Sears & Kmart closing update, 20 March 2015: New York rebuild center shutting down? Florida Kmart going down! Georgia Kmart going down, but Sears denies it!

In Longmont, Colorado, plans were unveiled for a Kmart property that’s been vacant for the past five years (before I started this shutdown list).  It sounds ‘racist’ to me but local city and retail administrators are calling it 11 acres of “Latino Marketplace”.  Plaza Medina will be the new name and will offer retail and residential spaces specifically for ‘Latinos’.

In Wisconsin, meijer department and grocery store chain has purchased the failed Memorial Mall, which includes a vacant Sears store.  There are re-development plans in the works: “The site plan is still being developed and it is still several years away.  For the time being it is just going to be business as usual for the operations that are currently in there.”-Frank Guglielmi, meijer senior director

The Wall Street Journal reports that suppliers are becoming increasingly fearful of doing business with Sears Holdings: “Suppliers of tools and other goods have begun asking for sweetened payment terms to compensate them for the risk of shipping to the troubled retailer……Sears has offered to pay some vendors within 15 days, faster than its normal terms of up to 60 days for suppliers of apparel or hard goods, in return for a discount of around 3% to 5%…..”

In Michigan, efforts are being made to find a buyer for the Burton Kmart building (the Kmart shutdown last year).  The asking price is $2-million USD, but the REIT services company handling the property says they’ll consider other options.  So far all offers “…were just too low.”

In New York,  Sears Holdings issued a WARN saying they will shutdown their Bay Shore Product Rebuild Center in May.  A few days later Sears Holdings amended the WARN saying it was actually their Sears store and Auto Center that was being shutdown (something that had already been reported by local news media).

In Florida, a 39 years old Kmart in Fort Myers is shutting down by May, the property is being re-developed into smaller stores. Local news reports say a new tenant is already lined up (a flooring store), but did not say how long the re-development would take.

In Georgia, local news reports say there are signs a BIG-Kmart in North Augusta will be shutdown.  Sears Holdings denies the reports, however the North Augusta city council just approved plans for re-developing the property, plans which would have the Kmart torn down.   A Canadian REIT called Slate Asset Management bought the property and submitted plans to build four smaller stores (to be occupied by PetSmart, Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls and Rack Room Shoes) where the larger Kmart now stands.

update, 10 March 2015: Montana city losing, yet gaining Sears store?

Here’s the updated list of U.S. Sears/Kmart store closings that I’ve been compiling since the end of 2011:

Arizona: Scottsdale Sears/Great Indoors, Chandler Sears/Great Indoors.

Alabama: Gadsden Kmart (50 jobs lost), Mobile Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Auburn Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Anniston Kmart (no word yet on how many jobs lost), Birmingham Eastwood Kmart (70 jobs lost), Decatur Mall Sears (91 jobs lost), Fort Payne Kmart, Northport Kmart (68 jobs lost), Dothan Sears (68 jobs lost), Huntsville Kmart (73 jobs lost).

California: El Monte Sears (at least 40 jobs lost. Damien Arrula, El Monte’s economic development director, said the store manager had lied about what was going on: “The general manager of the store had just indicated to me that they were remodeling.”), two San Diego Sears (more than 80 jobs lost), Pleasant Hill Kmart (more than 50 jobs lost), Torrance Kmart, Fairfield Kmart (63 jobs lost), Lampert owned OSH taken over by Lowe’s home improvement in bankruptcy court, at least 17 of 99 stores to be closed down (935 jobs lost!), Rancho Cordova Kmart (97 jobs lost), San Clemente Kmart/Sears/Kmart on Camino de Estrella (58 jobs lost), placed on an official hit list in 2011 the Oceanside Kmart on College Boulevard finally being shut down, Banning Kmart (91 jobs lost) recently revealed that Sears Holdings is still paying rent on the abandoned property, Laguna Hills Mall Sears, San Diego Mid-City Kmart (73 jobs lost), Hemet Kmart (77 jobs lost), Oakland Sears repair center (75 jobs lost), San Mateo Kmart (82 jobs lost to an apartment building connected to public transportation), Hesperia Kmart building sold at a loss to a vulture capitalist REIT, no word on if the Kmart will be shutdown. Customers complain that the Kmart employees have a bad attitude, gee I wonder why? Yuba City Kmart (63 jobs lost), Rocklin Kmart (at least 63 jobs lost, the store had just posted “Now Hiring” signs), San Leandro Kmart (102 jobs lost), San Jose Mercury News says the El Centro Kmart to shutdown in January, the website Foursquare says the Covina Kmart is now shutdown (other sources say it will shutdown in December), Cupertino Sears and Auto Center (number of employees affected not made public, no WARN filed), somebody posted on yelp* that the Diamond Bar Kmart was shutting down in December (confirmed by Armijo Newspapers), Westfield Topanga Sears (122 jobs lost), it looks like the Blythe Kmart is being slowly shutdown despite denial by Sears Holdings.

Colorado: Broomfield Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Glenwood Springs Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lone Tree Sears/Great Indoors, Longmont Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Pueblos’ South Side Kmart (52 jobs lost), Denver Kmart (number of jobs lost have not been made public at this time, but could be at least 40), Colorado Springs Kmart at Powers and Palmer Park boulevards (57 jobs lost), Fort Collins Sears (67 jobs lost), Denver-Cherry Creek North Sears store & Auto Center (66 jobs lost).

Connecticut: Waterbury Big Kmart, Torrington Kmart (73 jobs lost), Enfield Sears Optical (no word on jobs lost), Wallingford Sears Appliance & Hardware (employees say the shutdown was a surprise, I guess they don’t read Blind Bat News).

Delaware: Dover Kmart (at least 72 jobs lost, some reports said 100), Seaford Sears (30 jobs lost), Claymont Kmart (87 jobs lost).

Georgia: Macon Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Buford Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Douglasville Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Atlanta Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Columbus Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Jonesboro Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Cartersville Kmart (74 jobs lost), Hiram Kmart (53 jobs lost), Marietta-East Cobb Kmart, Warner Robins Kmart (77 jobs lost), Coweta County Kmart distribution center (164 jobs lost), recently revealed one of the last two North Augusta Kmart to be torn down by new property owner from Canada, Sears Holdings denies the Kmart will shutdown.

Guam: Sears Hometown Store.

Hawaii: Honolulu Sears (owned by GGP, 372 jobs lost! GGP spending $573-million chopping it up into smaller store spaces), Kauai Sears (41 jobs lost), Iwilei-Honolulu Kmart for lease (no confirmation of store closing).

Idaho: Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost). Across the street, in Pocatello, the property where the Kmart is located has a “pad site available” sign, posted ever since the Kmart bankruptcy. The Kmart building takes up most of the ‘pad’. Latest news from inside sources say Sears Holdings will not comment on any plans to expand the small amount of Craftsman products already being sold at the Kmart, or shift the Kenmore products line, from the closing Chubbuck Sears to the Pocatello Kmart. In fact all plans for the Pokey Kmart are in a ‘holding pattern’.

By the way, Illinois elected officials gave Sears Holdings/Hoffman Estates a $150 million USD tax break to keep their headquarters in the state. The tax break was not tied to any promise not to close stores.

