Early Halloween, Trunk or Treat at the Mall!

While they were busy trying to setup the parking lot for the inaugural Southeast Idaho drift car event, during the evening of 04OCT2024, a handful of cars were sneaking into the Pine Ridge Mall (in Chubbuck, Idaho):

So many cars showed up last year that they had to stage cars in the adjacent Memorial Park, this year.

Summer AutoFest: Post War Pickup

1946 Chevy AK pick-em-up.  The ’46-’47 model years Chevy AK series pickup was close to the same as the ‘41-’45 Chevy AK pickup.  Basically Chevrolet just picked up where they left off when the United States was pushed into the Second World War, by Japan.

Congress declared war, and what many people don’t realize is that a declaration of war is the same as Marshal Law, which means the military (called The War Department back then) becomes the new government and the Constitution is suspended!  The War Department took over everything, including the automotive industry, and focused all aspect of life in the U.S. towards production for the military.  During the war the AK series was built mainly for the military, and some were made for farm use.

The AK series pickup was General Motors attempt to visually, and mechanically, separate their passenger cars from their trucks.  It was also sold under the GMC brand (C-series from ’41-’45, E-series from ’46-’47).  They even built bus versions, and a squished looking Cab Over Engine (COE) version.

Here’s my video:

The Chevy AK series was considered the second true pickup truck for General Motors (previous ‘trucks’ being considered coupe utilities, like a more modern El Camino).

Summer AutoFest: Climbing K10!

Almost everybody has heard of K2 (a peak associated with Mount Everest), but did you know there is a K10 (Saltoro Kangri, aka Peak 36).  The ‘K’ stands for the Karakoram Mountain Range.  Did the designers with General Motors know that when they dubbed their Chevy Squarebody the K10?

Reborn 1951 Chevy Styleline Deluxe, after surviving the fields of Lava.

The fields near Lava Hotsprings, Idaho, that is.  A married couple decided to revive the rusting hulk, because it reminded them of the car they used to go a-courtin’ in (which is why they had to get married, shhh).

Family and friends from across Eastern and Southeastern Idaho helped with the project.  The couple is no longer among us ‘living’ folk. Here’ my video:

In 2024, after some time sitting around, Ole Blue went to a new couple who has fun putting around in the early Cold War survivor.

Summer AutoFest: Death proof?

1972 Chevy Nova SS.

“This car belonged to the young man’s uncle. When the uncle passed away, it went to his brother. It sat in a shed for 40 years and the young guy wanted it so badly. Finally, the second uncle let him take it. Needless to say, after sitting so long it needed lots of help. He started with the engine compartment, putting lots of time and dollars into it. But, being a father to a young family, funds are limited. He was so thrilled to finally get it up and running and bring it to the show. He has great aspirations for this car, lots of memories of the family history and a real desire to bring it back to its original state.”-Jan Castor, Classy Car Club
