Which came first, the Apache or the Mustang?

NA-73X, North American project 73 experimental. North American Aviation photo.

This war-time advertisement shows a NA-73/NA-83, Mustang Mark 1, built for the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force.  The Mustang Mark 1 was put into production, supposedly in 1941, with first deliveries to the British in February 1942.  The name Mustang was supposedly the idea of one of the British officials overseeing the purchase of the NA-73/83.

Photo credited to Alfred T. Palmer, dated October 1942, via the U.S. Library of Congress.

Notice the wing of this Allison engined P-51/Mustang Mark 1.  The wing shape/armament changed from variant to variant.  Many model kits of different Mustang variants incorrectly use the same P-51D wing.

USAAF (U.S. Army Air Force) and RAF (Royal Air Force) ground crews go over a P-51 Mustang Mark 1, Margate, England, United Kingdom, 01APR1943.

NACA photo dated 1944.

Photo of a NACA model of a 20mm gun armed Packard-Merlin engined P-51B.  This is odd as the model has the 20mm guns of the P-51 Apache/Mustang Mark 1A, yet has the four bladed propeller of the P-51B Mustang/ Mustang Mark 3.  This is the XP-51B prototype. Back then NASA was NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics).

North American Aviation (NAA) employees build a large scale model of the future P-51D(?), at the company’s Inglewood, California, location.

Brand new 20mm gun armed P-51 Apache (NA-91, for North American model 91), over the mountains of Southern California.  Strangely, what the British called the Mustang Mark 1A was ordered in July 1940, before the Mustang Mark 1!  At this point, the U.S. called the P-51 the Apache, the United Kingdom called it the Mustang.  Eventually the U.S. changed their name for the P-51, and all subsequent P-51 variants, to Mustang.  The recon version of NA-91 was called F-6A.

Photo credited to Alfred T. Palmer, dated October 1942, via the U.S. Library of Congress.

Right-off the Inglewood assembly line, brand new P-51s, supposedly in October 1942.  The information with the photo calls them P-51As, yet you can clearly see the mounts for 20mm guns, which the A version did not use. P-51As (NA-99) used wing mounted .50 caliber guns (12.7mm).

NA-99, P-51A, Mustang Mark 2, with a direction finding loop on its spine.

Orders for the NA-99/Mustang Mark 2s were placed in the middle of 1942 , the official ‘first flights’ of P-51As began in February 1943. Recon versions of NA-99 were called F-6B.

In this photo of a Mustang Mark 2 (P-51A) you can see the earlier Mustangs had very small radiator air intakes.

A Royal Air Force A-36A Apache, the identifier are the dive brakes on the wings.

In April 1942, the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) ordered the NA-97, a ‘Mustang’ designed specifically for ground attack missions.  The USAAF designated it as the A-36 Apache/Invader, to differentiate from the P-for-pursuit P-51 Mustangs.

A-36A Apache/Invaders in 1943.

An A-36A (?) minus the underwing pylons for bombs. USAAF photo.

This is not a P-51D.  In late 1942, a P-51B (note the wing) was modified with the bubble canopy, and exhaust manifolds, that would be used on the P-51D Mustang Mark 4.

Another non-P-51D(?), this time with totally straight leading edged wings, but with the six .50 cals mounted in the wings, as well as bomb and rocket pylons. It is the structurally different P-51H, which first flew in 1945, however, the info with the photo claimed it is a P-51D.

NACA photo dated September 1943.

In 1943, NACA used modified Mustang Mark 1s (notice the empty .50 cal gun throughs in the nacelle) to test laminar wing designs and called the experimental planes (two of them) the XP-51 Mustang.  However, there were many ‘XP-51’s, such as the XP-51Bs which were used in the U.S. to test the Packard license built Rolls Royce Merlin motor.

NACA photo, wing experiment, 1944.

By July 1944, NACA claimed its XP-51s were the oldest Mustangs in existence.

The information with the photo calls it an ‘air flow direction vane’, attached to the top of a NACA XP-51D wing, but look close, it is actually a ‘semispan’ (cut in half length-wise) model of a supersonic rocket plane.

NACA photo, 25JUL1945.

July 1945, the final production version of the Mustang actually came out at the end of World War Two, but never saw combat.  The P-51H was a lighter weight long-range version of the P-51D, it is structurally different from the P-51D.

This is supposed to simulate the 1S91 SURN radar for the 2K12 Kub (NATO code name SA-6 Gainful) missile system.  It’s made mainly of steel and aluminum.

The 266th also used a real radar to simulate enemy radar signals.

Southeast Idaho Pandemic Road-Trip

Washed and waxed and ready to go!

