Sudden halt to CoViD-19 infections? It’s called ‘epidemic burst-fade-out’.

No, not the hair style!

“A well-behaved epidemic with build-up, peak, and fade out phases will be bell shaped….”Deciphering Global Epidemics: Analytical Approaches to the Disease Records, 1998

“A wide epidemic burst forth suddenly and swept the country in one month.”Journal of the Missouri State Medical Association, Volume 21, 1924

“Only the natural interplay of transmission factors would determine when it would fade out……     ……Once the epidemic had burst upon the population….”Agents of Apocalypse: Epidemic Disease in the Colonial Philippines, 1995

“Stochastic [random] effects may cause fade-out of an infectious disease in a population immediately after an epidemic outbreak.”WKB theory of epidemic fade-out in stochastic populations, 2009.  Note that ‘stochastic’ is a mathematical word that means ‘random’, in other words epidemiologists don’t really know why diseases suddenly stop sickening or killing people.

Epidemic burst fade-out describes the life-cycle of a new (novel) pathogen, usually a virus.   It’s normal; a big bang at the beginning with people wondering where the hell it came from, then panic as it ravages the human hosts, then suddenly, without explanation, it’s gone.

CoViD-19 is not a disease, it is a pathogen.  Disease is the result of a pathogen infecting a host (victim) when the environmental conditions favor the pathogen.

Pathogen=Bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.

For many old pathogens epidemiologists know, because of studying past disease outbreaks, what are the environmental conditions that favor those pathogens.  When you are dealing with a novel (new) pathogen there is no way to know the perfect environmental conditions for it to strike, because there is no way to know that a novel pathogen exists.  But even more amazing is that epidemiologists don’t understand why pathogens suddenly halt their disease causing rampages: “Some key outstanding questions remain unanswered, but we may discover the answers within the scope of current research studies. With those answers, we’ll not only inform disease prevention and control strategies, but we’ll also be able to shed light on our basic understanding of organismal evolution.”-Sarah McDonald, Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute

One important environmental factor that humans should be able to control (but don’t) is the level of physical and mental stress a potential host is experiencing.  Disease outbreaks (burst) hit the big cities/metro areas first and hardest.  So many people living so close together is enough to push the stress levels sky-high.  Stress is not just negative, there is such a thing as positive stress.  Anything that pushes your emotional system to a negative or positive extreme is stress.  Many extroverted people love the big cities because of the physical closeness to other people, but pathogens also love the metro-closeness of humans.   Metro areas are giant petri dishes creating the perfect environment for a pathogen to burst forth.  (don’t forget that ever since the stress inducing Industrial Revolution there’s been a rapid acceleration of pathogens, also see The effects of industrialisation – Causes of illness and disease)

Perhaps staying calm, not getting excited or upset, is the best defense against pathogens.  Like they said in the movie Airplane:

Arrogant humans think they are the ones who make diseases go away, through vaccines, treatments, social distancing, godly cleanliness, isolationism, as demonstrated by these news media articles:

Images of B-57B and WB-57F via NASA, USAF and USMC.

This NASA B-57B was used to test the jet engine ‘mufflers’ (aka Hush Kits, officially Exhaust Noise Suppressors) that would be used on 1960s-early ’70s jet airliners.  Dryden, Edwards AFB.

Wright J65-W-5 turbojets power the B-57B.

Note the tail support rod, yes, even real jet aircraft used tail supports when parked for a long time.  Also, the Hush Kits added a lot of weight to the rear of center-of-balance.

According to the information with this NASA photo the aircraft was painted in fluorescent colors, but it didn’t specify.  They probably meant Day-Glo, which is the copyrighted name of the DayGlo Color Corporation.

09DEC1971, tail code 809 is bare metal with NASA markings and a ‘V’ under the cockpit.  The V stood for Viking Mars Lander parachute test program.

11 years later, tail code 809 in the standard white with blue stripes NASA colors.  Wing tip pitots (both sides), different nose tip and pitot.  In 1982, 809 began  atmospheric research, everything from wind currents to air pollution.

809 was retired in 1987.

USAF video report about the history of the B-57:

By 2015 only three B-57s were operating, all NASA WB-57Fs.  The aircraft in the middle of the group is configured differently from the other two.  (clicking on some of the smaller pics in this post will make them bigger)

The  U.S. Air Force RB-57F was developed in the early 1960s to take air samples over enemy countries to determine if they had conducted nuclear bomb experiments.  However, that was the secret mission, the official mission of RB-57Fs was weather forecasting.  USAF RB-57Fs were plagued by engine problems and structural failures.  The engines used are Pratt & Whitney TF33-P-11A turbofans.  In 1968 RB-57Fs were re-designated WB-57F.

This WB-57F has a modified foil covered nose carrying instruments to track a 2017 solar eclipse.  Beginning in 1968 NASA began modifying WB-57Fs, code names Rivet Chip and Rivet Slice, for its specific high-altitude research.  Every year the aircraft are modified with different sensors, and even new paint schemes, for the missions scheduled for that season of research.

A NASA WB-57 takes off from the flight line of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, 21AUG2019. The aircraft was utilizing the MCAS Miramar flight line and airspace to test new communications software.

In the rear seat (Robins AFB, Georgia), Don Darrow is about to take-off on a mission to track Hurricane Joaquin, in 2015.

Spain, 2011, stop-over for routine maintenance and refueling.

01JUL1979, then astronaut candidate Kathryn D. Sullivan set an unofficial altitude record in a NASA WB-57F; 63,300 feet was reached during a four-hour flight.

Mach2 issued two versions in 1:72 scale, the USAF RB-57 and the NASA WB-57F.  They are not for beginners as they are low quality low pressure injection (short run) kits.

Airmodel made a RB-57F vacformed conversion for the old 1:72 scale Airfix or Frog Canberra kits.

DB Productions makes a vacformed and resin R/WB-57D/F conversion for 1:72 Italeri B-57B.

Photo dated 1943.

In 1978 Revell tried to compete with Monogram’s excellent 1:48 scale B-17G, by issuing a 1:48 B-17F.  Dimensionally it was about the same size as Monogram’s but lacked the awesome detailing. It’s still periodically re-issued.

In 1962, Revell issued a 1:72 scale B-17F Memphis Belle.  As a child in the early 1970s, Revell’s 1972 rebox was the first World War Two bomber kit I built.

Hasegawa issued a 1:72 Memphis Belle in 2009, however, it is not a new tooling.  It’s their old 1976 kit with new decals.

Academy’s 1:72 Memphis Belle is much nicer than the ancient Revell, and the old Hasegawa, kits.
