It must be noted that I started documenting these education shutdowns at the beginning of 2014. In that year I posted the reports biannually (every six months). In 2015 education cutbacks ramped up and I posted quarterly (every three months). For the past five months of 2016 there have been so many education cutbacks that I’ve posted a report every month!
Disappearing Students Syndrome (DSS): A phrase created by me to describe a phenomenon taking place across the United States, affecting both privately and publicly funded schools, from Kindergarten all the way through University levels.
Incomplete list of publicly announced education related layoffs & school shutdowns, May 2016:
Alaska: University of Alaska Fairbanks shutting down its agriculture extension offices in Anchorage and Sitka by October. It’s blamed on millions of dollars in state funding cuts, caused by crashing revenues from the oil industry.
Arizona: In Tempe, after 49 years the Student Book Center shutdown, the greedy property owner sold the property. Kingman Army Air Field Museum shutdown due to a dilapidated building that was built in 1942, and they can’t afford to fix. All museum owned assets are being put up for auction, surprisingly the auctioneer said the stuff was worth only $11-thousand USD! God powerless to stop his Illinois based Saint Xavier University from shutting down their Gilbert campus. Administrators say they are prepping for the possible halting of Illinois taxpayer funding for low income students.
California: In Santa Rosa, school bus contractor First Student eliminating 136 jobs by the end of June! In Yucca Valley, school bus contractor First Student laying off 76 people by the end of June.
Connecticut: In South Windsor, school bus contractor First Student issued a layoff WARN, 48 people jobless by the end of June. Southbury Training School laid off 17 people, and it was revealed they laid off 25 people last month. It’s all part of the state’s draconian funding cuts. The Constitution State is short at least $1-billion USD!
Florida: Alachua County Public Schools eliminating 1-hundred non-teacher jobs! Administrators say it’s the only way they can afford to hire more behavioral teachers, as there seems to be skyrocketing instances of behavior problems with students! God powerless to stop ‘his’ Saint Leo University system from eliminating 30 jobs due to “restructuring”. Interestingly local news reports say administrators claim they’re actually creating new jobs. In Saint Petersburg, after 31 years Brighton Prep School shutting down due to the not-so-recovered economy preventing parents from paying the school fees. After surviving The Great Depression and numerous recessions, Florida Book Store in Gainsville shutting down on Wednesday. It’s being consolidated with the University of Florida’s on-campus bookstore.
Illinois: God powerless to stop ‘his’ University of Saint Francis from revealing they laid off 21 employees. Local news media pointed out that the ‘christian’ university is spending big bucks constructing new buildings. The Gary School Board suddenly laid off 13 people, including their InfoTech director. God powerless to stop ‘his’ University of Saint Francis from revealing they laid off 21 employees last week. Local news media pointed out that the ‘christian’ university is spending big bucks constructing new buildings. God powerless to stop ‘his’ Seton Academy (Elizabeth Seton High School) from shutting down. In 2003 the all-girls schools went co-ed in an attempt to keep itself alive. Local news media said back in 2014 the Archdiocese of Chicago gave the school two years to increase student enrollment and decrease operational costs, it didn’t happen.
Indiana: Muncie Community Schools laying off 37 teachers due to what I call Disappearing Students Syndrome, which is contributing to the school district being $16-million USD in the hole.
Iowa: After 95 years (surviving The Great Depression and numerous recessions) AIB College of Business shutting down. Because of the bad economy its merging with the University of Iowa. The president of the private college swears their merger with a taxpayer funded university isn’t about the bad economy, yeah right! After 144 years (surviving The Great Depression and numerous recessions) the Walnut Community School shutting down due to massive population exodus. Local news media revealed that the population of the town of Walnut is actually 121 less than what’s publicly posted, the school itself was down to just 72 students in 2015, more than a 50% drop since 2010!
Kansas: In Wichita, at least three adult learning centers were shutdown as well as the Metro-Meridian alternative high school (school for nonconformists) due to lack of taxpayer funding.
Kentucky: Kentucky Community and Technical College eliminated 506 jobs, blaming it on what I call Disappearing Students Syndrome and $26-million USD in taxpayer funding cuts! Gateway Community and Technical College laid off ten people and halted four programs, due to massive state taxpayer funding cuts. Eastern Kentucky University announced they’re shutting down their Somerset campus at the end of June. It’s blamed on a 4.5% reduction in taxpayer funding and $8-million USD in additional ObamaCare retirement and healthcare costs.