Kentucky: Middlesboro Sears (in September 2012 the Sears store re-opened under independent ownership, official grand re-opening scheduled for November), Winchester Kmart (back in May, Rankin Paynter bought out what was left of the inventory and gave it to charity), Hazard Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lexington Fayette Mall Sears (114 jobs lost!), Newport Kmart (81 jobs lost), Cannonsburg Sears and Sears Auto Center (no employee info given), Louisville Dixie Highway Kmart/Sears/Kmart shutdown and now being taken over by Kroger basically to sell the same crap the old Kmart did! U.S. Job Losses & Store Closings, 23 – 26 February 2015: “The shop was losing so much money…” “…a huge drop in sales…” “…the economy has dictated.” “…makes it financially impossible…”

Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns:

California: Once again Boeing issued several WARNs, this time at least 94 people will be laid off by the end of April.  Due to the hostile take over by Cerberus Albertsons, Safeway issued several more WARNs saying at least 132 people will lose their jobs in Pleasanton and Dublin.  In San Diego more job destruction; DialAmerica issued a WARN saying they’re shutting down their factory by May, 227 jobs lost!  Midland Credit issued a WARN saying 40 people will be laid off in May.  Active Network issued a layoff WARN saying 53 people will become jobless at the beginning of May.  In Los Angeles, is Obama Care behind the layoff of 15 employees at the Bienvenidos Children Center?  The WARN only says the layoffs will take place in April.  In Torrance, Japanese CD maker Panasonic issued a WARN saying they will shut down their disk factory by the end of April, at least 87 jobs lost.  In Pittsburg, steel maker USS-POSCO issued a WARN saying they must “temporarily” shutdown their factory at the end of April, at least 666 jobs lost!  In Valencia, Better Bakery issued a layoff WARN for April, 45 jobs lost.  In San Francisco, RealPage issued a shutdown WARN for April, 89 jobs lost.  In Shafter, more Baker Hughes oil employees getting the shaft as 50 were rendered jobless without warning.  Don’t blame oil prices, blame the take over by Halliburton.  In Vernon, V&L Produce issued a layoff WARN saying 87 people will be laid off by the end of April.  Palo Alto based Hewlett Packard (HP) announced it will kill off even more jobs, just as soon as it’s done killing off 55-thousand jobs currently!  It’s part of the company’s plans to be split into two separate entities.  Maker of revolutionary Light Field Cameras, Lytro is reportedly laying off 50 employees, apparently because the successful company is shifting focus to internet-social media and video.

Colorado: Lakewood based Einstein Bros Bagels announced it will shutdown 39 stores across the United States, apparently due to lack of sales: “After careful evaluation, Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc. (“ENRGI”) has come to the difficult decision to close 39 underperforming restaurants, effective Tuesday, February 24, 2015.” 

Connecticut: Ohio based grocery store XPect Discounts announced it will shutdown all remaining stores in The Constitution State by the end of 2015!  Local news reports say no ‘official’ reason was given.  In Southbury, after 12 years the owners of Koenig Art Emporium announced they will shutdown in March saying “as the economy has dictated.”

Florida: Another women’s clothing operation going down; local news reports say Fort Myers based Chico’s is about to layoff huge numbers of employees due to the failure to find a buyer.  120 stores will be shutdown by 2017, with a minimum of 240 jobs lost! Company administrators blame an “unexpected” jump in operating costs, and blames bad sales on those evil fickle female shoppers.

Illinois: In Naperville, the Hollywood Palms Theater is now chapter 11 bankrupt busted and up for sale.  The owner was recently arrested and charged with fraud and tax evasion.

Indiana: ModusLink issued a WARN saying 320 people will become jobless in April!  Administrators say they lost a major client.

Massachusetts:   It may have survived the Marathon bombing but it can’t survive the Boston Weak economy; the iconic FORUM Bar & Restaurant shutdown, the owner blames evil property owners for killing it off: “After the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon….four long months of reconstruction…bureaucracy…the current real estate climate on Boylston Street has motivated FORUM’s landlord to raise rent…nearly three times our current rate…makes it financially impossible…”

Michigan: In Mount Morris, after 43 years meijer department and grocery store shutdown. Administrators basically said the sales were not high enough to justify renewing the lease. News reports say the building will be torn down, but no other info was available, 190 jobs lost!   In Port Huron, after more than ten years the Backyard Soaps and Candles retail outlet shutdown.  The owners blamed the bad economy saying “The shop was losing so much money…we didn’t get enough foot traffic.”  The soap maker still sells over the internet.

Missouri: Toys R Us is shutting down their Ferguson store in March, 36 jobs lost.  The property is up for sale.

Nebraska: Italy-Netherlands based New Holland farm equipment maker CNH Industrial announced they will layoff 136 U.S. citizens at their Grand Island factory by the end of July!  Company administrators blame the bad global economy for crashing sales.

Nevada: In Reno, after 11 years the Tronix Nightclub shutdown, blaming “a huge drop in sales and customer’s support”.

New Jersey:  After 65 years the Surflight Theater now chapter 7 bankrupt busted and dead.  The operators blame years of bad sales and a 2012 fire followed by damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.  In 2014 they tried to raise money through private donations, but failed.  Pennsylvania based arena operator Aramark announced that more than 17-hundred jobs will be lost when they shutdown the Izod Center after March!  Administrators blame crashing ticket sales.

New York:  Sears Holdings issued a WARN saying they will shutdown their Bay Shore Product Rebuild Center in May, 134 jobs lost!   Internet based real estate company Trulia issued a WARN saying they will layoff a small number of employees by August, it’s connected to the hostile takeover by internet based Zwillow.  Peninsula Counseling Center issued a WARN saying they will shutdown their Valley Stream Article 31 Clinic in April, 77 jobs lost (is Obama Care to blame?).   Too Big to Jail Community National Bank issued a WARN relating to their 2014 sale to Bridgehampton National Bank (aka Bridge Bankcorp), more than 1-hundred jobs could be lost by May!  Too Big to Jail Bank of America announced that 53 people will become unemployed as they shutdown their Jericho mortgage office.  In NYC owner of Comedy Central and MTV, Viacom is warning of massive layoffs, blaming crashing ratings.  Too Big to Jail JP Morgan Chase announced they will shutdown 3-hundred offices over the next two years, blaming new rules penalizing big banks for having large uninsured accounts.

North Carolina: Charlotte Marriott City Center hotel laid off 68 people, blaming remodeling work.  In Charlotte, famous chef Emeril announced he is shutting down his e2 emeril’s eatery and e2GO in April: “The restaurant was never able to achieve the volume projected…”-facebook statement

Pennsylvania:   O’Hara based Giant Eagle owned Good Cents Grocery shutting down all eight stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio, in March. Administrators with Giant Eagle blamed the bad economy for the failure of their Good Cents Grocery chain. Some of the Good Cents Grocery stores had been open for only one year, replacing Valu King stores! Each store has about 35 employees.   Noble Energy announced it is shutting down it’s 83 years old Ardmore office, 125 jobs lost!  Company administrators blame the volatile oil industry, and also warned they will consolidate their Texas ops saying “by the end of April, folks will know whether they do or don’t have a position”.

Rhode Island: Obama Care destroys 41 jobs at the Women & Infants Hospital. Work hours for other employees are being reduced.  Local news reports referred to Obama Care as a “challenging healthcare environment”.

Texas: Oil field company Tenaris announced it will shutdown its Conroe ops by April, 230 jobs lost! But wait, don’t blame it all on oil prices, company administrators say the main reason is “Record levels of unfairly traded imports of OCTG (oil country tubular goods) from South Korea…”  In Waco, aircraft company L-3 laid off 115 people!  Company administrators blamed “reduced volume of work”.

