“Walmart won.” No more GoPro? Gas supply at record highs, demand down, yet prices in Idaho go up! : U.S. Job Losses & Closings 14 January 2016

Incomplete list of job loss announcements and shutdowns.

After only two years Qatar based news source Al Jazeera is getting the hell outta Dodge! Al Jazeera America is shutting down in April, administrators say that despite increasing numbers of viewers the suck-ass U.S. economy makes doing business in ‘Merica “no longer sustainable”!  7-hundred employees affected!

Arizona: The Prescott Valley Kmart shutting down by April.  No word on how many jobs lost, but one employee was quoted by local news as saying “Walmart won.”

California:   Four Kmarts shutting down between March and April, one in Anaheim, Chula Vista, San Mateo and Citrus Heights, a total of 407 jobs lost!  More proof high-tech is not recession resistant, San Mateo based GoPro digital cam systems announced it must eliminate at least 7% of its jobs (about 105 positions) due to holiday sales that sucked!  GoPro’s 4th quarter revenues are about $100-million USD short of what the ‘experts’ thought they would get!

Connecticut:  Fairfield based industry giant General Electric (GE) announced it is killing off 6-thousand 5-hundred jobs in Europe!  It’s the result of GE’s takeover of Alstom SA Energy.

Florida:   Sears Holdings announced the 46 years old Daytona Beach Kmart, on International Speedway Boulevard, is shutting down by mid-March, 86 jobs lost.   The Lutz Kmart shutting down by March, 62 jobs lost.  

Pokey Runway liquidating

Idaho:  In Pocatello about two years after opening, previously worn clothing seller Runway Fashion Exchange “going out of business” and liquidating everything.  Essentially a for-profit thrift store, Runway Fashion Exchange has been shutting down stores across the U.S. since 2013.   There are reports that the supply of gasoline is at record levels, and demand is down (again), yet here in eastern Idaho gas prices went up by ten cents per gallon compared to last week ($2.05 in Chubbuck/Pocatello, last week it was at $1.95).  

The decade old drought is causing taxpayers to fork out more funding for aquifer recharge projects.  Governor Otter is proposing a one time $10-million USD payment plus $2-million yearly for the Egin Lakes-Egin Bench canal near Rexburg.  Supporters of the plan complain it’s not enough money!

Illinois: Hoffman Estates based Sears Holdings announced they will shutdown up to 120 Kmart and Sears stores in 2016!

Michigan: The Sears and Auto Center in Fort Gratiot shutting down by mid-March, 48 jobs lost.

Mississippi:  The 44 years old Greenville Kmart shutting down in April, no word on job losses.

Missouri:  Noranda Aluminum joins the list of aluminum smelters cutting way back on production.  190 people at Noranda’s New Madrid ops to become unemployed by the end of the week, and another 480 employees to be let go by the start of February!

New York: In DeWitt, it’s been revealed that the owner of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Yogen Fruz shut them both down due to low sales and high operating costs.   The same owner is shutting down his Pop’s Media Cafe claiming his labor costs are now double his sales, and his rent is about to be jacked by the greedy landlord.

North Carolina: In Greensboro, ConvaTec shutting down their medical products factory and laying off 250 people by the beginning of 2017!  It’s their way of becoming more competitive in the global market.

Oklahoma: In Ponca City, Mertz Manufacturing laid off about 45 people, blaming “…continued decreased product demand from the oil and gas industry.”  SandRidge Energy announced the elimination of 226 jobs (87% of its positions) with its Lariat Services Group, due to crashing oil prices!

Ohio: Steubenville Kmart shutting down by April, 65 jobs lost. 

Pennsylvania:  In Clairton, Koppers shutting down their chemical factory, 52 jobs lost over the next six months.  The factory makes chemicals for industries that are now shutting down due to crashing commodities prices.  After 60 years Trader Horn shutting down all seven stores, 2-hundred jobs lost!  It’s blamed on the deteriorating health of the owner.

South Dakota:  The Pierre Kmart shutting down by the end of March, 45 jobs lost.  The Michell Kmart shutting down in April, 52 jobs lost.  

Tennessee:  Cleveland Kmart shutting down by mid-March, no job numbers reported.  A Memphis Sears and Auto Center (on Poplar Avenue) shutting down, 109 jobs lost!

Virginia: The Sears Hometown store in Culpeper shutting down by the end of the month.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) no longer issues mass layoff reports: “On March 1, 2013, President Obama ordered into effect the across-the- board spending cuts (commonly referred to as sequestration) required by the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act, as amended. Under the order, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) must cut its current budget by more than $30 million, 5 percent of the current 2013 appropriation, by September 30, 2013. In order to help achieve these savings and protect core programs, the BLS will eliminate two programs, including Mass Layoff Statistics, and all ‘measuring green jobs’ products. This news release is the final publication of monthly mass layoff survey data.”

Sears Kmart update 13 January 2016: More than one hundred stores to be shutdown!

Hoffman Estates based Sears Holdings announced they will shutdown up to 120 Kmart and Sears stores in 2016!

12 January 2016: Massive store shutdowns! Kroger changes its mind!

Here’s the updated list (new shutdowns in bold) of U.S. store closings that I’ve been compiling since the end of 2011:

Arizona: Scottsdale Sears/Great Indoors, Chandler Sears/Great Indoors. Recently revealed Arrowhead Towne Center Sears sold-off then rented back! Chandler Fashion Center Sears sold-off then rented back!

Alabama: Gadsden Kmart (50 jobs lost), Mobile Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Auburn Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Anniston Kmart (no word yet on how many jobs lost), Birmingham Eastwood Kmart (70 jobs lost), Decatur Mall Sears (91 jobs lost), Fort Payne Kmart, Northport Kmart (68 jobs lost), Dothan Sears (68 jobs lost), Huntsville Kmart (73 jobs lost), Sears Store and Auto Center at the Bel Air Mall in Mobile (more than 100 jobs lost).

