Locust Plague 2021: Fat Hopper, and the ghost of its former self

The fattest grasshopper I’ve seen in the 25 years I’ve lived in Southeastern Idaho was trying to get in my back door.

The official 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season has begun, and the U.S. state of Georgia warmed-up the latest in emergency field kitchen technologies.

It’s known as Disaster Relief Mobilized Kitchen Trailer (DRMKT).  It was set up by the Georgia Air National Guard (ANG) on Robins Air Force Base (AFB), 10JUL2021.

In December 2020, North Carolina’s ANG got a brand new DRMKT: “We developed the Disaster Relief Mobile Kitchen Trailer to solve many of the inefficiencies we observed in our Nation’s response to Hurricane Katrina.”-Bill Hague, Babington Technology

In October 2020, Idaho’s 124th Fighter Wing conducted maintenance on their DRKMT: “This equipment is unique to the Air National Guard because, unlike active duty Air Force, part of our mission is to support local natural disasters.”-Technical Sergeant Audenne Valdez, Idaho ANG

Georgia ANG has already deployed their DRMKT, in October 2018.   It was sent to the town of Colquitt, where victims of Hurricane Michael were fed hot meals.

In August 2017, the Illinois and Idaho ANGs deployed their DRMKTs to the Crow Reservation in Montana.  Over several weeks, the Illinois and Idaho ANGs fed Montana Guard personnel working to build new housing on the Crow Reservation: “You can do just about anything you can do on base in this kitchen. We’ve got two full ovens, flattop grill, a stockpot station, a three-compartment sink and then a tray ration heater which can also double as making pasta or boiling water, or whatever else you need it for.”-Staff Sergeant Christopher Leigh, Montana ANG

The first use of DRMKTs during a real disaster was in 2017.  Members of Ohio and Minnesota Air National Guard units deployed, with their DRMKTs, to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

National Guard units using the DRMKT after Hurricane Maria claimed they could serve 8-hundred meals per day.  If there are a mass of people to feed then up to 1-thousand meals per 90 minutes can be achieved, but only by using ‘boil-in-bag’ meals (basically MREs).

In January 2017, Air National Guard units from across the U.S. converged their DRMKTs on FedEx Field, Washington DC, to feed security personnel during the Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump.

The Georgia ANG first received their DRMKT back in February 2015, delivered via C-130 cargo plane.

Georgia ANG tested the new DRMKT by feeding hungry Robins AFB flightline workers barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw and rolls.

In August 2014, a DRMKT was delivered to the Ohio Air National Guard  (FEMA Region 5) via C-130 transport aircraft: “The State of Ohio was selected to receive the Disaster Response Mobile Kitchen Trailer due to geographical location within FEMA Region 5, and state leadership selected the 179th Airlift Wing for this mission due to the C-130 cargo planes capability to transport the asset.”-Senior Master Sergeant Dana Togliatti

DRMKTs were developed in 2012 (called Mobile Kitchens by Babington Technology), to give National Guard units a faster response time in getting cooked meals to survivors of disasters.  Washington DC ANG video report, by Master Sergeant Gareth Buckland, unveiling of DRMKT:

DRMKTs use Babington Airtronic Burners which can use almost any type of liquid fuel.

The DRMKT has ‘frigerators, uses fans for ventilation and to keep flying insects out, all computer controlled, and thanks to liquid fuel burning cooking units the DRMKT uses only 2-thousand watts total.

Towards the end of May 2021, the Idaho Air National Guard unveiled their heritage ‘8N’ A-10C Thunderbolt-2.  8N is the squadron code for the U.S. Army 9th Air Force-371st Fighter Group’s 405th Fighter Squadron.

It was part of 75th anniversary celebrations for the 190th Fighter Squadron’s(FS) birthday, 24MAY1946.  The old 405th FS logo was added to the nacelles after returning from its heritage paint job in Iowa.

The 190th FS evolved out of the 405th FS, which flew P-47 Thunderbolts during World War Two (hence the false tail number 405190). In 1944, P-47s of the 405th carried the code 8N on their fuselages: “Every aspect of that paint job, down to the smallest detail, is deliberate and faithful to how our P-47’s looked in the summer of 1944. We weren’t going for glitz and a superficial ‘wow factor.’ This isn’t a toy airplane; it’s one of our beautiful A-10 Thunderbolt-2s dressed in the same scheme worn by our P-47 Thunderbolts in World War Two. It’s like a little boy wearing his dad’s military uniform. I think that’s what makes it so special.”-Major Tom Silkowski, Idaho’s 190th FS

On 07JUL2021, 8N took part in refuel training over Mountain Home Air Force Base (AFB), Idaho.

The refueling was done by a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 507th Air Refueling Wing (ARW), Tinker AFB, out of Oklahoma.

But it is not the first time 8N got refueled mid-flight.  On its way home from the heritage paint job (done at the Air National Guard Paint Facility in Sioux City), the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th ARW provided fuel for the flight back to Idaho.

When I first moved to Southeastern Idaho (25 years ago), I experienced one of the cyclical swarming of grasshoppers in the region.  When grasshoppers swarm and eat everything in site they are called Locust.

Not only was my garden in my yard being inundated with plant eating grasshoppers, but while hiking in the Scout Mountain area I observed tens of thousands of grasshoppers cannibalizing each other.  In an open field the ground was undulating, upon closer inspection it was a carpet of grasshoppers doing battle, biting each other’s heads off and then eating the loser (and I they were bleeding red blood)!

That was back in the late 1990s, today there is a new problem; grasshoppers (which can fly) and Mormon Crickets (which cannot fly) have joined forces by seemingly syncing their once individual swarm cycles, and it could have everything to do with the decades long drought in the Western United States (U.S.).