On 23 June 2020, perhaps too much self-restricting pandemic lockdown (I say “self-restricting” as most of us in Eastern Idaho are not adhering to CoViD-19 lockdown, and even the local Sheriff departments refuse to enforce such things) forced me to hit the road for a scenic road-trip from Chubbuck to Bear Lake, Idaho, in my 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT-8.  I was accompanied by one of my daughters, Aryssa May Hutchins (who took 90% of the photos), and Andrew ‘Bulletproof Family Photos’ Erickson.

Aryssa says there’s plenty of room in the backseat.

No Crouching Tiger here.

Heading south.

Immediately I noticed how green everything is, especially since it’s the end of June.   Between 2011 and 2013 I drove courier routes all across Eastern Idaho, including to Montpelier near Bear Lake, and by June everything was bone dry and brown.  2012 was the year the south end of the city of Pocatello burned (June 2012: POCATELLO BURNING! EVACUATIONS! SOUTHEAST IDAHO BURNING! BANNOCK COUNTY BANS FIREWORKS, DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY!), it was a busy fire year.

A lot has changed since then; my children all became adults and moved away to the evil metro-ville called Boise, my house was paid-off the same year I lost my Mail Handler job at the U.S. Postal Service’s Gateway Station (I tried reapplying online as a Clerk but got an instant message saying I wasn’t ‘qualified’ to apply for that position) and apparently my age is keeping me from getting hired by any of the local employers I’ve applied at thus forcing me to live off my children’s ‘inheritance’ (ha, fortunately they’re all financially better-off than I was at their ages), my parents died which in turn forced me to realize I wasn’t getting any younger and I had not fulfilled one of my personal promises to acquire a muscle car (having sold-off my muscle car projects in the early 1980s due to the skyrocketing costs of becoming a spouse and parent) thus providence led me to a one-of-a kind (for Eastern Idaho) second-hand Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with 6-speed manual transmission and low mileage.  The original owner was forced to sell due to a back surgery that left her unable to engage the clutch pedal without pain.  Ironically she bought the Challenger brand new from the Dodge dealer in Pocatello for the same reasons I wanted to buy it; loss of relatives reminding her that she was not getting any younger, and reminiscing about her young adult days driving muscle cars in the 1970s (yes, many women owned and drove their own muscle cars back in the days when feminists were burning their bras for ‘equality’).

Cache National Forest

Face masks are mandatory!

U.S. National Forest Service’s Minnetonka Cave (aka Caverns), be careful, the steps and handrails in the cavern are wet and slick as ice.  Also, you better be in shape, there’s a lot of steep climbing and wearing the face-masks makes you feel like you’re going to suffocate.

Minnetonka supposedly means Falling Water, or Great Water.  There is a lot of water coming down inside the cave, through earthquake fault lines that run through the cave ceiling.

The tour guide tried to convince me that I was looking at Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Statue of Liberty?

Bring your neon-black light flash light, these rock are radioactive (high phosphorus content)!

They call it Stairway to Heaven, I calls it Stairway OF Hell!

Can you see the petrified Hypno-Toad?

Some bats were fluttering around, the tour guide seemed concerned.

I survived, but wait, this isn’t where I parked the car!

I always regret bringing a jacket, I end up soaked with sweat.  The cave is a constant 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 Celsius), but you wouldn’t know it because you overheat climbing up and down the very steep stairs.

There appears to be some faces in the rock-face of this outcrop above us.

Rock spirits of Minnetonka!

We hadn’t planned on going to Bear Lake but its bright blue water beckoned us as we came down off the mountain. We’re now suffering with solar induced radiation poisoning (sunburn), in other words we got fried.

“I gotta rock!”

Arriving at the North Beach of Bear Lake we discovered it was packed.  After paying the Idaho State Parks $5 parking fee at the gate on the west entrance, I drove all the way to the east end to find a parking spot.  Being Idahoans we counted license plates, one or two vehicles with Idaho plates, at least three with Oregon plates, at least 90% of the vehicles had Utah plates, I facetiously hope we don’t get sick with all those domestic foreigners around.   Most of the beach area was wall-to-wall people and despite ‘the age of CoViD-19’ nobody was wearing masks or ‘social distancing’, but what we should have done was protect ourselves from the Sun.

Gulliver goes renegade on the tiny Lilliputians!

Bear Lake’s North Beach is shallow, you can walk out for a while with the water getting no higher than your mid-thigh.  Some spots are soft sand while other areas are rocky.