Washington: Reports that student travel company People to People laid off about 50 people in Spokane.  Local news reports say company administrators refuse to comment.  At one point the company had 2-hundred employees but is apparently down to just 50 after this latest round of layoffs.  The owner of Boat Street Cafe says she will shut it down in May, she still has two other restaurants.  Redmond based Microsoft announced it will shutdown two factories in China by the end of March, killing off 9-thousand jobs!

More Economic Decline: East Idahoans oblivious to shutdown of their only Postal Processing Center!

“I thought it was just a rumor.”

“They’ll just move the work to Clark Street Post Office.”

“There’s a Postal Processing Center here?”

These are most common responses I got from talking to fellow east Idahoans.  18 April 2015 is the last day of operations for the Gateway Station Processing Center on Flandro Drive in Pocatello.

Another common misconception I heard was that it was just the Gateway Post Office that was being consolidated with Clark Street Post Office.  Wrong!

The Gateway Processing Center is the mail sorting and processing center for all of eastern Idaho and it will be shutdown by 18 April 2015.  From that point on all mail will be sent out of state to Salt Lake City, Utah, even your letters sent ‘cross town!

Last week several meetings were held with Gateway employees notifying them of impending layoffs.  At least two were offered “involuntary transfers” to Salt Lake City (meaning if they refuse they lose their jobs).  Others were told to apply for two open Letter Carrier positions in Pocatello, however, at least 30 employees are already on that list and those two positions have been ‘open’ for a while.  Since January about eight Gateway employees were forced to take early retirement and about a dozen have already been transfered out of the area.  At least 50 good paying jobs are being lost.

Approximately 13 employees will stay on after 18 April 2015 to continue loading dock ops, and run “window operations” at the Gateway Post Office.

Unconfirmed rumors have it that eventually all Post Offices in the area will be shutdown, except Gateway Post Office, meaning everybody in the cities of Pocatello and Chubbuck will have only one Post Office.

The mayor of Pocatello has called for public hearings but it sounds like most residents don’t understand the situation, or don’t care.  State and federal level politicians seem too concerned with their pet projects.  We haven’t heard anything from the Chubbuck city council or mayor.  In fact, the whole of eastern Idaho doesn’t seem to care even though the Gateway shutdown will directly impact mail delivery for all of east Idaho.

And lets not forget the numerous east Idaho businesses that use the United States Postal Service (USPS), like the company that makes those back breaking weight vests for divers, or the company that packs back breaking amounts of spent ammo casings into Flat Rate boxes, or the company that ships back breaking “liquid” in Flat Rate boxes.  I say back breaking because package sorting is still done by hand at the Gateway Processing Center.

Which brings me to some data about Gateway, data that belies any logical reason for shutting it down.  Despite still sorting packages and First Class “chunks” by hand, Gateway is the highest rated postal processing center for meeting deadlines and accuracy, higher than fully automated centers!  In fact Gateway gets “incoming” mail from Boise, Idaho, and Salt Lake City that’s actually meant for other states, meaning Boise and Salt Lake screwed up!

And speaking of getting mail from Boise; in the past week and a half Boise has increased the number of trucks sent to Gateway to five per day.  There’s a new “extra” 04:00 hours Boise truck arriving six days per week now.

USPS administrators claim there might be only a day delay in mail delivery, that’s impossible.  It will take one day to drive the daily mail down to Salt Lake City, then another day to drive it back, that’s two days right there.  Data already shows that Salt Lake City mail processors take longer to sort the mail than Gateway, and now they have to sort east Idaho’s mail as well, so who knows how long that will take.  Now couple that with the fact that 82 USPS processing centers across the United States are being shutdown this year, and an estimated 15-thousand USPS jobs being eliminated, that’s got to mean a significant delay in delivery!

Between 2012 and 2013 about 141 USPS processing centers were consolidated or shutdown.  Since 2006 approximately 216-thousand postal jobs were eliminated!

Postal services are still far cheaper than UPS or FedEx.  Some people say shutting down postal centers are necessary because the USPS is losing money, but if that were the case how was the USPS able to hand Congress billions of dollars in cash to fund the government retirement system? (that’s doubly impressive since the USPS is not taxpayer funded)  And if the USPS is a money losing operation then why is Staples so adamant about taking over Post Office operations?

For years now the American Postal Workers Union has been warning that the U.S. Congressional Postal Commission is working to sell off the USPS to the highest bidder.  In the long run it will mean low paid workers with no benefits and yet you’ll have to pay more for shipping, that’s always what happens.

When are the People going to wake up and take action?

Corporate Evil: USPS & Staples continue ‘trial’ deal to run Post Offices!

“The United States Postal Service is a wonderful national treasure, enshrined in the Constitution and supported by the American people. Without any taxpayer funding, the USPS serves 150 million households and businesses each day, providing affordable, universal mail service to all – including rich and poor, rural and urban, without regard to age, nationality, race or gender. One is the philosophy of the Board of Governors, former Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, and some on Wall Street who want to get their hands on the Postal Service’s $68 billion in revenue per year.”-Mark Dimondstein, president American Postal Workers Union

Nobody seems to be paying attention to the fact that Staples and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are continuing a trial deal that has Staples handling your mail.  The move violates the Constitution and federal law!

Reports out of Antioch, California, say a Staples store has been handling U.S. mail by untrained and unsworn (Postal Employees must swear an oath of loyalty and to uphold the Constitution) Staples employees, as well as leaving U.S. mail unattended overnight (a violation of federal law).

The deal with Staples and the U.S. Congress controlled USPS is fully alive despite news reports (during July 2014) which said the deal was dead.  This trial deal involves 80 Staples stores across the U.S. and   according to the Antioch Herald the local Staples store has been operating as a Post Office since November 2013, and apparently still is.

Even the American Postal Workers Union says the deal that was reported dead by main stream news media is alive and well, and the new January 2015 takeover of Office Depot by Staples is part of a larger conspiracy: “In the past year, over the objections of the APWU, consumer organizations, civil rights advocates and teacher groups, Staples has begun offering mail services at its retail stores. In doing so, Staples has replaced highly-trained USPS workers with its own unskilled, low-wage employees. Concurrently, the USPS has reduced hours in some post offices and encouraged customers to use Staples stores instead.

In documents obtained by the union, the Postal Service outlined plans to transfer USPS work to Staples in order to reduce employment and hours of service to the public in neighborhood post offices.”-04 February 2015

Sears & Kmart closing update, 10 March 2015: Montana city losing, yet gaining Sears store? After 13 years abandoned Kmart finally has new tenant!

In Tennessee, a woman was caught trying to walk out of a Kingsport Kmart with an entire jewelry countertop display case.  Police say it had $9-thousand USD worth of earrings in it.  Store employees say the woman was so brash that she openly cut a security cable with wire cutters before putting the display case in the shopping cart.

In Illinois, repots that a Christian school wants to take over an abandoned Kmart.  Cristo Rey Saint Martin’s College Preparatory school was given the OK by Waukegan city administrators to move into the Kmart, which shutdown in 2012.   Church administrators hope to have the building remodeled by the 2015-16 school year, and also hope God will grace them with at least 4-hundred students.

A man running for mayor of Anderson, Indiana, has proposed turning an abandoned Sears store into a children’s museum, at taxpayer expense of course.