Another possible reason is that it was recently discovered that Utah state Department of Agriculture employees ‘mishandled’ federal grant funding that was intended for use in insect control programs, instead spending the money on transportation expenses!

The situation is so threatening to U.S. farming operations that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is spending $2.8-million in tax funding to suppress the new ‘Locust’.  While this situation might be new to most of us, agriculture officials have been warning since 2003 of the coming Mormon Cricket storm.

A fire began today on June 14th, 2021, this afternoon around 15:30, according to Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center. Deputies are asking residents to evacuate.

This is as far as anyone was allowed to drive, the Sho-Ban Fire Department was asking everyone to turn around. They were also visiting residences. Below is some footage of the fire as we drove away. About halfway in you can see the Fire Department vehicles. (Which oddly smelled like gasoline…)

Hawgsmoke 2021 was held at Moody Air Force Base (AFB) in Georgia, from April 14th to the 17th.  More than 150 personnel from 13 A-10C units took part in the secretive competition: “You don’t know what the events are until about 10 minutes before takeoff. They might give you general idea of what to prepare for, but you never know until you are sitting in the cockpit.”-Lieutenant Colonel Jason Cobb, 190th Fighter Squadron, Idaho Air National Guard

Here’s a really dangerous part of aircraft operations, uploading liquid oxygen for the pilot can breath. An Indiana Air National Guard Airman fills the LOX (Liquid OXygen) bottle on one of his unit’s A-10s, at Hawgsmoke 2021.

Some of the private donors (yes, Hawgsmoke is partly funded by private donations!), and other ‘distinguished visitors’, got a tour of Hawgsmoke 2021.  Hawgsmoke is a resurrection of the old Gunsmoke competition over Nellis AFB, in Nevada.  Despite military press writers, and even military personnel, constantly using the wrong word to describe when Hawgsmoke happens, it is a biennial event (not biannual, meaning twice per year), taking place every other year.  Biennial and biannual are pronounced differently, so I don’t know why personnel are constantly saying biannual for an every other year event.

The Idaho Air National Guard has hosted Hawgsmoke in 2008 and 2010, and will host the Hawgsmoke competition in 2023.  It would be launched from Gowen Field, and conducted over the Orchard Combat Training Area.

Not one of the so-called CoViD vaccines in use in the United States have been approved as a vaccine under the USFDA!  All the propaganda by government officials and main-stream news media is hyperbole, the USFDA has only “authorized for emergency use only”, which is technically and legally not the same as ‘approving’ as a vaccine, mainly because the ‘experimental medical technologies’ did not go through the more intensive testing required for a true approved vaccine!

Pandemic Logistics Shenanigans: Canned Pet Food? Conspiracy to jack-up prices? Blame China?

A recent visit to the Pocatello, Idaho, Fred Meyer revealed that not only are they still out of cat litter, but now they are out of canned cat food!  Notice the blue stickers all over the shelf fronts, they say “Sorry for the inconvenience”.

Across the street at Winco, they are still low on the top selling cat litters, but are also showing fewer stock of canned cat and dog food.  Fred Meyer is also showing a declining stock of canned dog food, but they’re not out of stock, yet.

It doesn’t help that in the past month several brands of pet food, in the U.S., were recalled due to salmonella.

A quick check of the inter-web and I discovered that shortages of pet food is making way more international news than shortages of cat litter, and this time most of the international news media isn’t blaming the pandemic (except for a Fox TV station and other news outlets in New York).

I also checked for news regarding the logistics industry.

An interesting report out of India revealed that several India airline companies are now contracting to be CoViD-19 oxygen and vaccine cargo haulers in Hong Kong, India and for “private entities” in the United States.  Also, Singapore government-owned Temasek has partnered with Air India and Amazon to airlift oxygen concentrators.

The fact that so many shipping companies are shifting to more profitable CoViD operations can only negatively affect the supplies of everything else.

Siddharth Jain of Inox Air Products, revealed in a recent interview why the current craze of shipping liquid oxygen to CoViD hospitals is screwing up the supply chain, at least in India: “….this has never been done anywhere in the world. Liquid oxygen is not designed to travel thousands of kilometers. Usually, plants are set up where there is a requirement…” 

In New Zealand, University of Auckland Centre for Supply Chain Management director Tava Olsen said supply chains were supposed to flow smoothly like water, but the whole chain had become ‘lumpy’….blames it partly on China.

Covenant Logistics Group just revealed they’ve been restructuring their operations, and admitted that “…supply chain disruptions, and an intensifying national driver shortage, all of which have continued into the second quarter.”

Crain’s New York Business interviewed an ‘expert’ who stated that the pandemic shift to more e-commerce revealed that there is not enough warehouses (believe it or not) dedicated to stocking merchandise for e-commerce sales.  The expert also said the logistics industry is ramping up its use of A-I and robots.

A new article by Logistics Manager says the advent of the pandemic, Brexit, China trade problems, and the recent blockage of the Suez Canal, revealed that the shift to a logistical system operated more with A-I and robots, and less humans, doesn’t work!  It also agrees with the Crain’s New York Business ‘expert’ who says there just aren’t enough warehouses to support the new logistics system.

At the end of last year the Pocatello, Idaho, Fred Meyer began operating as a ‘fulfilment’ center for their e-commerce and pandemic ‘pick-up’ sales.  The brick-n-mortar store is now serving double duty as an e-commerce warehouse, but that doesn’t mean they’re carrying more stock.

I’ve written several times in the past that the so-called pandemic panic attack buying is actually a major problem with the globalized supply system, in which bigger logistics companies were taking over and shutting down smaller competitors, and switching to a new A-I system with robot workers instead of humans, just before the pandemic hit.
