Atlantic hurricane season begins early, again,1st WC-130J Hurricane Hunter launched!

Despite the Atlantic Hurricane Season not officially starting until June, on 16MAY2020 the U.S. Air Force Reserve launched its hurricane tracking WC-130J aircraft based at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi.

The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron is concerned about a possible developing tropical depression or storm near the Bahamas (on 16MAY2020 it was called Invest 90L).

On 17MAY2020, Invest 90L became Tropical Storm Arthur.  This is the sixth year in a row that a Tropical Storm developed in May.

During ‘invest’ flights the WC-130Js fly at low altitudes (500 to 1,500 feet, 152 to 457 meters) to determine if there is a closed circulation.  Once a system becomes a storm the WC-130Js fly at higher altitudes (5,000 to 10,000 feet, 1524 to 3048 meters), and fly through the eye of the storm several times during a mission. Dropsondes are launched from the aircraft into the storm, which then communicate with the National Hurricane Center via satellite link.  (What’s a storm tracking Dropsonde?)

Florida gets a new Combat King

Just in time for the 2020-2021 hurricane season, a lucky U.S. Air Force Reserve SAR (Search And Rescue) unit in Florida got a brand new HC-130J Super Hercules-Combat King-2.

The first HC-130J for USAF Reserves in Florida, takes off from its birthplace in Marietta, Georgia, 02APR2020.

FL-892 will call Patrick Air Force Base its home, cared for by the 39th Rescue Squadron-920th Rescue Wing.  They are the first, and so far only, Reserve SAR unit to get a new HC-130J.  (they do fly the older models of HC-130 SAR Hercules)

The HC-130J is one of nine versions of the C-130J series, specifically built for SAR and aerial refueling missions.

Video, HC-130Js operated by 23rd Wing out of Nellis AFB, Nevada, arrived at Moody AFB, Georgia, for up-load of equipment and supplies for SAR ops relating to the Hurricane Harvey disaster in 2017 (interesting how the new C-130Js with their new engines and six bladed props still sound like the old C-130s, well almost):

Video, a 23rd Wing HC-130J returns to its home on Nellis AFB, Nevada, after conducting SAR ops over Texas following the 2017 Hurricane Harvey disaster:

Dorian: How to evacuate thousands of U.S. Marines

On 03SEP2019, the threat of Hurricane Dorian forced Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, to start evacuating basic trainees.

Their new temp-home will be Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia.

The trainees packed their rucks, and were handed a box of rations, and told to “Get on the bus!”

Hundreds of contracted tour buses rolled in to take them to Georgia.

It’s actually easy to evac thousands of military personnel, they’re under orders, and the food and transportation are provided.  Realize how hard it is to get millions of silly-vilians to evacuate, without providing taxpayer funded food and transportation, or a place to go-to, before-hand.

I don’t know if this guy is yawning or yelling, but I’m sure there was a lot of hurry-up-and-wait.

Airborne Hurricane Hunters, when did it all start?

The first hurricane (typhoon) hunter was a pilot flying a Second World War T-6 Texan through the eye of a hurricane, on a dare!  Realizing that flying through a hurricane was doable, the U.S. Air Force set upon a long journey of modifying aircraft to collect weather data about hurricanes.

The first data collected, in 1944 by B-25 bombers (WB-25 Army Hurricane Reconnaissance Unit), is credited with saving hundreds of lives.  Prior to the development of airborne hurricane hunters, thousands of people in the United States died as a result of hurricanes, but after the use of flying weather trackers the average death toll dropped significantly.

Painting by Thomas Wojahn of a WB-50 of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Falcon Alpha Mission-1957.

Perhaps the name The Hurricane Hunters came from the the title of a book first published in 1955 about the U.S. military’s obsession with tracking hurricanes. Download your free copy here.

But it not just lives that are saved with the creation of airborne hurricane hunters, in this 2018 video report about the purpose of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron (Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi) it’s revealed that mass evacuations of the public cost one-million USD per mile of coastline!  Taxpayer costs can be reduced by providing accurate weather data to allow for more timely evacuation orders:

“I stressed after Hurricane Irma that we have to get our counterparts trained as well, because we’re going to need them. We knew that it was not enough to take on the mission with just the four of us.”-Master Sergeant Abea Balala, Florida Air National Guard

Army National Guard units are the typical bringers of disaster relief aid, unless roads are impassable and then the Air National Guard is used to airlift supplies into affected areas.

During Hurricane Irma relief efforts Florida Air National Guard Master Sergeant Abea Balala, and his four person team, noticed a major problem with the supplies they got from Army Guard units; while the supplies were packaged for transport by ground vehicles they were not in a condition to be shipped by air (or a lot of personnel had to be used to on & off-load one box at a time), meaning everything had to be re-palletized before being loaded on aircraft.  This was a major cause of slow delivery times.

My experience in both the U.S. Air Force and the Army National Guard revealed that Air Force units do not have the manpower to quickly palletize a lot of stuff on short notice, but Army units do.

In this pic of Hurricane Harvey relief notice how National Guard personnel are ‘bucket brigade-ing’ supplies, one box at a time, off the C-130

The ‘higher-ups’ liked the suggestion of Master Sergeant Abea Balala, and last week the Florida National Guard conducted a week-long air transport pallet buildup and cargo preparation course for Army units: “On the Joint Operations side, we’ve been working with the Air side a lot more over the last two years than we ever had. They’re actually part of what is called the ‘Joint Support Group’ … and we work together to coordinate everything throughout hurricane seasons. It means better response, it means better use of our resources. It means if we pack things right and move things right, supplies are going to get to them faster, cheaper, and ultimately may save lives.”-Captain Daniel Munzner, Florida Army National Guard

“TSR [Tropical Storm Risk] predicts Atlantic hurricane activity in 2018 will be slightly above the long-term norm and close to the last 10-year norm.”-Aon Benfield, University College London

Climate Forecast Applications Network predicts 80% chance of above ‘normal’ hurricane activity for 2018-19.

Colorado State University predicts no ‘El Niño’ developing, which usually prohibits hurricane development.

The Alabama National Guard is already prepping for the next hurricane season, and they’re starting out by using a giant map of The Yellowhammer State.

The plan is to synchronize the state militia with other Alabama Emergency Management responders before the next hurricane season.

This use of a large scale map, at Joint Force Headquarters in Montgomery, is called a Rehearsal of Concept.  Actual disaster drills will take place closer to hurricane season.