Speaking of getting fried, we got hungry and headed back to a row of locally run tourist shops in the tiny town of Saint Charles, including North Beach Burgers that sells ‘gourmet’ burgers and shakes. I got the elk meat burger, Andrew got the bacon-black & blue-burger, Aryssa got the standard bacon cheeseburger, and we split a huckleberry shake.

Goes off every hour.

On the way back to Chubbuck we stopped in Soda Springs to refuel the car (it had just a little more than half a tank when we started the road-trip), and with The Fates on our side, hit the ‘captive’ (human-made) Geyser as it went off.

In the past I’ve seen people collecting this sulfur rich water for drinking purposes!

Soda Springs also claims to have Idaho’s oldest pharmacy, Eastman Drug, where we found this old 1950s era Mack firetruck.

Interstate-15 has a maximum passenger vehicle speed of 80 miles per hour (128 kilometers per hour) within Idaho, but once you take the Soda Springs turnoff the state highway speed is maxed at 65 mph (104 kph) with lots of drops to 35 and even 25 mph (56-40 kph) going through the many small towns along the way.  My 425 horsepower 6.1 Liter (372 cubic inches) hemi V8 managed to average 23 miles per gallon, something my early 1970s muscle car projects (with larger 6.2 L/383 ci and 7.2 L/440 ci motors pumping out less stock-factory horsepower) would be hard pressed to achieve even with the then 55 mph (88 kph) max speed limit on interstates, back then.

Idaho militia’s European deployment canceled, suddenly deployed to Middle East

Ostensibly the deployment of Idaho Army National Guard’s ‘Snake River’ 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team to Europe was canceled due to Coronavirus fears. Yet, seemingly without warning, Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing, and 190th Fighter Squadron, was suddenly deployed to ‘somewhere’ in the Middle East.

Idaho Air Guard’s A-10C Thunderbolt-2s fly alongside USAF F-15E Eagles from Mountain Home AFB, 15MAY2020.

124th personnel began deploying on 11MAY2020, but several Idaho A-10Cs took part in a supposed CoViD-19 morale boosting fly-over of Idaho cities, along with U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles from Mountain Home Air Force Base, on 15MAY2020.

The deployment, to an undisclosed location for an undisclosed amount of time, of more than 4-hundred personnel makes it the second largest deployment for the 124th Fighter Wing.

Idaho’s 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team, which includes personnel from Oregon, Montana and Nevada, was to deploy between 3-thousand to 4-thousand-4-hundred (depending on the news source) soldiers to take part in NATO’s Defender Europe 2020 wargames, but that was suddenly canceled in March due to CoViD-19.

The deployment would have made the 2020 Defender Europe wargames the third largest wargames in Europe since the end of the Cold War.  However, Defender Europe 2020 was not halted and just got the ‘green light’.

Between 09 February and 07 March 2020, the Idaho Air National Guard teamed up with the Gem County Sheriffs Department to call in A-10 air strikes near the town of Emmett, and conduct ‘backcountry’ ops against silly-vilians who’ve gone rebel.  (because apparently our government expects future combat ops to take place within the U.S., read statement by Staff Sergeant below)

Idaho Air National Guard photo by Airman First Class Taylor Walker, 09FEB2020.

Idaho’s 124th Security Forces Squadron also joined the hunt for terrorists (possibly those damn terrorists from California).

It was the first training scenario for the 124th ASOS involving horses, so they had to get trained up first: “We’re learning how to properly pack people and equipment onto horses so that if we’re ever in a situation where we can’t use normal methods of transportation, we can use the animals to assist. TACP units are joint providers of precision strike capabilities, and as the premier precision strike provider we have to be able to get in and get out of anywhere in the world at any time.”-Staff Sergeant Neil Mooney, 124th Air Support Operations Squadron

Hunting rebel terrorists in the mountains around Emmett, Idaho. Idaho Air National Guard photo by Senior Airman Joseph R. Morgan, 07MAR2020.

For those citizens who have a fear the government will turn inward upon its own population (and the fact that Idaho was the scene of the infamous Ruby Ridge incident where, after citizens were killed, the government was proved wrong in court) Staff Sergeant Mooney made this ominous statement: “…there’s also a stateside potential that we could be called up with immediate response authority to go into the backcountry, and our members need to know how to get around with available livestock…”

Idaho Air National Guard photo by Senior Airman Joseph R. Morgan, 07MAR2020.

The guy in the above pic is wearing silly-vilian clothing because he is playing the part of domestic terrorist (opposition forces, OpFor) using the dreaded AR-15/CAR-15/M16/M4 Mass-shooter Plinker. Apparently Idahoans who don’t like the government are now domestic terrorists, or, maybe it’s a ‘foreign’ terrorist from California who heard how great Idaho was?
