Incomplete list of U.S. Mining/Industrial/Logistics job loss/shutdown announcements made in April 2017.
California: Solar panel installer HelioPower now chapter 11 bankrupt busted saying revenues are not enough to make the company’s debt payments. CEVA Logistics issued a layoff WARN for its Mira Loma ops, 99 jobs gone by the end of June. ‘Third party’ logistics company Railex issued a shutdown WARN for its Delano ops, 79 jobs lost by the end of June. Oil industry supplier Mastec North America issued a shutdown WARN for Hayward, 109 jobs lost by June! First Transit issued shutdown WARNs for its Oceanside and Pomona ops, more than 9-hundred jobs affected! In Oxnard, Arcturus Manufacturing shutting down, 32 jobs gone by September. Boeing issued yet more layoff WARNs, this time 66 jobs lost in June. Nelco Products issued a layoff WARN for its Fullerton operations, 62 jobs lost in June. The new owners of packaging company New-Indy TriPAQ issued layoff and shutdown WARNs, 68 jobs lost in June. What construction industry recovery? Flooring maker/seller Galleher shutting down its La Mirada ops, 32 jobs lost in June. Clothing maker/seller St. John Knits eliminating 130 factory jobs in Irvine, by the end of June!
Florida: Jacksonville based railroad company CSX continues job killing, this time at least 2-hundred jobs being eliminated! According to local news reports this is in addition to the approximate 1-thousand job cuts announced in February! Local news media pointed out that CSX administrators were giving out conflicting statements about the new layoffs, making them sound like they were part of the February announcement even though they also said those February job cuts were concluded in March. L-3 Crestview Aerospace laid off 130 people! The builder of aircraft interiors has been losing civilian and military contracts since 2007.
Illinois: In Galatia, American Coal Company suddenly laid off approximately 3-hundred people due to “adverse mining conditions” at its New Future Mine! What automotive industry recovery? Caterpillar shutting down its factory in Aurora, 8-hundred jobs lost by the end of 2018!
Iowa: What automotive industry recovery? Polaris shutting down its factory in Milford, 275 jobs lost by the end of the year due to consolidation of vehicle construction. Owner Revolution- Plastic Professionals issued a mass layoff WARN, 207 jobs gone by the end of June!
Michigan: In Livonia, 3-D printed industrial parts maker Moog-Linear AMS issued a layoff WARN, 40 jobs gone starting in June due to operations being moved out-of-state.
Montana: Warren Buffet owned rail company BNSF eliminating 55 jobs in Glendive. It’s blamed on crashing use of trains by the oil and coal industries.
New Jersey: In Wayne, Retail Logistics issued a WARN, 68 jobs gone by mid-June. What construction industry recovery? Window glass maker Pochet of America issued a shutdown WARN for Wayne, 30 jobs lost by the end of June.
New York: Auburn Armature issued a shutdown WARN for all its ops in The Empire State, more than 118 jobs gone by August due to the operations being sold-off! Carthage Specialty Paperboard furloughed 60 people for at least a week. Local news media say the company is behind on debt payments, and the company is refusing to answer questions from the employee’s union about possible plant shutdown. In Brooklyn, tile and building products company Soho Studio issued a shutdown WARN, 56 jobs lost in July due to operations being moved to New Jersey.
North Carolina: Parkdale Mills shutting down its underwear factory in Williamston, 95 jobs lost in June.
Ohio: What automotive industry recovery? ConForm Automotives issued a layoff WARN, 49 jobs gone in June “Due to a large loss of business….”
Pennsylvania: What automotive industry recovery? Harley-Davidson issued a layoff WARN, 118 people in Springettsbury Township will become unemployed by the end of July! Air Products let go another 11 employees, local news media reported that at one time the factory in Hanover Township once employed 2-hundred people, but is down to just 75. It’s blamed on crashing orders for liquefied natural gas heat exchangers. DME Company issued a WARN for its Youngwood ops, 61 jobs gone by June.
Tennessee: What automotive industry recovery? Alternator and electric motor maker Leroy-Somer issued a layoff WARN, 63 jobs gone by June. It’s blamed on crashing orders from Caterpillar.
Washington: Boeing issued layoff WARNs totaling 429 jobs! ‘Third party’ logistics company Railex issued a shutdown WARN for its Burbank ops, 88 jobs lost by the end of June.
Wisconsin: Broadwind Energy laying off an undisclosed number of people at its ops in Manitowoc, saying “a temporary pause in the market and orders in the Midwest” forced them to shutdown two weekend shifts. Acoustic and emission tech maker Babcock and Wilcox Universal issued a layoff WARN, 55 jobs lost by June. Graymont shutting down its lime kiln in Green Bay, 23 jobs lost in June due to the “continuing soft market”. Athletic apparel maker JanSport shutting down its factory in Appleton, 380 jobs lost due to the selling of JanSport’s licensed sports group business to a competitor!