California: Three Kmarts shutting down by April, one in Chula Vista, San Mateo and Citrus Heights, a total of 3-hundred jobs lost!   El Monte Sears (at least 40 jobs lost. Damien Arrula, El Monte’s economic development director, said the store manager had lied about what was going on: “The general manager of the store had just indicated to me that they were remodeling.”), two San Diego Sears (more than 80 jobs lost), Pleasant Hill Kmart (more than 50 jobs lost), Torrance Kmart, Fairfield Kmart (63 jobs lost), Lampert owned OSH taken over by Lowe’s home improvement in bankruptcy court, at least 17 of 99 stores to be closed down (935 jobs lost!), Rancho Cordova Kmart (97 jobs lost), San Clemente Kmart/Sears/Kmart on Camino de Estrella (58 jobs lost), placed on an official hit list in 2011 the Oceanside Kmart on College Boulevard finally being shut down, Banning Kmart (91 jobs lost) recently revealed that Sears Holdings is still paying rent on the abandoned property, Laguna Hills Mall Sears, San Diego Mid-City Kmart (73 jobs lost), Hemet Kmart (77 jobs lost), Oakland Sears repair center (75 jobs lost), San Mateo Kmart (82 jobs lost to an apartment building connected to public transportation), Hesperia Kmart building sold at a loss to a vulture capitalist REIT, no word on if the Kmart will be shutdown. Customers complain that the Kmart employees have a bad attitude, gee I wonder why? Yuba City Kmart (63 jobs lost), Rocklin Kmart (at least 63 jobs lost, the store had just posted “Now Hiring” signs), San Leandro Kmart (102 jobs lost), San Jose Mercury News says the El Centro Kmart to shutdown in January, the website Foursquare says the Covina Kmart is now shutdown (other sources say it will shutdown in December), Cupertino Sears and Auto Center (98 jobs lost), somebody posted on yelp* that the Diamond Bar Kmart was shutting down in December (confirmed by Armijo Newspapers), Westfield Topanga Sears (122 jobs lost), it looks like the Blythe Kmart is being slowly shutdown despite denial by Sears Holdings. San Mateo Kmart being demolished to make room for 599 unit apartment complex, as part of the the Hayward Park Caltrain Station project. Atwater Kmart (74 jobs lost), Los Banos Kmart (67 jobs lost).

Colorado: Broomfield Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Glenwood Springs Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lone Tree Sears/Great Indoors, Longmont Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Pueblos’ South Side Kmart (52 jobs lost), Denver Kmart (number of jobs lost have not been made public at this time, but could be at least 40), Colorado Springs Kmart at Powers and Palmer Park boulevards (57 jobs lost), Fort Collins Sears (67 jobs lost), Denver-Cherry Creek North Sears store & Auto Center (66 jobs lost).

Connecticut: Waterbury Big Kmart, Torrington Kmart (73 jobs lost), Enfield Sears Optical (no word on jobs lost), Wallingford Sears Appliance & Hardware (employees say the shutdown was a surprise, I guess they don’t read Blind Bat News), Wallingford Sears Appliance & Hardware (at least 13 jobs lost).

Delaware: Dover Kmart (at least 72 jobs lost, some reports said 100), Seaford Sears (30 jobs lost), Claymont Kmart (87 jobs lost).

The property that’s home to an operating Kmart, on South Green Bay Road in Racine, was foreclosed by the local Sheriff and sold-off for $2.5-million, no word on what the new property owner will do with it. Fort Myers Kmart (67 jobs lost). Dicks Sportings Goods subleasing space in an existing Sears store in Palm Beach Gardens.

Georgia: Mount Berry Square Mall Sears and Auto Center shutting down in March, 86 jobs lost.  Macon Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Buford Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Douglasville Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Atlanta Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Columbus Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Jonesboro Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Cartersville Kmart (74 jobs lost), Hiram Kmart (53 jobs lost), Marietta-East Cobb Kmart, Warner Robins Kmart (77 jobs lost), Coweta County Kmart distribution center (164 jobs lost), one of the last two North Augusta Kmart to be torn down by new property owner from Canada, Sears Holdings denies the Kmart will shutdown.

Guam: Sears Hometown Store.

Hawaii: Iconic Nimitz HWY Kmart shutting down in March, 141 jobs lost!  Honolulu Sears (owned by GGP, 372 jobs lost! GGP spending $573-million chopping it up into smaller store spaces), Kauai Sears (41 jobs lost), Iwilei-Honolulu Kmart for lease (no confirmation of store closing).

Idaho: Finally official (I’ve been warning about it after a manager told me at least a year ago they were in an unofficial “holding  pattern”), Pocatello Kmart shutting down by April, 65 jobs lost.  Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost).

North Mayfair Kmart (99 jobs lost), Chicago Kmart at 5033 North Elston Avenue (99 jobs lost). By the way, Illinois elected officials gave Sears Holdings/Hoffman Estates a $150 million USD tax break to keep their headquarters in the state. The tax break was not tied to any promise not to close stores.

Indiana: Terre Haute Kmart by April, 62 jobs lost.  Anderson Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Saint John Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Indianapolis Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Richmond Sears (49 jobs lost), South Anthony Kmart (70 jobs lost), Fort Wayne Kmart on South Anthony Boulevard (70 jobs lost), FairOaks Mall Kmart, Logansport Sears (43 jobs lost), Muncie Kmart (59 jobs lost), Fort Wayne Kmart on Coliseum Boulevard North (69 jobs lost), Decatur Kmart (49 jobs lost), Indianapolis Kmart on Madison Avenue (131 jobs lost), Indianapolis Kmart on Washington Street (139 jobs lost), Bedford Kmart (62 jobs lost), Indianapolis (Evansville) Sears & Auto Center at Washington Square Mall (91 jobs lost), Greenwood Kmart (78 jobs lost), Plymouth Kmart (68 jobs lost), Bloomington Sears to be replaced by Whole Foods grocery store.