Reports say the Burton, Michigan, Kmart is still for sale (it shutdown in 2014) for an asking price of $2-million.  Apparently the city administrators are willing to instantly change the zoning of the property for whomever wants to move in.

In Asheboro, North Carolina, a Kmart store that was abandoned 13 years ago finally has a new tenant.   Harbor Freight Tools gave city administrators notice that they plan to move in during the next six months.  But don’t get too excited, Harbor Freight Tools is a small operation and will take up only one third of the space in the abandoned Kmart building.

In Montana the Southgate Mall Sears & Auto Center will shutdown in June.  Sears Holdings hopes to find a sucker for their much smaller independent franchise owner-operator Sears Hometown store, the location of which has yet to be determined.

04 March 2015: More taxpayers paying for abandoned Kmarts! 

Here’s the updated list of U.S. Sears/Kmart store closings that I’ve been compiling since the end of 2011:

Arizona: Scottsdale Sears/Great Indoors, Chandler Sears/Great Indoors.

Alabama: Gadsden Kmart (50 jobs lost), Mobile Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Auburn Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Anniston Kmart (no word yet on how many jobs lost), Birmingham Eastwood Kmart (70 jobs lost), Decatur Mall Sears (91 jobs lost), Fort Payne Kmart, Northport Kmart (68 jobs lost), Dothan Sears (68 jobs lost), Huntsville Kmart (73 jobs lost).

California: El Monte Sears (at least 40 jobs lost. Damien Arrula, El Monte’s economic development director, said the store manager had lied about what was going on: “The general manager of the store had just indicated to me that they were remodeling.”), two San Diego Sears (more than 80 jobs lost), Pleasant Hill Kmart (more than 50 jobs lost), Torrance Kmart, Fairfield Kmart (63 jobs lost), Lampert owned OSH taken over by Lowe’s home improvement in bankruptcy court, at least 17 of 99 stores to be closed down (935 jobs lost!), Rancho Cordova Kmart (97 jobs lost), San Clemente Kmart/Sears/Kmart on Camino de Estrella (58 jobs lost), placed on an official hit list in 2011 the Oceanside Kmart on College Boulevard finally being shut down, Banning Kmart (91 jobs lost) recently revealed that Sears Holdings is still paying rent on the abandoned property, Laguna Hills Mall Sears, San Diego Mid-City Kmart (73 jobs lost), Hemet Kmart (77 jobs lost), Oakland Sears repair center (75 jobs lost), San Mateo Kmart (82 jobs lost to an apartment building connected to public transportation), Hesperia Kmart building sold at a loss to a vulture capitalist REIT, no word on if the Kmart will be shutdown. Customers complain that the Kmart employees have a bad attitude, gee I wonder why? Yuba City Kmart (63 jobs lost), Rocklin Kmart (at least 63 jobs lost, the store had just posted “Now Hiring” signs), San Leandro Kmart (102 jobs lost), San Jose Mercury News says the El Centro Kmart to shutdown in January, the website Foursquare says the Covina Kmart is now shutdown (other sources say it will shutdown in December), Cupertino Sears and Auto Center (number of employees affected not made public, no WARN filed), somebody posted on yelp* that the Diamond Bar Kmart was shutting down in December (confirmed by Armijo Newspapers), Westfield Topanga Sears (122 jobs lost), it looks like the Blythe Kmart is being slowly shutdown despite denial by Sears Holdings.

Colorado: Broomfield Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Glenwood Springs Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lone Tree Sears/Great Indoors, Longmont Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Pueblos’ South Side Kmart (52 jobs lost), Denver Kmart (number of jobs lost have not been made public at this time, but could be at least 40), Colorado Springs Kmart at Powers and Palmer Park boulevards (57 jobs lost), Fort Collins Sears (67 jobs lost), Denver-Cherry Creek North Sears store & Auto Center (66 jobs lost).

Connecticut: Waterbury Big Kmart, Torrington Kmart (73 jobs lost), Enfield Sears Optical (no word on jobs lost), Wallingford Sears Appliance & Hardware (employees say the shutdown was a surprise, I guess they don’t read Blind Bat News).

Delaware: Dover Kmart (at least 72 jobs lost, some reports said 100), Seaford Sears (30 jobs lost), Claymont Kmart (87 jobs lost).

Florida: Fernandina Beach Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Callaway Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Orange City Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Deland Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Stuart Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), West Palm Beach Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Port St. Lucie Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Crystal River Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), New Smyrna Beach Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Saint Augustine Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Pompano Beach Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Jacksonville Kmart on 5751 Beach Boulevard (71 jobs lost), second Kmart in Jacksonville on 4645 Blanding Boulevard (83 jobs lost), Ocoee Sears (102 jobs lost), Pensacola Kmart on Airport Boulevard closed in 2011, Pensacola Kmart on Mobile Highway closed in February 2013 (69 jobs lost), Pensacola Kmart on East 9 Mile Road will close in May (73 jobs lost), Hialeah Kmart (67 jobs lost), Bonita Springs Kmart (67 jobs lost), Mount Dora Kmart (100 jobs lost), Lake Mary Kmart, Panama City Beach Kmart (54 jobs lost), Winter Park Kmart (100 jobs lost), Niceville Kmart (59 jobs lost), Winter Haven Kmart (92 jobs lost), Palm Bay Kmart, Oakland Park Kmart (112 jobs lost), Clearwater Sears Auto Center (21 jobs lost), Zephyrhills Kmart (70 jobs lost), Winter Springs Kmart (69 jobs lost), Naples Kmart (72 jobs lost), New Port Richey Kmart (58 jobs lost), ‘redevelopment’ of Aventura Sears & Auto Center into an “open-air village” (unknown how many jobs affected), Kmart on Northeast 108 Street being annexed by Miami Shores, Sears Holdings threatens to shutdown Kmart as a result of higher local taxes. The property that’s home to an operating Kmart, on South Green Bay Road in Racine, was foreclosed by the local Sheriff and sold-off for $2.5-million, no word on what the new property owner will do with it.

Georgia: Macon Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Buford Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Douglasville Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Atlanta Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Columbus Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Jonesboro Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Cartersville Kmart (74 jobs lost), Hiram Kmart (53 jobs lost), Marietta-East Cobb Kmart, Warner Robins Kmart (77 jobs lost), Coweta County Kmart distribution center (164 jobs lost).

Guam: Sears Hometown Store.

Hawaii: Honolulu Sears (owned by GGP, 372 jobs lost! GGP spending $573-million chopping it up into smaller store spaces), Kauai Sears (41 jobs lost), Iwilei-Honolulu Kmart for lease (no confirmation of store closing).

Idaho: Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost). Across the street, in Pocatello, the property where the Kmart is located has a “pad site available” sign, posted ever since the Kmart bankruptcy. The Kmart building takes up most of the ‘pad’. Latest news from inside sources say Sears Holdings will not comment on any plans to expand the small amount of Craftsman products already being sold at the Kmart, or shift the Kenmore products line, from the closing Chubbuck Sears to the Pocatello Kmart. In fact all plans for the Pokey Kmart are in a ‘holding pattern’.

By the way, Illinois elected officials gave Sears Holdings/Hoffman Estates a $150 million USD tax break to keep their headquarters in the state. The tax break was not tied to any promise not to close stores.

The Auto Center was secretly shutdown in September).

Kansas: Lawrence Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Merriam Kmart-then Sears-then Kmart (jobs lost unknown), Wichita Sears store & Auto Center (103 jobs lost), Manhattan Sears & Auto Center (number of jobs lost were never revealed).

