to make it work. State Police say they captured half-a-million pounds of illegal marijuana plants!

Cold War Armor: M551 Sheridan, propaganda border guard

The M551 Sheridan was not considered a main battle tank, it was officially a Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle, beginning service with the U.S. Army in 1967.

Made out of mostly aluminum (the outer hull was ‘high density foam’ encased in aluminum), it was meant to be air droppable and amphibious.

The 152mm main gun could fire low velocity HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) or ‘canister’ rounds, or the Shillelagh anti-tank guided-missile. The low velocity rounds were useless against fast moving and distant enemy tanks, and by the 1970s the U.S. Army had newer and better anti-tank missiles, so the Sheridan got relegated to other jobs like playing the bad guy in war games, or posing for propaganda photos.

The U.S. Army began reducing its inventory of M551s in 1978, retiring it from front line use in 1996. Remaining Sheridans were relegated to the role of bad guy for war games, being modified to look like various types of Soviet tanks.  Finally, in 2003 it was retired from the OpFor (Opposition Forces) role.

Before the U.S. Army could get its hands on a real Mil 24 Hind-D, it had to ‘fake it’ using the old UH-1H (improved D model) Iroquois (Huey).  The Huey-Hind was also known as the JUH-1 Sokol (not to be confused with the JUH-1H SOTAS [Stand Off Target Acquisition System]).

UH-1 Iroquois operations over Fort Irwin, California, began in 1980.  Most of the Hueys were used for their usual purpose, troop transport.  In December 2011, the last of the Hueys, including a former fake-news UH-1H Huey-Hind, were officially retired.  Less than a handful were transferred to the U.S. Air Force.

Cold War Boats: Fiberglass & Wood, USS Avenger (MCM-1), Keel Laying to Commissioning.

United States Ship Avenger (MCM-1) was the lead ship in a class of ‘mine sweepers’, the MCM stood for Mine Counter-Measure.  Built and launched at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, construction began 03JUN1983, commissioned on 12SEP1987.

A total of 14 MCMs were built between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Apparently, as of 2021 there are still eight in operation; Chief, Devastator, Dexterous, Gladiator, Patriot, Pioneer, Sentry, and Warrior.

The Avenger class mine-sweepers are fiberglass-sheathed, wooden-hull ships, using sonar and video systems to identify mines, deploy a mine-detonating device to remotely explode mines, and can also conduct what is considered ‘conventional’ minesweeping activities.

USS Avenger was decommissioned on 30SEP2014.  It is now in Reserve status for the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The U.S. Navy (USN) plans to replace the remaining MCMs with Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).  However, on 28MAY2021, the USN reported that President Biden’s 2022 budget request is complicating the LCS effort.

On 26JUL2021, the USN’s Mine Countermeasures Squadron-7 (based in Japan) reported they had conducted ‘intense availabilities’ (USN talk for major overhaul) on USS Warrior (MCM 10), USS Chief (MCM 14) and USS Pioneer (MCM 9), at a cost of “more than $31.4 million” (I’m assuming that is for all three ships, the report didn’t specify. If that is so that is way cheap compared to the cost of one new build ship.).  The overhaul of the three Avenger class ships included maintenance on the main reduction gears, diesel generators, diesel engines, and rudders. Additionally, the shafting was removed and re-insulated on all three platforms.

The UH-1N ‘Twin Huey’ is an evolution of the UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed Huey).  The UH-1 first flew in 1956, while its descendant first flew in 1969.

In 2021, a UH-1N still operated by the United States Air Force’s (USAF) 54th Helicopter Squadron ‘Rough Riders’ got a new paint job in an old scheme known as South East Asia, or SEA.  UH-1N #23 (623) began its USAF career in 1970, was based on Minot Air Force Base (AFB) even before the B-52s, and is still in service!

What the Major in the video failed to explain was that tail # 23 (623) was the first UH-1N to go through the U.S. Navy’s (USN) Fleet Readiness Center East’s ‘Kingston location’ at Cherry Point, North Carolina, however, the USN did not make this information public until 24SEP2021.  The depot level maintenance began in March 2021, the USN boasts that the work was completed 40 days sooner than if the USAF Twin Huey had been sent to the ‘primary facility’ on U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