Iowa: Ottumwa Kmart shutting down by April, 38 jobs lost.  Cedar Rapids Kmart on 16th Ave (at least 40 jobs lost), Davenport Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Burlington Kmart (50 jobs lost), Coralville Sears (94 jobs lost, this is a store sold to GGP earlier in the year), Cedar Rapids Kmart on Collins Road NE (56 jobs lost), Mason City Kmart (50 jobs lost), Clive Kmart (at least 49 jobs lost), Ames Kmart (44 jobs lost), Fort Dodge Sears (no job loss numbers made public, yet. The Auto Center was secretly shutdown in September), 56 years old Mason City Sears & Auto Center (more than 100 jobs lost).   Davenport Kmart (59 jobs lost), Belvidere Kmart (67 jobs lost).

Kansas: North Topeka Kmart shutting down by Spring, 49 jobs lost.  Lawrence Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Merriam Kmart-then Sears-then Kmart (jobs lost unknown), Wichita Sears store & Auto Center (103 jobs lost), Manhattan Sears & Auto Center (number of jobs lost were never revealed).

Kentucky: Middlesboro Sears (in September 2012 the Sears store re-opened under independent ownership, official grand re-opening scheduled for November), Winchester Kmart, Hazard Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lexington Fayette Mall Sears (114 jobs lost!), Newport Kmart (81 jobs lost), Cannonsburg Sears and Sears Auto Center (no employee info given), Louisville Dixie Highway Kmart/Sears/Kmart shutdown and now being taken over by Kroger basically to sell the same crap the old Kmart did! Madisonville Kmart (39 jobs lost), Owensboro Sears store & Auto Center (52 jobs lost).

Louisiana: Slidell Sears (77 job lost), Gretna Kmart (94 jobs lost), Metairie Kmart secretly sold off, no word if it will be shutdown, Laplace Sears Hometown Store.

Maine: Lewiston Sears (60 to 70 jobs lost), Presque Isle Aroostook Centre Mall Sears (63 jobs lost), Aroostook Centre Mall Sears Auto Center leased out to VIP Tires & Service.

Maryland: Ellicott Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Gaithersburg Sears/Great Indoors, Landover Sears rebuild & call center (115 jobs lost), Baltimore Kmart on Wabash Avenue (107 jobs lost), Parkville Kmart (102 jobs lost), California Kmart (71 jobs lost), Sears Hometown Store in Perryville.

Massachusetts: North Reading Sears Hardware store closed, lease not renewed, Milford Kmart (80 jobs lost), Kingston Kmart (73 jobs lost).   Braintree Kmart on Grossman Drive shutting down.  Also, the Braintree South Shore Plaza Sears store is renting out an entire floor to Ireland based Primark.   Even with the lease to Primark there is still 4-thousand square feet of vacant space in the Sears store.  The Sears at the Auburn Mall shutdown on Black Friday due to electrical fire.  The store was experiencing electrical problems, an investigation is underway.

Michigan: Three Kmart stores by April, one in Virginia, Superior and Ironwood, 137 jobs lost!  Sears/Great Indoors, Brighton Sears Grand/Essentials, Harper Woods Sears Full line, Monroe Sears Full line, Adrian Sears Full line, Washington Township Kmart, Chesterfield Kmart, Woodhaven Kmart, Saginaw Kmart on Bay Road, Flint Kmart on Dort Highway (46 jobs lost), Gaylord Kmart (48 jobs lost), Sterling Kmart (58 jobs lost), Bloomfield Township Kmart and Sears, Bad Axe Kmart (61 jobs lost), Ypsilanti Township Kmart (83 jobs lost), Petoskey Kmart (45 jobs lost), Saint John’s Kmart (48 jobs lost), White Lake Township “Store of the Future” Kmart (42 jobs lost), Grand Blanc Kmart (49 jobs lost), Lapeer Kmart (56 jobs lost), Southgate Kmart (155 jobs lost), Detroit’s Telegraph Road Kmart (115 jobs lost), Waterford Township Sears (no word on how many jobs lost), Rochester Hills Kmart (77 jobs lost), ‘perfect Kmart town’ of Port Huron Kmart (188 jobs lost), Flint Kmart on Miller Road (81 jobs lost), Burton Kmart (85 jobs lost), Madison Heights Kmart (179 jobs lost), it’s now official the last remaining Saginaw Kmart (on Gratiot Road) will remain shutdown after its roof collapsed during a snowstorm back in January 2014 (Sears Holdings claims only 18 people worked there at the time of the collapse!), Ann Arbor Kmart (59 jobs lost), Iron Mountain Kmart (54 jobs lost), Bangor Township Sears aka Bay City Mall Sears, the Auto Center was already secretly shutdown some time ago (at least 47 jobs lost), Big Rapids Kmart (about 50 jobs lost). Vacant Wyandotte Sears Auto Center is being renovated at a cost to taxpayers of $1-million & 20-thousand, plus 15 years worth of tax breaks valued at $2-million! Shakopee Kmart distribution center shutdown and sold-off for $17-million in 2013, now it’s finally getting a new tenant; snowmobile and electric cart maker Polaris Industries will rent out a fraction of the building to use as their new parts warehouse. The Kmart Plaza in Sandusky sold to “A group of investors”, no word on what will happen to the Kmart store.

Minnesota: Thunderbird Mall Kmart shutting down in April, 48 jobs lost.  Willmar Kmart, Duluth Kmart, New Hope Kmart, White Bear Lake Kmart, Bemidji Kmart, Monticello Kmart, GGP owned Sears Auto Center in the Apache Mall closed (10 jobs lost), the entire Sears store in the Apache Mall being sold off, Fergus Falls Kmart (40 jobs lost), Fergus Falls Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Alexandria Kmart (46 jobs lost), Grand Rapids Kmart (61 jobs lost), Seritage is selling off three Sears Auto Centers in Minnetonka, Brooklyn Center and Saint Paul, Marshall Kmart (57 jobs lost), Oakdale Kmart (77 hourly wage employees losing their jobs, unknown how many salaried employees will become unemployed), Winona Kmart (67 jobs lost), Minneapolis city officials trying to shutdown profit making Nicollet Avenue Kmart, to make way for a new road. Missouri: Lee’s Summit Sears Grand/Essentials, Saint Louis Sears Full line, High Ridge Kmart (59 jobs lost), Ellisville Kmart (55 jobs lost), Springfield Kmart on South Campbell Avenue (60 jobs lost), South Belt Kmart (64 jobs lost), Florissant Kmart (100 jobs lost), O’Fallon Kmart (76 jobs lost).

