“Being in Idaho allows us to train in every environment. We can train in high desert and in the mountains, in every element. Whether we’re in deep snow or in the desert, our training will allow us to be sustainable, long term.”-Captain Luke Nelson, 124th FW Air Support Operations Squadron
From 08-12MAY2023, the Idaho Air National Guard’s Air Support Operations Squadron (part of the 124th Fighter Wing [FW]) blasted away at the U.S. Air Force’s Saylor Creek Range.
They were using the M240B 7.62mm-NATO machinegun, and the Mk19 40mm grenade launcher, infantry weapons: “The fight doesn’t stop when the planes go away. When the jets are in the area, we’re talking to them. When they’re not, we cannot be deadweight. Anything we can do to improve lethality within any particular function of a unit is a win for everybody.”-Captain Luke Nelson, 124th FW Air Support Operations Squadron
The training is part of being a TACP/JTAC (Tactical Air Control Party/Joint Terminal Air Controller).
