Operation Jupiter: U.S. DoD Bat research and Hemorrhagic Diseases!

In June 2018, the U.S. Department of Defense-Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) Chemical and Biological Technologies Department revealed their continued research involving bat and human and the hemorrhagic Marburg virus.

Bats can ‘clear’ the virus from their bodies, so researchers had long surmised that bats have potent antiviral defenses compared to other mammals.  However, the results of the study published in 2018 concluded that bats do not have a stronger immune system, than other animals!

The study was published under the title of The Egyptian Rousette Genome Reveals Unexpected Features of Bat Antiviral Immunity.  Scientists did discover that fruit bats can produce 22 type-I interferon omega anti-viral ‘copies’, while humans produce only one anti-viral copy, which seems to explain why bats can be infected with many killer diseases and survive.

Going Viral 2023: Tick borne disease makes jump from livestock to humans!

Scientists working in the African country of Uganda have discovered that a tick-borne hemorrhagic fever, that normally affects farm animals, has made the jump to humans!  The study, published 07JAN2023, was spurred by the death of a cattle seller.

The virus caused disease is called Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). The details are in the study titled Prevalence of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in livestock following a confirmed human case in Lyantonde district, Uganda.

Basically, the scientists are warning that sporadic cases of fatal human hemorrhagic fever in Uganda are caused by what used to be a disease that was associated with livestock.  They found antibodies to CCHF in both livestock and humans. They are asking government administrators to establish CCHF monitoring specifically around farms, and cattle/goat herding routes.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CCHF can be found on the African continent, The Middle East (South West Asia), and Central Asia.

New Disease in Africa; ‘rodent fever’ causes instant death from sudden bleed out

“We are sending a team to the affected area to verify what the actual situation is to determine our next action. So far two people have died almost as soon as they went to the hospital to be treated for what they thought was malaria: “About two months ago, a young man of 19 years came to our health center here and complained of malaria, so we treated him for malaria but suddenly, blood started coming from the nose, mouth, anus and the ears, and immediately he died.”-Dominic Brobbey, Municipal Director of Health in the Amansie West District

Officials are investigating, but suspect it is Laffa viral hemorrhagic fever.  If it’s a new disease, or even if it is Laffa viral hemorrhagic fever, it would be the first of its kind in Ghana’s recent history.