Montana: Missoula Kmart (50 jobs lost), Great Falls Kmart (closed “until further notice” due to fire, 63 jobs on hold), Great Falls Sears store & Auto Center (65 jobs lost) due to great sales (ironically) the shutdown date has been moved from 07 December 2014 to 23 November, Bozeman Kmart (37 jobs lost), Missoula Sears store and Auto Center (57 jobs lost).

Nebraska: Grand Island Kmart (55 jobs lost), Omaha Kmart near West Maple Road (50 jobs lost).

Nevada: Sparks Kmart distribution center (100 jobs lost).

Sears Kmart update 12 January 2016: Massive store shutdowns! Kroger changes its mind!

Sears Holdings has issued notice of massive shutdowns of Kmarts across the U.S.  and grocer Kroger has backed out of plans to lease the top floor of the Sears store in the Cumberland Mall in Tennessee.  The space is currently owned by Seritage Growth Properties (a shell game company created by Sears Holdings).

Hawaii: Ala Moana Center (closed, see above)

Washington: Bellis Fair Mall (Bellingham store, see above)

Sears Kmart update 01 December 2015: Corporate cannibalism in Canada!

In Canada:  The New Glasgow Highland Square Mall Sears shutting down in September 2016.  The lease will not renewed.    The Sears Home Store in Saskatoon shutting down in April 2016.    The lease will not be renewed.  Sears Canada revealed they’ve sold two distribution centers for a grand total of $108.5-million CAD.  Interestingly, Sears Canada will continue to use one of those distribution centers.  What this means is they are desperate for cash and are engaging in what I call corporate cannibalism.  (Sears hires another executive known for corporate cannibalism!)

In Mississippi, U.S.A.: Foolish Anniston city leaders are considering spending taxpayer dollars to ‘repurpose’ the vacant Kmart property.  They’ll pay up to $3-million USD in rebates to anybody who can make it work!

Hawaii: Honolulu Sears (owned by GGP, 372 jobs lost! GGP spending $573-million chopping it up into smaller store spaces), Kauai Sears (41 jobs lost), Iwilei-Honolulu Kmart for lease (no confirmation of store closing).

Idaho: Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost). Across the street, in Pocatello, the property where the Kmart is located has a “pad site available” sign, posted ever since the Kmart bankruptcy. The Kmart building takes up most of the ‘pad’. Latest news from inside sources say Sears Holdings will not comment on any plans to expand the small amount of Craftsman products already being sold at the Kmart, or shift the Kenmore products line, from the closing Chubbuck Sears to the Pocatello Kmart. In fact all plans for the Pokey Kmart are in a ‘holding pattern’.

Massachusetts: North Reading Sears Hardware store closed, lease not renewed, Milford Kmart (80 jobs lost), Kingston Kmart (73 jobs lost).   Braintree Kmart on Grossman Drive shutting down.  Also, the Braintree South Shore Plaza Sears store is renting out an entire floor to Ireland based Primark.   Even with the lease to Primark there is still 4-thousand square feet of vacant space in the Sears store.  The Sears at the Auburn Mall shutdown on Black Friday due to electrical fire.  The store was experiencing electrical problems, an investigation is underway.

Arizona: In Phoenix, a whistleblower told ABC15 that taxsucker Honeywell is eliminating at least 1-thousand jobs, right after forced unpaid holiday furloughs!  The whistleblower said employees close to retirement will also be laid off, as well as pay cuts for those who will still be employed.  One reason for the secret layoffs is Honeywell is planning to move call center operations to Mexico.

California: In San Francisco, wearable electronics maker Jawbone laid off 60 employees “As part of our strategy to create a more ….successful company…”.  In West Hollywood, iconic Dominick’s restaurant shutting down after Xmas.  News reports said the elites of Hollywood entered through the back, anybody who came in through the front door was kicked out.

Connecticut: Japan based Canon Solutions America announced it is shutting down its Trumbull office, by the end of February 2016.

Failed State Illinois: In Obama’s homie town three charter schools being shutdown; Lighthouse Academy, Amandla High school and Betty Shabazz-Barbara A. Sizemore Academy.  Apparently they’ve failed to meet performance standards.  Food packager Tyson shutting down their Chicago hospitality food packaging plant saying the plant is too old and sales too slow to justify spending the money to update it. 480 jobs lost between now and October 2016!

Iowa: In West Des Moines, Kingdom Kids Academy shutdown. News reports say administrators refuse to say why, but employees say new management suddenly backed out and quit.  In Cresco, after 29 years Spectrum Thrift Store shutting down by Thanksgiving.  The temporary management said it was due to a “financial business decision”.

Kentucky:  Blackhawk Mining revealed it laid off 2-hundred people, blaming the crashing coal industry!  After investing $2.8-million USD back in 2010, heavy vehicle maker Caterpillar say sales are so bad they’re shutting down their Danville factory and consolidating ops back to Illinois, at least 75 jobs lost by the end of 2016.

Maryland: What housing industry recovery?  Clark Turner Homes now chapter 7 bankrupt busted.  News reports say the property developer hasn’t paid its debts for several months.   Company administrators blame the Too Big to Jail banking industry which cut-off their debt financing.

Failed State Massachusetts: Sears Holdings announced they will shutdown the Braintree Kmart on Grossman Drive.  Also, the Braintree South Shore Plaza Sears store is renting out an entire floor to Ireland based Primark.   Even with the lease to Primark there is still 4-thousand square feet of vacant space in the Sears store.  In Worcester, after 35 years iconic Classic Toy Shop shutting down when the inventory is gone.  The owner, Betsy Madson, said “I am the engine, and after 35 years, I am 65 years old and ready for quiet mornings…..This is supposed to be a happy thing. I am retiring.”   The sad thing is she tried to sell the business but there were no interested buyers.