Kentucky: Middlesboro Sears (in September 2012 the Sears store re-opened under independent ownership, official grand re-opening scheduled for November), Winchester Kmart (back in May, Rankin Paynter bought out what was left of the inventory and gave it to charity), Hazard Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Lexington Fayette Mall Sears (114 jobs lost!), Newport Kmart (81 jobs lost), Cannonsburg Sears and Sears Auto Center (no employee info given), Louisville Dixie Highway Kmart/Sears/Kmart shutdown and now being taken over by Kroger basically to sell the same crap the old Kmart did! Madisonville Kmart (39 jobs lost), Owensboro Sears store & Auto Center (52 jobs lost).

Louisiana: Slidell Sears (77 job lost), Gretna Kmart (94 jobs lost), Metairie Kmart secretly sold off, no word if it will be shutdown.

Maine: Lewiston Sears (60 to 70 jobs lost), Presque Isle Aroostook Centre Mall Sears (63 jobs lost), Aroostook Centre Mall Sears Auto Center leased out to VIP Tires & Service.

Maryland: Ellicott Sears (at least 40 jobs lost), Gaithersburg Sears/Great Indoors, Landover Sears rebuild & call center (115 jobs lost), Baltimore Kmart on Wabash Avenue (107 jobs lost).

Massachusetts: North Reading Sears Hardware store closed, lease not renewed, Milford Kmart (80 jobs lost), Kingston Kmart (73 jobs lost).

Minnesota: Willmar Kmart, Duluth Kmart, New Hope Kmart, White Bear Lake Kmart, Bemidji Kmart, Monticello Kmart, GGP owned Sears Auto Center in the Apache Mall closed (10 jobs lost), the entire Sears store in the Apache Mall being sold off, Fergus Falls Kmart (40 jobs lost), Fergus Falls Kmart (at least 40 jobs lost), Alexandria Kmart (46 jobs lost), Grand Rapids Kmart (61 jobs lost), Seritage is selling off three Sears Auto Centers in Minnetonka, Brooklyn Center and Saint Paul, Marshall Kmart (57 jobs lost), Oakdale Kmart (77 hourly wage employees losing their jobs, unknown how many salaried employees will become unemployed), Winona Kmart (67 jobs lost), Minneapolis city officials trying to shutdown profit making Nicollet Avenue Kmart, to make way for a new road. Oklahoma: Oklahoma City Sears (98 jobs lost, GGP owned, GGP wants a $2 million sales tax rebate, claiming it’s needed to offset capital investments needed to bring the space up to the standards for potential new tenants), Shawnee Sears (31 jobs lost), Sand Springs Kmart (52 jobs lost), Muskogee Sears (60 jobs lost), Enid Sears and Auto Center (at least 38 jobs lost).

U.S. Job Losses & Store Closings, 19 – 22 February 2015: “It absolutely killed us…” ObamaCare kills off 191 years old company! “There’s money here….but the future is a question.” “We will truly miss you.”

Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns:

Arizona: Local news media claiming the biggest employer in the Grand Canyon State, Asarco mining company, will layoff 160 people  in Pinal and Gila counties!  Asarco administrators blame the layoffs on an 80% crash in the price of copper.

California:  Iconic Frederick’s of Hollywood announced it must shutdown at least 31 stores across the U.S., including their original store in Hollywood!  Company administrators warned more stores could be shuttered saying “These stores should have been closed years ago.”   Safeway grocery chain issued a WARN saying another 213 jobs will be lost in April! Blame Cerberus Albertsons for the hostile takeover of Safeway.  In Los Angeles, after getting $24-million USD from ailing Warner Brothers, and claiming to be seeking to hire 15 people, internet video game company Machinima laid off 13 employees.  San Diego based taxsucking military contractor Cubic Corporation is combining two ops in order to cut $17-million, at least 150 people will be laid off!

Colorado: Lakewood based Einstein Bros Bagels announced it will shutdown 39 stores across the United States, apparently due to lack of sales: “After careful evaluation, Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc. (“ENRGI”) has come to the difficult decision to close 39 underperforming restaurants, effective Tuesday, February 24, 2015.” 

Hawaii: A month after shutting down their Kihei, Kona and Hilo stores, Hilo Hattie declared chapter 11 bankruptcy, for the second time in seven years.  The new owners blame the bad economy saying “…our plan was finding a retail footprint that fit today’s market, and that has proven elusive.”  The lease on their Nimitz store is now for sale.

Louisiana: The Pelican State’s Secretary of State Tom Schedler said he is laying off 24 museum employees and reducing operating hours for state run museums in April.  A special election is being postponed until October.  It’s part of a plan to cut state spending by $61-million.  Politicians are blaming crashing tax revenues from the petroleum industry caused by ‘low’ oil prices.

Massachusetts: In Tauton, the last old school silversmith,  191 years old (surviving the Long Depression, Civil War, Great deflationary Depression and numerous recessions) Reed & Barton now chapter 11 bankrupt busted and shutting down in June!  The CEO said insurance industry written Obamacare was the final straw as it caused their employee retirement plan costs to skyrocket to as much as $18-million per year: “It absolutely killed us….We hung on as long as we could…it’s been all-consuming for the past year and half.”-Tim Riddle

Nebraska:  After 37 years, the new owner of Duggan’s Pub (formerly Sam’s Pub) announced it will be shutdown in March. The new owner is a property developer.

New Jersey: Camden based iconic soup maker Cambells announced it will begin massive job destruction in order to cut $200-million over the next three years. For proof there is no economic recovery, company administrators say company profits have been crashing steadily since 2008, with no end in sight: “Like other companies in our industry, we’re contending with now not just the long term impact of the Great Recession on consumer purchasing behavior, or the increasingly complex public dialog when it comes to food, or the regulatory environment for food.”-Denise Morrison, ceo

New York:  In NYC and Jericho, Too Big to Jail Bank of America Global Tech issued a WARN saying 88 people will become unemployed in May.  Too Big to Jail Capital One announced it will shutdown its Jamesport office in April, admitting the economy is so bad it is forcing them to work “as efficiently as possible”.   Advertising company Leo Burnett announced they will join the exodus from New York and shutdown their NYC office in order to focus on “the broader global network.”

Ohio: In Mansfield, School Specialty revealed it had laid off an undisclosed number of employees last week, this after they claimed to be investing $7-million into a new school supply warehouse.

Pennsylvania: Comcast cable company shutting down three service centers sometime after the first of April.  Customers who walk in their payments in Dallas, Duryea and Scranton will have to find another way to make their payments.  No indication how many jobs will be lost, but Comcast says the shutdowns are precisely because fewer people have been making their payments in person.

Tennessee: A 2014 University of Memphis study stated that only seven of the 77 low income areas of the city have full service grocery stores, now that might be down to six; a Kroger Food & Drugs on the 4000 block of American Way shutdown with short notice and without explaining why.  In Rogersville after 63 years the city’s only furniture-appliances store, Otis Home Center, shutdown.  The third generation owners blame recent battles with cancer: “One thing my father told me shortly before he passed away was, ‘Phillip if you want to travel and see the world and go on some trips…..you need to do it before you get in the shape I am and can’t go nowhere.'”-Phillip Henard

Texas: Marathon Oil announced they will layoff as many as 4-hundred mainly “above-the-field and support services personnel” by the end of 2015!  France based petroleum equipment maker Technip reduced its fleet of Texas based oil service ships from 36 down to 21. It’s part of the company’s 18-hundred job cuts worldwide!  Norway based oil service company Aker Solutions issued a warning from its Houston office saying “As we see it today, these challenges will continue through 2015 and possibly also into 2016.”  Their first action to deal with the “challenges” is to layoff 3-hundred people in their home country of Norway!  Will their ops in Texas be next?   Baker Hughes laid off 58 people at its Kilgore ops. Don’t blame oil prices, blame the takeover by Halliburton, one clue is that Baker Hughes told city administrators that the layoffs were “permanent”.

