What housing market recovery? Too Big to Jail Bank of America laid off 3-thousand people in their mortgage division! 1200 were direct BoA employees, the others were contracted employees.
California: The 99 Cents Only Store chain laid off 160 people! Company officials blamed it on increased competition among dollar stores. In San Clemente, Treasures Discovered antique store shutdown. The owners said they were forced to sell their business to raise money for treatment for their daughter’s health problems.
Colorado: In Loveland, Anthology Book Company shutdown after 25 years in business. It was blamed on the bad economy, “just not generating enough revenue to sustain a presence”.
Florida: In Pensacola, after 38 years Addie’s House of Flowers shutdown.
Georgia: Phoebe Putney Health System laid off 124 people! Other jobs will be contracted out. Joel Wernick, president and CEO, blamed Obama Care: “Like other hospitals and health systems throughout the United States, Phoebe is facing a tidal wave of economic change. We’re dealing with an economy and a change in the healthcare industry over which we have limited control.”
Illinois: In West Frankfort, Coleman-Rhoads Furniture shutdown after 33 years in business. The property is now up for sale.
Indiana: The International School of Columbus shutdown. School officials blame the bad economy: “We’ve had to fund raise for the past four years and it’s just a never ending process for charter schools.”-Jonah Sims
Michigan: In Port Huron, tax sucker GMA Cover Corporation shutdown. It’s blamed on military spending cuts. 175 job lost!
New York: In Albany, DeJohn’s Restaurant & Pub shutdown. Legends Sports Lounge shutdown. The owner of the bars said cops were harassing him, forcing him to close two hours before other bars.
Pennsylvania: In Ligonier, Rosary Acres grocery store shutdown. The owners blame the bad economy: “After two and a half years, we did not make a profit. At some point we had to face reality.”-Rick Adams
Virginia: In Carytown, Moshi Moshi restaurant shutdown. In Woodbridge, Daks Grill shutdown.
Washington: Non-profit Visiting Nurse Home Care ended operations. 150 jobs lost! It’s blamed on government cuts to funding for the poor: “We were serving the poorest of the poor and there’s just not enough money in those programs to cover our overhead, to provide the administration of the program.”-Barry Meyers
West Virginia: Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races laid off an undisclosed number of employees: “It’s an unfortunate consequence of the economy.”-Al Britton, general manager
The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) doesn’t count the hundreds of layoffs involving less than 50 people each, in its mass layoff reports. It also doesn’t count all the little ‘mom & pop’ businesses that shut down.