Failed State Michigan: In Allegan, Ireland based drugs maker Perrigo laying off 1-hundred U.S. employees as part of their global elimination of 8-hundred jobs!   In Grand Rapids, a TGI Fridays restaurant was suddenly shutdown.

New Hampshire: After 23 years furniture store Blanchet Canadian Rocker shutting down in January 2016.  The pissed-off owner blames looky-loos who turnaround and buy on the internet: “When five people take pictures and one mommy comes back to buy it, you know they are finding it online.”-Charlie Wienberg, current owner

Failed State New Jersey: In West Orange, Barnabas Health issued a WARN saying 7-hundred health industry workers will become unemployed right after Xmas!   In Wayne, Haier America Trading issued a WARN saying 137 people will become jobless right after Xmas!  In Piscataway, IDT Corporation issued a WARN saying 84 employees rendered unemployed in January 2016.

Failed State New York: In North Dunkirk, NRG Energy issued a shutdown WARN for their power plant, at least 64 people will lose their jobs between February and September 2016.   In Maryknoll, Sodexo issued a shutdown WARN saying it lost the contract for the Dining Services at Catholic Foreign Mission ops, 38 people unemployed by January 2016.  NYC based Condé Nast ending publication of 33 years old Details magazine, jobs will be lost.

Oklahoma: Tulsa based BizJet International eliminating 150 Sale & Support jobs, 60% of its workforce!  Administrators blame it on crashing sales to the elitist VIP markets, mainly in China and Russia as those countries have been signing new contracts with Iranian companies.

Oregon:  Maker of metal parts for mining and construction equipment, Esco Corporation, shutting down its main Portland operation, 247 jobs gone by the end of 2016!  CEO Cal Collins said “It’s a reflection of the markets that we’re in and the weakness of where we’re at…”

Pennsylvania: In King of Prussia, Pointroll issued a WARN saying 93 people jobless in January 2016.  In Milton, ACF Industries issued a WARN saying 181 workers will be on the street in January 2016!  In Philadelphia, award winning Locust Moon comics shop shutting down by the end of 2015.  The owners said it’s the only way they could focus on publishing their own comics, and that doing retail business in “philly” sucks: “…it’s an uphill battle, trying to maintain an art-minded independent comic shop in west philly. we did the best we could….   …our days as comic shop proprietors are coming to an end.” 

Rhode Island:  Blue Cross Blue Shield announced it will eliminate 80 jobs over the next 18 months.  The health insurance company is joining the trend of contracting out its IT operations, ironically blaming ObamaCare (ironic because the health insurance industry created ObamaCare).

Vermont: Non-profit mental health service Health Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont laid off 12 employees.  Administrators said even with those layoffs they’ll be lucky to “break even” in 2016.

Virginia: British empire based U.S. taxsucker BAE laid off 185 people in a first round of job cuts!  The second round of job cuts, 4-hundred +,  will take place in December!  British empire administrators blame it on reduced spending by the cash strapped U.S. Navy.

Washington: Aluminium giant Alcoa hitting two cities hard, 880 people losing their jobs in January 2016! Layoffs will affect the Alco ops in Malaga, and the Alcoa Intalco ops in Ferndale.  The official WARN claims the job losses are temporary.  If you been following the debacle in the aluminum industry you’ll know that what they mean by ‘temporary layoffs’ is ‘as soon as aluminum prices go back up’ they’ll hire more employees.  Alcoa stated a while ago that it was shutting down operations around the world in an effort to reduce supplies of aluminum, thus forcing prices back up.  In Gig Harbor, Sariah Spices & Teas shutting down after Xmas.  The owner blames the A-hole city council which forced her to move her store’s signage, resulting in an immediate 10% reduction in business! She says she now doesn’t make enough money to justify renewing the lease.

Wisconsin:  In Fon Du Loc, after only nine months Three Guys and a Grill shutting down.  The owners said at first businesses was good then it suddenly stopped, no matter how many promotions they tried.  News reports say the location (a former church) has established a bad reputation due to a string of failed restaurant attempts.  Food packager Tyson shutting down their Jefferson pepperoni and salami packaging plant, saying the plant is too old and sales too slow to justify spending the money to update it.  At least 4-hundred jobs lost between now and October 2016!

Under the order, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) must cut its current budget by more than $30 million, 5 percent of the current 2013 appropriation, by September 30, 2013. In order to help achieve these savings and protect core programs, the BLS will eliminate two programs, including Mass Layoff Statistics, and all ‘measuring green jobs’ products. This news release is the final publication of monthly mass layoff survey data.”

Colorado:  Broomfield based Noodles & Company shutting down 16 restaurants! The ‘fast-casual’ ramen eatery lost $9.8-million USD in its 3rd quarter of 2015.  Denver-based Fidelity Exploration & Production suddenly shutdown and laid off 106 people: “The E&P business will cease to exist and we’re selling all of Fidelity’s assets.”-Rick Matteson, MDU Resources

Failed State Florida: In Sarasota, VIP Petcare eliminating 15 jobs right after Xmas.

Georgia:  Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe shutting down before Xmas! Employees were shocked by the sudden announcement, even though the hospital is bankrupt busted. News reports say the hospital was actually supposed to shutdown five years ago!  In Savannah, after 65 years Pinky Master’s bar shutdown.  The owners say they’re being hit with lawsuits and were evicted.

Indiana: Alliance Resources issued shutdown WARNs for its Gibson North and Gibson South mines, at least 120 jobs lost after Xmas!

Kentucky: In Sebree, Alliance Resources shutdown their Onton mine, 140 jobs lost!  In Corbin, Whayne Supply laid off seven people, blaming the crashing coal industry.   Louisville based healthcare provider Humana announced they will no longer accept patients under specific ObamaCare health plans, affecting at least 100-thousand people: “Operating results for the company’s individual commercial medical business continue to be challenged primarily due to the volatility related to the start of the healthcare exchange program created under the Affordable Care Act….”–Humana 3rd quarter financial report

Nebraska: In Lincoln, IAC Acoustics laid off 35 people, blaming “improved operational efficiency” and the oil industry.  In Grand Island, after 41 years the Sears Auto Center shutdown.

