What Economic Recovery? U.S. unemployment much higher than officially reported, Corporate America needs to create 500,000 jobs EVERY month

The official U.S. unemployment rate is currently 9.1%, but that does not count those unemployed who dropped off the official lists, or those who are discouraged job seekers.

Fadhel Kaboub, an economics professor at Denison University in Ohio, says when you take into account people who are no longer counted by official sources, the actual unemployment rate is 17%.

The U.S. Department of Labor said 14 million people are officially unemployed, but Kaboub believes it’s actually 20-23 million.

He said the reason the stock markets reacted badly to the May job creation numbers, is because the only way there can be a recovery is if Corporate America creates 500,000 new jobs every month.  That has yet to happen, and as demonstrated by the May numbers, jobs creation is actually going down.

Government Incompetence: Japanese government will NOW test soil for radiation

According to NHK(Nippon Housou Kyoukai/Japan Broadcasting Corporation), there has not been any official soil sampling since the nuclear disasters following the 11 March 2011 quake/tsunami.  Tokyo Electric Power Company has done periodic samples, but only within the area of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear compound.

The Japanese Science Ministry is now taking actual soil samples outside the nuclear facility.  What I mean by ‘actual’ is that up ’till now they’ve been conducting soil samples from the air!  NHK didn’t explain how you do soil sampling from the air, but it’s clear the government has realized they need to actually get down on the ground to properly test the soil.

The Science Ministry will join with universities and private laboratories around Japan, to do the soil sampling.  Samples will be taken every 4 square km (2.4 miles) in areas within 80 km (49.7 miles) of the nuclear plant and every 100 square km (62 miles) in areas further away.

Japanese University Students find Plutonium!

University students, concerned with the fact that there is no official government soil testing around the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuke plant, took some samples of their own.

They found plutonium-239 and 240, making up a total of 0.078 becquerels per kilogram.  The samples were taken on 21 April 2011.  Immediately after they took the samples the Japanese government declared the area an evacuation zone.

What Economic Recovery? Mazda will stop U.S. production, moving to Japan & Mexico

Mazda announced that it will stop production of its Mazda6, at a Ford plant in Michigan.  Mazda will move production of the Mazda6 back to Japan.

The Michigan plant is a joint venture between Ford and Mazda, known as AutoAlliance International.  The joint venture has been losing money ever since the ‘credit crisis’.

Mazda also plans to build cars in Mexico, mainly for the booming Latin American car market.  Some Mexican built Mazdas will be sold in the United States.  Rumors are that Mazda wants out of its joint venture with Ford.

War on Drugs officially a failure

“Political leaders and public figures should have the courage to articulate publicly what many of them acknowledge privately: that the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won.”-Drug Policy report

The Global Commission on Drug Policy has declared the War on Drugs a failure.  The 19 member commission includes former U.S. Secretary of State George Schultz, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.

Anti drug policies are to blame for the failure, especially in the United States.  The report points out that while huge efforts are made to stop drug trafficking, most people who end up in prison are the users of drugs, not the sellers.  The report said studies show that users “do no harm to others.”  So why is so much time and money being spent to put them in jail?

The Global Commission on Drug Policy wants anti-drug policies to focus on health and human rights issues, and even consider making some illegal drugs legal.

Don’t Eat Radioactive Snow!

Researchers in Japan have discovered that snow on mountains near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant are contaminated with cesium.

Meteorology students from Fukushima University took 31 samples of snow.  14 samples showed high levels of cesium.  The average level of contamination exceeds the safe limit of 200 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium.  One sample, taken at 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) has 3000 becquerels of cesium.

Fukushima University Vice-President Watanabe Akira says the research shows that large amounts of cesium is spewing into the air.

Idaho’s Mike Simpson says “reforming” Medicare will get GOP “beat up” in elections, but it’s worth it

U.S. Congressman Mike Simpson, from Idaho’s 2nd District, admitted that the Republican party will get beat up in future elections, for Medicare reforms: “We knew that the first person that threw something on the table was going to get the living crap beat out of them, we might be beat up in the elections in the future.  But you got to be willing to take that if you want to reform the system.”

Simpson is supporting House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s reform bill, which would replace Medicare with federal subsidies to buy private health insurance.  I know people who got tricked into switching to privately run Medicare programs (private insurance) and they regret it.  Even the AARP is against it.

When Simpson says the GOP will be beat up in future elections, because of their Medicare reforms, who does he think will be doing the beating?  The voters of course!  So in a round about way Simpson is admitting that Republicans are not doing what the voters want!

Who the Government works for: GM & Chrysler excused from paying vicitms of car defects

The recent bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, did not just include money, it included legal liability for defective vehicles that caused injuries and deaths.

The bailout allowed GM and Chrysler to skip paying any court ordered settlements for injuries or deaths that happened before the auto makers went  bankrupt.  GM had 2,500 claims against it when they went bankrupt.  The excused settlements are in the tens of millions of dollars.

In the words of Telly Savalis: “Who loves ya baby?”  It’s not your government that’s for sure.

TEPCo admits Fukushima Daiichi can not be stabilized!

Reports saying Tokyo Electric Power Company now saying it is likely the damaged reactors at Fukushima Daiichi will not be stabilized by the end of the year, as first hoped.

Problems range from TEPCo’s own faulty assessments, to the Typhoon season now hitting Japan.

This means highly radioactive isotopes will continue to be emitted into the air, and pour into the Pacific Ocean.