Vermont: In Burlington, the owners of Apple Mountain gift store shut it down saying “Unfortunately, the costs associated with running a locally owned business here has outpaced our means. We will truly miss you.”   Taxsucking military armor supplier Plasan announced they will shutdown their Bennington ops in July, 62 full-time jobs lost: “Unfortunately, economic realities in the defense industry have forced us to consolidate our facility in Michigan.”

Wisconsin: In Greenfield, after more than 30 years Naked Furniture will shutdown at the end of April.  The owner says the store was profitable but sales have been steadily crashing and he wants to get out while he’s ahead: “There’s money here and there’s profit here, but the future is a question.”-Eric Lois

Almost four years after the Davenport, Iowa, Kmart shutdown U-Haul has approached city administrators with a plan to turn it into a storage facility.

In Seattle, Washington, the owner of a building that once housed a Sears store says Sears Holdings is blocking his ability to renovate the now vacant 150-thousand square feet store.   Apparently Sears vacated the building even though there is still time left on the lease, and they’re still making payments, so until the lease expires the property owner is stuck.  Reports say the building was originally constructed by Union Pacific specifically for Sears & Roebuck, so that railroad employees would have somewhere to spend their money.

The Economic Development Director of Janesville, Wisconsin, has revealed that city administrators are about to shell out taxpayer bucks to a property developer to rebuild an abandoned 46 years old Kmart: “They would be on a fast track to move forward based on some financial provisions they’re proposing.”-Gail Price

Ohio losing at least five CPS Operations owned Sears Appliance & Hardware stores, and possibly two Abtroit Limited Partnership owned Sears Appliance & Hardware stores by May (or until merchandise is sold out).   They employ about 15 to 20 people each.  Apparently the franchise owners of Sears Appliance & Hardware did not want to renew their contracts with Sears Holdings.  It should be noted that the more I look the more Sears Appliance & Hardware shutdown articles I find.

CPS Operations apparently took over the Sears Appliance & Hardware operation from Sears Holdings, according to some reports.

Idaho: Lewiston Sears (at least 60 jobs lost), Rexburg Kmart (63 jobs lost), Chubbuck Pine Ridge Mall Sears shutdown by the end of October/beginning of November 2014 (the remaining 28 jobs lost). Across the street, in Pocatello, the property where the Kmart is located has a “pad site available” sign, posted ever since the Kmart bankruptcy. The Kmart building takes up most of the ‘pad’. Latest news from inside sources say Sears Holdings will not comment on any plans to expand the small amount of Craftsman products already being sold at the Kmart, or shift the Kenmore products line, from the closing Chubbuck Sears to the Pocatello Kmart. In fact all plans for the Pokey Kmart are in a ‘holding pattern’.

Sears & Kmart closing update, 02 March 2015: Lampert calls crashing sales “upbeat” then announces shutdown of 300 more stores! Sears Canada makes money shutting down stores, & yes, taxpayers are screwed over again!

“These stores didn’t close because they were poor performing. In fact they were good performing stores, they were good markets for us. The value for early termination of our lease that we were being offered was significant. In round numbers probably 20 times what we could have made in net profit over the course of that time!”-Vincent Power, vice-president of corporate communication Sears Canada

In Canada another Sears shutdown, this time the 24 years old Sears in the Markville Shopping Center in Markham, Ontario. At least 147 jobs lost!  Local news reports revealed that Sears Canada did not shutdown the store because of bad sales, in fact the store had good sales. Just like in the United States, Sears is actually making big money by selling-off their store leases.

Sears Holdings claims their Shop Your Way program now accounts for 72% of Sears and Kmart sales.  However, for the 4th quarter 2014 Sears still lost $159-million USD!  Kmart experienced a 2% drop in sales.  Eddie Lampert called the end of year results “…an upbeat note.” But wait there’s more! Now try and understand Lampert’s latest plan to make money for Sears Holdings; he wants to shutdown and sell off  3-hundred more stores, then ‘rent back’ those store spaces from whomever the new owner is!  Get it?  Bottom line is it means even more job destruction.

A property developer has presented plans to turn the former Clifton Park Kmart, in New York, into a new Town Center with more than 2-hundred apartments as well as retail shops. It’s estimated to cost $50-million, I bet some of that cost will be paid by local taxpayers, after all the main reason developers present such grand plans to city councils to get some kind of tax incentive (and it follows trends elsewhere).

In Wyandotte, Michigan, a vacant Sears Auto Center is being renovated at state and local taxpayer expense.  The renovation is estimated to cost taxpayers $1-million & 20-thousand, plus the property developer is getting 15 years worth of tax breaks valued at $2-million (12 years $1.6-million commercial facilities exemption and 15 years $325-thousand neighborhood enterprise zone exemption), plus more tax breaks.  And after all that only 56 permanent jobs are expected to be created!  How do you like that workers of Michigan?  You’re actually paying your future employer!

Virginia losing a large Kmart in May.  Local news reports indicate the shutdown was a surprise to management, who posted a sign on the door saying they were being shutdown due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

On 21 January 2015, majority stock holder Fairholme (owned by Jewish vulture capitalist Bruce R. Berkowitz) dumped 117-thousand shares of Sears Holdings stocks! Fariholme made more than $5-million off the dump!  Then on 26 February 2015, Fairholme bought back 15-thousand shares, a fraction of what it dumped in January.

Wisconsin: West Baraboo Sears (at least 40 jobs lost, local village officials say the store generated 3% of local tax collections), Rice Lake Kmart (about 71 jobs lost), Brookfield Kmart (56 jobs lost), Racine’s Regency Mall Sears (52 jobs lost), Fort Atkinson Kmart (51 jobs lost), Greenfield Kmart (107 jobs lost), Portage Kmart (78 jobs lost) and Hales Corner (129 jobs lost), Chippewa Falls Kmart (79 jobs lost), Menomonie Kmart (at least 50 jobs lost), Ashwaubenon Kmart recently revealed now owned by Green Bay Packers, will be torn down (80 jobs lost), Shawano Kmart (55 jobs lost), Fond du Lac Sears (42 jobs lost), Glendale Sears store & Auto Center (86 jobs lost), Janesville Kmart (70 jobs lost), Glendale Sears Rebuild center (67 jobs lost), Sheboygan Sears & Auto Center (at least 31 jobs lost), Eau Claire Kmart (93 jobs lost), Plymouth Kmart (59 jobs lost before Xmas), Sheboygan Sears Rebuild Center (30 jobs lost).

On top of that, Sears Holdings sold stores to General Growth Properties (GGP), of which it has been reported that most of those stores will be closed.

U.S. Job Losses & Store Closings, 17 – 18 February 2015: “The hits just keep on coming!” Texas police state kills more jobs! “It’s all over!” More lies about oil industry layoffs!