Failed State New York:  Texas de Brazil Churrascaria issued a shutdown WARN for their NYC restaurant, 34 people unemployed by February 2016.  More proof the internet is not to blame for killing brick-n-mortar jobs; internet ‘members only’ shopping site Ideel issued a shutdown WARN for their NYC operations. They’ve joined the mass exodus from the Big Apple and will move to Illinois, 63 New Yorkers unemployed by March 2016.  The city of Newburgh laying off ten firefighters right after Xmas.  This is what happens when local government weenie heads rely on federal taxpayer funded grants to run their day-to-day ops.  Conde Nast laid off seven employees from their GQ magazine.

Ohio:  Wheelchair maker Invacare has conducted a second round of layoffs, this time 30 people were let go.  Back in August they laid off 150 people!  It’s blamed on a 2012 U.S. FDA decree which reduces Invacare’s production numbers.  Texas based Flowserve shutting down their remaining Dayton operations by 2016, 80 jobs lost.  It’s blamed on crashing sales which have caused “a trending loss in operating income.”  Local news reports say at one time 3-hundred Ohioans were employed by Flowserve.

Oregon:  In Beaverton, Micro Power Electronics eliminating 140 jobs after Xmas, New York based administrators refused to say why!

Pennsylvania: In Erie, GE (General Electric) Transportation revealed that 1-thousand 5-hundred people will lose their jobs, due to a sudden and huge crash in orders from the railroad industry!  In Hawley, after 30 years gift store Tiny Treasures shutdown: “…average sale per customer was down and expenses continued to climb.  Everyone, from vacationers to locals, comment on how much they love the store. Unfortunately, many were not buying and we just can’t keep the doors open based on this trend.”-Alec Dazenski, manager

Tennessee: Maryville based Ruby Tuesday announced it is selling eight Lime Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants, and shutting down another eleven!  Administrators say the economy is forcing them to focus on their namesake brand.

Utah:  More layoffs at the British empire Rio Tinto owned Kennecott mines (aka Bingham Canyon Mine).  65 people laid off and 40 vacant jobs eliminated due to crashing metals prices!

Virginia: Tax-sucker General Dynamics warned it will conduct mass layoffs with its National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, due to crashing U.S. Department of Defense spending caused by the U.S. Congress passing temporary short term budgets.  In Portsmouth, after 126 years (surviving The Great Depression and numerous recessions) M. California: San Francisco based Twitter warned of mass layoffs in the next week, according to “unnamed sources”.   In South Lake Tahoe, The Cork and More wine store shutdown after 39 years due to nobody wanting to buy the business.

Florida: Paper products mill WestRock laid off 131 people, blaming crashing sales!

Failed State Illinois:  In Bloomington, God refuses to stop the shutdown of his Catholic Workers created food pantry for low income families Clair House. After almost 37 years their last meal will be the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.  As an example of the dumbing down of America, the director claims the food pantry has been serving the poor for “five decades”, yet also said Clair House was created in December 1978, do the math that’s not five decades.

Indiana: Aaron’s Rent-A-Center quietly shutdown four rental stores last week! No reason was given, but in the 3rd quarter of 2014 they shutdown 44 stores due to “lack of performance”.  In April of this year Reuters revealed that Aaron’s administrators have fought off several takeover attempts since 2014.  Could these latest store shutdowns have anything to due with the recently revealed fact that Aaron’s just spent $700-thousand USD buying new property in Pennsylvania?

Iowa:  In Grimes, after 26 years family owned Longview Golf Center forced to shutdown due to “new development”.

Maryland: In Elkton, after 12 years Terrapin Station Winery shutdown: “Mother Nature took her toll on our vineyards and we were not able to generate enough investment to get us rolling again.”-Janet and Morris Zwick, owners

Minnesota: The privately owned Moorehead Sears Hometown shutting down by Wednesday.  The owner gave up trying to sell the franchise store.

Missouri: In Columbia, Children’s Orchard used clothing store shutdown.  After 20 years the franchise owner decided not to renew her contract due to the company being under new ownership.

New Jersey:  After 18 years Sears Holdings shutting down their Roselle Sears Hardware store due to “landlord issues”.  Apparently all employees will be offered transfers.

New Mexico: University of New Mexico eliminating 1-hundred jobs, blaming non-stop DSS (what I call Disappearing Students Syndrome)!

New York:  Troubled NYC based law firm Milberg laid off 32 employees. The law firm has been struggling ever since its co-founders pled guilty to an illegal kickback scheme.

North Carolina: Iconic gun maker Remington laid off 41 people and warned of 21 more job cuts soon.  The job cuts took place in tiny Rockingham County, which is dealing with more than 3-hundred surprise job losses in the past month!

Pennsylvania: What building construction recovery?  McKees Rocks based insulation maker Geo V. Hamilton now chapter 11 bankrupt busted blaming years of lawsuits over cancer causing asbestos.  And industrial wire maker Wire Company Holdings-New York Wire also chapter 11 bankrupt busted, blaming almost $16-million USD in debts.

Vermont: Bankrupt busted Massachusetts based City Sports shutting down their Burlington store, 20 jobs lost. 

 

Washington DC: Federal Bureau of Prisons will stop offering pig products to prisoners, directly impacting the pork industry in the United States.  Realize that the United States has more people in prisons than any other country and you’ll understand how this will adversely affect the industrial pig killers.  Prison administrators say prisoners are refusing to eat pork.  Is this a sign that the majority of prisoners are Jews and Muslims, or maybe the prison kitchens don’t know how to cook it?  Prisons administrators were asked if there’s been an increase in incarceration of Jews or Muslims and the administrators refused to comment!  The pork industry is demanding a better explanation than prisoners just don’t like pork.

Arkansas: Marketing company Acxiom laid off 30 people.  25 people were laid off in February. Administrators say they lost $11.4-million USD for their fiscal 2015 year!

Colorado: Book seller Barnes&Noble shutting down their Denver store on New Year’s Eve.