Maryland: University of Baltimore laid off 14 people and eliminated 12 vacant jobs, blaming it on at least three years of declining student enrollments. Baltimore City Schools warning of mass layoffs due to lack of taxpayer funding.
Massachusetts: After 59 years god powerless to stop the shutdown of ‘his’ Presentation of Mary Early Childhood Program, due to the economy: “When we looked at all the resources available we realized we just didn’t have the resources to continue. We wanted to continue serving as long as we could, but realistically we can’t….”-Sister Janice Perrault
Minnesota: Globe University-Minnesota School of Business shutting down four campuses due to the state attorney general charging them with frauding students, at least 45 jobs lost. In Moorhead, The Red River Valley Academy shutting down so the owner can deal with “changes in our family”.
Mississippi: A federal court ordered the Cleveland School District to merge its still segregated junior highs and high schools. This proves to you liberal law loving weenie heads that just because its one of your beloved laws on paper doesn’t mean its being complied with. The consolidation of segregated schools will result in layoffs.
Nebraska: Hastings Public Schools shutting down 85 years old (surviving The Great [deflationary] Depression and numerous recessions) Morton Elementary. The shutdown decision was made six years ago.
New Jersey: Paterson School District eliminated 80 office jobs, and considering shutting down four schools. Sussex County Community College eliminated 47 jobs. In Long Island NYC, after three years the Doshi STEM Institute shutting down due to lack of enrollments and a lack of $1-million USD in taxpayer funding!
North Carolina: Haywood County Board of Education eliminating 14 jobs and shutting down Central Elementary. They need to cut $2-million USD from their budget.
North Dakota: The Bismarck School Board shutting down 64 years old Saxvik Elementary school due to renovations that would cost $2.5-million USD. It’s been revealed that after the University of North Dakota laid off 20 people (under the guise of cutting $21.5-million USD in costs) 34 people were secretly hired! Some department heads claimed those who were hired were hired before the layoffs began, while others said they were told to go ahead and fill ‘priority’ positions. Anybody who can do basic math can figure out that hiring more people than you layoff negates any attempt to save money!
Ohio: Cincinnati Museum Center laying off 60 people in anticipation of the renovation of Union Terminal (it’s location), which will result in the museum losing $6-million USD in yearly ticket sales for the next two years! In Hubbard, god powerless to stop the shutdown of ‘his’ Saint Patrick School. The Bishop of Youngstown blames it on ten years of declining enrollment.
Oklahoma: Tulsa Community College eliminating 30 jobs due to an expected reduction of $4-million USD in taxpayer funding.
Oregon: The Portland Public Schools is violating the U.S. 1st Amendment by banning all books that do not blame ‘climate change’ on humans! Mind twisting school teachers have even convinced impressionable young & dumb students to take part in the crime: “It is unacceptable that we have textbooks in our schools that spread doubt about the human causes and urgency of the crisis.”-Gaby Lemieux, brainwashed Lincoln High School student testifying why they should be allowed to violate the 1st Amendment (ice core samples prove you educated idiots are wrong!)
Pennsylvania: Camden School District eliminating 154 jobs due to a $39-million USD budget shortfall! In Catasauqua, Medical Academy Charter School shutting down in July. Rhode Island: Warwick School Committee eliminating a net of 42 teaching jobs as part of consolidation efforts to save $4.2-million USD. Westerly School Committee laid off 18 people due to not getting the anticipated increase in taxpayer funding, and due to jacked up ObamaCare costs: “Healthcare is going up $300-thousand, we have to pay that, we have no choice, but we only got about $130-thousand in our allocation from the town, so that is not even covering the healthcare cost, much less anything else!”-David Patten
South Dakota: The only licensed ‘extended hours’ daycare in Pierre shutting down. The owners of Little Explorers blame it on high employee turnover.
Vermont: Burlington College shutting down by the end of the month! Administrators blame it on their 2010 decision to buy property once owned by the ‘christian’ god, saying the college “struggled under the crushing weight of the debt incurred by the purchase of the Archdiocese property on North Avenue.” Burlington School District eliminating 24 jobs, in line with the budget approved by cash strapped voters.
Washington DC: Reports that Corcoran School of Art and Design at George Washington University laid off ten professors, while at the same time hiring-on a new “visiting” professor. It’s connected to plans to merge with Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