Incomplete list of publicly announced layoffs & shutdowns:

California: Dreamworks Animation issued several WARNs saying 517 people working in Redwood City and Glendale will become unemployed in April! In Modesto, Obama Care forcing rehab center operator Centrex to issue a WARN saying they are shutting down by August, 163 jobs lost!   In Bellevue just north of San Francisco, internet company Zwillow took over internet based real estate company Trulia.  Trulia issued a layoff WARN, saying 140 people (local news reports say 157 people, but a Wall Street Journal report said as many as 350 people will be affected) will become jobless by the end of April!    The publishers of 7×7 magazine says they will halt hardcopy publication in March and focus on a digital edition only. Denair Unified School District warned it must eliminate at least 16 teachers, shutdown classes and are even offering a bonus to anybody who’ll take early retirement.  Administrators blame ongoing DSS (what I call Disapearing Student Syndrome).

Connecticut: Legal drugs maker Boehringer Ingelheim announced they will layoff about 90 employees at their Ridgefield drugs factory.  Administrators blame a 5.4% drop in their 2014 sales, however, the truth might be that the company got fined by the state and federal governments and has to pay $650-million USD for lying about its drug Pradaxa.

Florida: ASG Software now chapter 11 bankrupt busted.  Based on statements made by the administrators the company isn’t in trouble, they just don’t want to pay their debts.  Whathousing market recovery?  In Jacksonville, Too Big to Jail Bank of America Mortgage issued a layoff WARN saying 69 people will be laid off in April.  In Tampa, Obama Care forcing pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts to issue a WARN saying 216 people will become unemployed in April! In Weston, Obama Care forcing wholesale legal drugs pusher Vital Pharmaceuticals to issue a WARN saying 143 people will become jobless in April!  In Orlando, logistics company Southeastern Container issued a WARN saying 70 people will be laid off between April and December.  In Fort Lauderdale, after 13 years the owners of Las Olas Boutique announced they must shutdown in March, because the evil landlord jack up their rent.

Georgia: Capitol City Bank failed, assets seized by FDIC and turned over to First Citizens Bank.  Hallmark announced it is shutting down its Litho-Krome printing ops in Midland.  Hallmark took over Litho-Krome in 1979.  Litho-Krome is 82 years old, having survived the Great (deflationary) Depression and numerous recessions, but not this so called ‘recovery’ from the Great Recession.

Hawaii: After only three years The Grove in Kailua was discovered to be shutdown.  News reports indicate the restaurant actually shutdown back in December, no comment from the owners.

Illinois: In Rogers Park, the La Cazuela restaurant now for sale.  Deerfield based supplier of office products and janitorial supplies United Stationers announced it is changing its name and killing jobs, despite increased sales.  Company administrators called the bad economy “rapidly changing industry dynamics”, saying it is forcing them to consolidate operations which will result in layoffs.   In Normal, after 25 years the owner of Babbitt’s Books says he must shutdown in June: “I always thought I’d be able to, someplace down the line, sell the store and retire….There’s been a societal shift from reading …..”-Brian Simpson

Louisianna: At Barksdale Air Force Base, the Reserve unit 307th Red Horse Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron to shutdown by the end of 2015, at least 200 jobs affected!  It’s one of six Reserve units belonging to the 622nd Civil Engineer Group that will be shutdown!

Michigan: In Farmington Hills, the Hunter’s Square Michaels Arts & Crafts store shutdown. Interestingly local news media reported that administrators at the company’s corporate HQ claimed to be unaware of the shutdown, even though a sign on the store’s door clearly stated “We’re closing this location only.”  New York based Digital First Media is now selling off several Great Lake State newspapers and bribing employees to voluntarily quit!

New Mexico:  In Clovis, after more than 40 years iconic and influential Joe’s Boot Shop shutdown without warning.  The family was a major sponsor of community events and many people are shocked.  Local news media said the current owner (the grandson of the founders) would only say “It’s all over!”  The University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research warned of worsening housing market conditions because more than 2-thousand 5-hundred people fled the state in 2014! 

New York: More proof the internet is not the cause of the demise of brick-n-mortar stores.  In NYC, web site design company CreatetheGroup issued a shutdown WARN for May, 38 internet jobs lost. The Nicholas A. Rango Healthcare Facility has been sold to Allure Group, WARN indicates 158 of the 204 employees will become jobless!   In Pittsford, service provider for government-sponsored benefits programs such as the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, Medicare and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Maximus issued a WARN saying at least 54 people will become jobless due to the failure to win an Obama Care contract.  General Electric reduced battery production and is bribing employees at its Schenectady factory to quit.  GE administrators admit they want to get rid of at least 50 employees.

Ohio: United Pet Group shutting down its newly acquired Iams HQ, at least 55 jobs lost.    Hallmark announced it is shutting down its Litho-Krome printing ops in Columbus.  The shutdown is expected by September, at least 50 jobs lost.  After more than 70 years the owners of Springboro Hardware announced they will shutdown in March.  They blamed a crash in customer traffic on the shutdown of the nextdoor IGA grocery store.  Food maker General Mills confirming it will shutdown its 56 years old New Albany Pillsbury dough factory by the middle of 2016, at least 440 jobs will be lost! General Mills and worker’s union administrators claim the employees will get a generous severance package if they stay on until the shutdown, and could even make 26 bucks per hour. The shutdown will also affect 70 contracted workers at the nearby package making factory Sonoco (they make the tube cans for the Pillsbury Poppin-Fresh dough products).

Oklahoma: One year old Enable Midstream Partners laid off 2-hundred people, blaming “volatile” petroleum prices!   It’s more likely because Enable Midstream Partners was created a year ago by merging parts of two oil service companies (Enogex Midstream and CenterPoint Energy).  Mergers always result in layoffs.

Tennessee: France based energy company Alstom laid off 1-hundred people at its Chattanooga electricity factory!  Administrators blamed he bad economy and increased global competition.

Texas: The ass-hole city council of Cedar Park forced the Discount Electronics store to shutdown because the store’s sign does not comply with the latest city laws! The CEO of the chain store was actually threatened with arrest!   In Abilene, McMurry University announced it will layoff 12 people in May, blaming DSS (what I call Disapearing Student Syndrome).  Baker Hughes (now owned by Halliburton) shutdown its Alice ops, at least 51 jobs lost. Don’t blame oil prices, blame the takeover by Halliburton.  In Angelina County,  T&B Construction Services laid off 20 people, blaming the oil industry for reducing the number of planned construction projects.   Local Angelina County judge Wes Suiter summed up the bad economy thusly: “The hits just keep on coming!”

Washington DC:  What housing market recovery?  The U.S. Department of Commerce reports new U.S. home construction fell 2% from December 2014 to January 2015.  Home sales fell 6.7%.

Wisconsin: In Milwaukee, Love Handle Restaurant shutdown. Apparently the economy is so bad in The Badger State the owners decided to “head back to Indiana to start on new projects.”

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) doesn’t count the hundreds of layoffs involving less than 50 people each, in its mass layoff reports. It also doesn’t count all the little ‘mom & pop’ businesses that shutdown. It doesn’t count people who get a severance for being laid off.

U.S. Food Crisis, February 2015: No more Poppin’ Fresh? Boston Weak property owners more destructive than terrorists! No more Chiquita bananas? USDA warns of becoming dependent on food from other countries?