Connecticut: What I call Disappearing Students Syndrome is forcing Korn Elementary School to shutdown half way through the current school year! School administrators revealed that enrollment has been declining for the past five years, despite local real estate weenie heads claiming that home sales are bringing in families with children.

Florida: Employees revealed that the Lake Park Kmart will shutdown by Thanksgiving.

Georgia: 14 years old Psycho Sisters consignment store in Sandy Springs shutting down after Xmas. It’s blamed on competition from national chain stores.  Formerly owned by Warren Buffet, World Marketing now bankrupt and eliminated 4-hundred jobs in Smyrna and Atlanta!  Attorneys say final paychecks will not be forthcoming, former employees will have to take legal action!    It’s been revealed that yesterday’s sudden shutdown of almost a dozen restaurants in Atlanta resulted in 1-thousand people suddenly becoming jobless!  And as I reported yesterday, administrators admitted that because the company is broke many former employees will not get a final paycheck!  So between the marketing company and the restaurant company 1,400 people in Georgia basically worked for free in the past couple of weeks!   (been there, experienced that here in Idaho, it’s amazing how many people think it’s illegal not to get a final paycheck)

 

Idaho:  Money crimes are big in Idaho.  A Boise County clerk has been charged with stealing $46,922 in tax & fee revenues (Boise County is not where Boise City is located, that’s Ada County).  Auditors also discovered that the lack of public transparency as to how local governments handle revenues contributed to the theft.  A former CFO for Bonner General Health has turned herself in after being accused of embezzling $225-thousand USD!  She left Bonner General hospital for Montrose Memorial Hospital in Colorado, but is no longer employed.  Investigators allege that she stole the money from her employer by using company credit cards and taking small amounts of cash.   KIFI TV reporting that a committee formed to assist Right to Work (you over) conservative Republican ‘lawmakers’ to create new taxes (under the guise of tax reforms of course) has meet publicly, for the first time! The Gem State is known as a place where politicians can rest assured they can meet in secret 100% of the time, and never reveal their machinations to the public, despite ‘open meeting’ laws.

Illinois: It’s been revealed that US Steel is considering eliminating 2-thousand jobs at its Granite City Works foundry! Last month the Pennsylvania based company announced it would be conducting massive layoffs, but gave no details.  US Steel has been eliminating jobs since last year, blaming China for dumping steel on the market and blaming the oil industry (their biggest customer) for cutting orders.

Kansas: In Wichita, after about 90 years Richmond Electric shutdown: “We’ve kind of struggled over the last … five years. People just use their tools, and then they throw them away. … It’s a very disposable society.”-Trish VanOsdel, owner

Louisiana: Baker School System eliminated 40 more jobs, on top of the 20 already eliminated since May.

Maine: In Bangor, Hammond Street Senior Center shutting down due to skyrocketing costs and declining revenue, affecting 5-hundred members!

Massachusetts: Boston Weak based, Mormon Mitt Romney co-founded Bain Capital liquidating its Absolute Return Capital hedge fund due to long term losses caused by a “challenging” environment.  

Michigan: Too Big to Jail Monroe Bank & Trust shutting down six offices in the name of “efficiency”.  After 60 years flower farm Hamilton Dahlia Farm shutdown.  The business peaked in 2006, now the owner says it’s time for her to retire.

Missouri: Evil Saint Louis based chemical warfare and GMO maker  Monsanto eliminating 2-thousand 6-hundred jobs blaming the crashing and burning global farm industry!  Gee, decades ago Monsanto swore their chemicals and Genetically Modified Organisms were going to save the global farm industry!!!

Nevada: Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority warning of layoffs because they’re short $1.8-million USD!

New Jersey: Argix Logistics suddenly laid off 164 people, one month after announcing a major tech deal with Descartes Systems Group!

New York: In Southampton, Side By Side Child Care Center shutdown due to crashing enrollment after two of its employees were arrested.  NYC based internet shopping website you never heard of Gilt Groupe laid off 45 people.  Is Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) behind Health Republic Insurance of New York issuing of a shutdown WARN?  147 jobs lost right after Xmas!

North Carolina: What was that about ObamaCare expanding access to healthcare? Franklin Medical Center shutting down next week, leaving the entire Franklin County without a hospital!  No thanks to the Affordable Care Act “Despite an outstanding staff, investments in the facility, and a reconfiguration of hospital services last fall, we were unable to create a sustainable model.”

Pennsylvania: Massachusetts based Osram Sylvania shutting down their Wellsboro glass/metal factory by September 2016, 114 jobs lost!  Due to the ‘recovered’ economy the factory is operating at only 50% capacity! 

South Dakota: After 51 years the 151 room Ramada Aberdeen Hotel and Conference Center shutting down due to “over-supply in a flat market”, 60 jobs lost.

Texas: Dallas based upscale retailer Neiman Marcus revealed it laid off 5-hundred people last week!  It’s the result of taking over competitors and trying to come up with money to pay for building new stores.  Kansas based resin company Invista laying off 75 Texans in Orange, administrators WARNed there could be more layoffs saying “The Orange unit is no longer competitive.” 

Washington: The Black Bear Diner in Olympia shutting down right before Thanksgiving.  45 jobs lost because the Gott-Damned landlord jacked up the rent by 60% and refused to make necessary building improvements!

Washington DC: For about 7-million U.S. citizens on Medicare part B their costs are expected to go up by 52% in 2016, for some their monthly payments will hit $509!  So much for taxpayer funded healthcare!  Apparently the old fogies on Medicare part B are now considered too wealthy.

Sears Kmart Update, 02 October 2015: Mo Merry Xmas shutdowns!

Kmart Australia reports a massive customer data breach, but claims no credit card numbers were stolen.  Aussie news reports say it’s similar to what happened to the Sears Holdings’ Kmart last year.

Three Kmarts going down between Xmas and the end of January 2016!  One in Vermont and two in Iowa.