Incomplete list of announced United States food supply shutdowns for the month of February, 2015: Many food suppliers/distributors are consolidating operations and killing jobs due to the collapsing grocery store and restaurant industries, as well as rising costs of food production.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) February Outlook for U.S. Agricultural Trade shows continuing declines in U.S. exports to other countries “…down $2.0 billion from the November forecast and $11.0 billion from fiscal 2014.”  The amount of food being imported into the U.S. is growing “…at a record $119.0 billion, up $3.0 billion from November, and $10.0 billion higher than in fiscal 2014.”  As a result U.S. trade surplus is “…down from $43.3 billion in fiscal 2014…the smallest surplus since fiscal 2007.”

Arizona: In Green Valley, after 14 years The Old Time Butcher Shop announced it will shutdown in March.  The owners say a 60% drop in business is a sign to spend more time with their great-grand-children.

California:  Safeway grocery chain issued a WARN saying another 213 jobs will be lost in April! Blame Cerberus Albertsons for the hostile takeover of Safeway.   Food and coffee supplier Farmer Brothers issued a WARN saying they will shutdown in Torrance, 271 jobs lost by May! In Santa Monica, International Coffee & Tea issued a WARN saying they will shutdown in April, 69 jobs lost. In Fresno, historic Tailspin Tommy’s Aerodrome Eatery shutdown, local news media said “money ran out”.  In Bakersfield, Caesar’s Italian Delicatessen shutdown: “February 13th will be our last day…..We first opened our doors in June of 1971…..It’s been a profound honor to serve everyone who has walked through our doors over the years and this is an incredibly sad day for us.”-owners facebook posting

Colorado: Lakewood based Einstein Bros Bagels announced it will shutdown 39 stores across the United States, apparently due to lack of sales: “After careful evaluation, Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc. (“ENRGI”) has come to the difficult decision to close 39 underperforming restaurants, effective Tuesday, February 24, 2015.”

Connecticut: Ohio based grocery store XPect Discounts announced it will shutdown all remaining stores in The Constitution State by the end of 2015! Local news reports say no ‘official’ reason was given.

Delaware: In Bethany Beach, the Harris Teeter grocery store shutdown, 39 jobs lost. This comes after company administrators said they were going to expand the grocery chain.

Illinois: In Chicago, after 18 years Carmichael’s Steakhouse announced it will shutdown in March, blaming the greedy property owner.  The property was sold off and will be used to build an apartment complex.  The restaurant manager is pissed, as his business was good: “It’s unfortunate that we have to close when we’re still doing really good business.”-Ben Sawyer

Indiana:  After seven years Richmond chocolate shop Ghyslain Bistro shutdown.  The owner said he’s focusing on his stores in Kentucky and internet sales.

Kentucky:  Remke Markets announced they could not afford to renew their lease on their Newport grocery store.  The store will shutdown at the beginning of March, 58 jobs lost.

Massachusetts:  It may have survived the Marathon bombing but it can’t survive the Boston Weak economy; the iconic FORUM Bar & Restaurant shutdown, the owner blames evil property owners for killing it off: “After the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon….four long months of reconstruction…bureaucracy…the current real estate climate on Boylston Street has motivated FORUM’s landlord to raise rent…nearly three times our current rate…makes it financially impossible…” 

Michigan: Ciolino Fruit and Vegetable Market shutdown its Monroe store, saying it wasn’t worth it to renew the lease.  In Kalamazoo, with little notice to employees the Harding’s grocery store on Howard Street was sold off and is being shutdown, 60 jobs lost.   In Northville, decades old Starting Gate Saloon restaurant shutdown and was sold-off.  In Mount Morris, after 43 years meijer department and grocery store shutdown.  Administrators basically said the sales were not high enough to justify renewing the lease.  News reports say the building will be torn down, but no other info was available, 190 jobs lost!

Missouri: A major advertising company in Saint Louis laid off 15 people. Administrators of Osborn Barr blame crashing orders for advertisements from its primary client; the farm industry.

Nebraska: After 19 years the Herbs & More store shutdown.  The owner is retiring due to massive competition.  After 37 years, the new owner of Duggan’s Pub (formerly Sam’s Pub) announced it will be  shutdown in March.  The new owner is a property developer.   Italy-Netherlands based New Holland farm equipment maker CNH Industrial announced they will layoff 136 U.S. citizens at their Grand Island factory by the end of July! Company administrators blame the bad global economy for crashing sales.

New Jersey: Camden based iconic soup maker Cambells announced it will begin massive job destruction in order to cut $200-million USD over the next three years.  For proof there is no economic recovery, company administrators say company profits have been crashing steadily since 2008, with no end in sight: “Like other companies in our industry, we’re contending with now not just the long term impact of the Great Recession on consumer purchasing behavior, or the increasingly complex public dialog when it comes to food, or the regulatory environment for food.”-Denise Morrison, ceo

New York: In West Point, Land O’Frost announced it will shutdown its recently acquired Wimmer’s Meats factory by Autumn.  Company administrators claim they had plans to operate the factory for years to come, but the economy is worse than they thought, 125 jobs lost!  In Fredonia, food company ConAgra-The Carriage House issued a WARN saying they will shutdown in May, 423 jobs lost! They also revealed the layoffs actually began back in October!

North Carolina:  The new Brazil based owners of iconic Chiquita is shutting down the Charlotte HQ beginning in April, between 262 and 350 jobs lost!  State and local administrators are demanding Chiquita pay back all the tax incentives it got.  Brazilian Cutrale and Safra group took over Chiquita late last year.   In Charlotte, famous chef Emeril announced he is shutting down his e2 emeril’s eatery and e2GO in April: “The restaurant was never able to achieve the volume projected…”-facebook statement

Pennsylvania:  Conshohocken based Saladworks now chapter 11 bankrupt busted and up for sale.  Administrators claim the bankruptcy shouldn’t affect their more than 100 restaurants.  The bankruptcy is blamed on internal fighting between top brass.  O’Hara based Giant Eagle owned Good Cents Grocery shutting down all eight stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio, in March.  Administrators with Giant Eagle blamed the bad economy for the failure of their Good Cents Grocery chain.  Some of the Good Cents Grocery stores had been open for only one year, replacing Valu King stores!  Each store has about 35 employees.

South Dakota: Michigan based grocery store owner SpartanNash announced they will shutdown their Rapid City food distribution center in April, 49 jobs lost.  Company administrators say the bad economy is forcing them to consolidate warehouses.

Tennessee: A 2014 University of Memphis study stated that only seven of the 77 low income areas of the city have full service grocery stores, now that might be down to six; a Kroger Food & Drugs on the 4000 block of American Way, in Memphis, shutdown with short notice and without explaining why.

Virginia: In Martinsville, the owners of 50 years old Snow’s Sandwich Shop say the bad economy is forcing them to shutdown at the end of March, unless somebody loaded with cash can take it over.  In Arlington Heights, Panera Bread shutdown: “For 15 years, the Panera Bread bakery-cafe on Evergreen Street has been privileged to serve our neighbors in downtown Arlington Heights. With the expiration of our lease, we have decided to close this location on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.” 

Washington:   The owner of Boat Street Cafe says she will shut it down in May, she still has two other restaurants.  More proof you can’t blame the internet for stealing business from brick-n-mortars!  Internet based ‘organic’ food promoter Farmstr shutdown.  Ignorant company administrators blamed competitors like California based GoodEggs, which if you read my January 2015 Food Crisis report you’ll see even GoodEggs is in trouble!  In other words, it’s the overall bad economy not competition.