Idaho: Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost). Across the street, in Pocatello, the property where the Kmart is located has a “pad site available” sign, posted ever since the Kmart bankruptcy. The Kmart building takes up most of the ‘pad’. Latest news from inside sources say Sears Holdings will not comment on any plans to expand the small amount of Craftsman products already being sold at the Kmart, or shift the Kenmore products line, from the closing Chubbuck Sears to the Pocatello Kmart. In fact all plans for the Pokey Kmart are in a ‘holding pattern’.

California: Washington based Haggen Foods issued mass shutdown WARNs for the following locations; 2 stores in Simi Valley, 2 stores in Tustin, 2 stores in Chula Vista, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Santa Clarita Valley (I previously reported on), La Mesa, San Marcos, San Ysidro, Bakersfield (I previously reported) and Los Osos, 620 jobs lost by October!    Kroger owned Ralph’s issued shutdown WARNs for their following grocery stores; Hermosa Beach, Santa Ana and Pico Rivera, 210 jobs lost by October!  Albertsons-Safeway issued yet another layoff WARN for Pleasanton, and a shutdown WARN for their Walnut Creek grocery store, 1-hundred jobs lost by October!   A company that claims to be “…the largest supplier of botanical ingredients in the U.S., for use in dietary supplements, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, personal care…”, BI NUTRACEUTICALS, issued layoff WARNs for Emeryville and Santa Clara, 79 jobs lost by September.   ObamaCare probably was the real reason for two dental companies merging back in May, now Zimmer Biomet Dental issued shutdown WARNs for their Carlsbad ops, 279 jobs lost by the end of October!  Mountain View based tech company Intuit eliminating more jobs, this time 249 laid off!

Florida: Too Big to Jail American Express issued a WARN for their Weston office, 86 jobs lost in time for Thanksgiving.

Idaho: The state Department of Insurance has approved ObamaCare (Affordable Care Act) health insurance rate increases by as much as 26% in 2016!  It was also revealed that ObamaCare Idaho insurance rates have already gone up by as much as 15%!  Health insurance providers claim that they still payout far more than what they get in premium payments under ObamaCare, which means from the insurance industry perspective their own ObamaCare (they wrote the law folks) is a failure!   The wimp-ass state Department of Insurance director feebly said “In spite of our best efforts in working with carriers, health insurance rates will be increasing for some Idahoans in 2016….we urge consumers to review their plans and shop wisely…”

Illinois: Heavy vehicle maker Caterpillar killing even more jobs, this time 475 people to become unemployed as sales continue to crash!

Iowa: Unnamed news sources say Dethmers Manufacturing (aka Demco) eliminated a “substantial” number of jobs.

Maine: ObamaCare forcing the new owners of Mid Coast Health Services walk-in medical clinic to shutdown in September.  Administrators said ObamaCare is “…realigning health care services.”

Maryland: Sears Holdings revealed they will shutdown their California Kmart right before Thanksgiving, 71 jobs lost.

Montana: Slow internet service provider CenturyLink shutting down their Kalispell retail store in September.

Nevada: ObamaCare created Nevada Health Co-Op shutting down, admitting that it cannot make enough money under ObamaCare to pay for day-to-day operating costs! 

New York: Sears Holdings revealed they will shutdown their Appliance Repair Division in Melville, 31 jobs lost in time for Thanksgiving.  What construction industry recovery? San Mateo Construction is closing up shop in White Plains after losing their contract with utility con artist ConEd, 90 jobs lost by the end of the month.  Sterling National Bank issued WARNs for several offices, at least 11 jobs lost right before Xmas.  In Brooklyn, after six years Bergen Street Comics shutting down in September.  The owner refused to comment to news media, but there are reports that rents in that neighborhood have gone through the roof.  Taxpayer rip-off artist NRG Energy finally shutting down the money-pit Huntley coal fired electricity power plant, 90 jobs lost in 2016.  It was revealed the power plant has lost millions of dollars over several decades!  NRG Energy will also idle their Dunkirk power plant in January 2016.

North Carolina:  After 115 years (surviving The Great deflationary Depression and numerous recessions) God refuses to stop the shutdown of ‘his’ Sutton Park Baptist Church.  Because of The Rapture, I mean declining membership, there are only about 18 members left.  But maybe it’s racism, after all the remaining members are ‘white’ and apparently no ‘black’ or ‘brown’ people want to join the church, according to local news reports.

Ohio: ObamaCare(?) forced taxpayer funded Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to layoff 17 people and reduce working hours for others.  Fluor BWXT warned 1-thousand 4-hundred people of mass layoffs at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant uranium decontamination operation in Piketon!  570 could be let go by 01 October!  Flour BWXT administrators blame a lack of taxpayer funding.  In Huber Heights, after six years Granny C’s Bakery shutting down due to skyrocketing operating costs: “A lot of my good friends, who’ve worked for me and who are still here are going to be jobless. We’ve never made money……When I get to the point where I don’t have any more money in my personal fund to switch over into the bakery funds to pay salaries, to pay ingredient costs, I can’t go any further.”-Rebecca McDaniel

Pennsylvania:  God refuses to stop what I call Disappearing Students Syndrome at ‘his’ La Salle University, 23 employees laid off due to a $12-million USD shortfall caused partly by crashing freshmen enrollments.

South Carolina: Greer based restaurant food supplier Ovation Brands was taken over by Texas based Food Management Partners (FMP).  As a result an undisclosed number of Ovation employees were laid off without warning: “FMP offered zero severance to the laid-off employees. No advanced notification was given either.”-unnamed former employee

The takeover of Ovation Brands will affect restaurant chains Ryan’s, Fire Mountain, Country Buffet, Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet and Tahoe Joes Famous Steakhouse.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) no longer issues mass layoff reports: “On March 1, 2013, President Obama ordered into effect the across-the- board spending cuts (commonly referred to as sequestration) required by the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act, as amended. Under the order, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) must cut its current budget by more than $30 million, 5 percent of the current 2013 appropriation, by September 30, 2013. In order to help achieve these savings and protect core programs, the BLS will eliminate two programs, including Mass Layoff Statistics, and all ‘measuring green jobs’ products. This news release is the final publication of monthly mass layoff survey data.”
